    Role of vitamin C on hormonal and pathological changes in Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) due to exposure to sodium fluoride

    Fluoride is an essential trace element for humans and animals. Here, we explored the effects of sodium fluoride (NaF) on morphological, hormonal and histological changes in ovary of Asian stinging catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch) after exposure to 1/10th mg and 1/5th mg F/L of LC50 of fluoride in water for 45 and 90 days. Activities of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T) and estradiol (E) were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Histological evaluation of the ovaries was conducted after staining with haematoxylin-eosin (HE). Reproductive hormones were significantly decreased after NaF-treated groups. Ovary was found to be adversely effected by exposure to NaF. Maturation of follicles was inhibited by exposure after observation of GSI and histology in ovary. These results suggest that female reproductive system is adversely affected by NaF. NaF may thus significantly reduce the fertility of female fish. This study encompasses alteration in hormonal assay to evaluate the role of vitamins C in the recovery of fluoride toxicity in fish. Vitamin C is a water-soluble ROS scavenger with high potency

    Nickel toxicity on seed germination and growth in radish (Raphanus sativus) and its recovery using copper and boron

    Abstract: Effect of various concentrations of nickel (100, 200, 500 and1000 µM) and recovery treatments of boron (50 and100 µM) and copper (15 and 75 µM) each with 200 µM and 500 µM of nickel on germination, growth, biomass, chlorophyll, carotenoids, pheophytin, amylase, protein, sugar as well as activity of catalase and peroxidase were studied in radish (Raphanus sativus cv. Early menu) seedlings. Nickel treatments caused a considerable reduction in germination percentage, growth and biomass. The different pigments were also decreased with nickel treatments. However, boron addition with nickel recovered the negative effect on pigment contents. Among biochemical estimations, amylase activity and total proteins were found to be reduced in nickel treatments. Peroxidase and catalase activity were induced other than higher total sugar with nickel treatments. The combination of nickel with boron resulted into increased protein contents. This combination also reduced the catalase and peroxidase activity. The influence of nickel with copper failed to produce significant recovery except 200 µM nickel in combination with 15 µM copper with regard to catalase and peroxidase activity. The effect of nickel on hydrolyzing enzyme amylase was observed to be inhibitory, resulting into poor germination followed by poor seedlings growth. The stress protecting enzymes peroxidase and catalase seem to be induced under the influence of nickel, and providing protection to the seedlings.The application of boron with nickel showed improved germination and growth.The level of catalase and peroxidase were found to be significantly reduced showing normal growth and biomass of seedlings

    Acute Fatty Liver of Pregnancy (AFLP) is a rare and life-threatening obstetric emergency. Although the exact pathogenesis is unknown, the cases of AFLP are believed to be associated with abnormal fatty acid oxidation. The diagnosis of AFLP is a challenging task for the clinicians because of the nonspecific clinical presentation which may mimic conditions such as acute viral hepatitis, preeclampsia or Hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes, and Low Platelet Count (HELLP) syndrome. Early diagnosis, prompt obstetric management, intensive supportive care, and a multidisciplinary approach are the key to a good outcome. We here present two similar cases of AFLP with two different outcomes managed in a tertiary care center of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

    Evaluation of Rice Varieties against Multiple Diseases Under Middle IGP of Bihar

    An investigation was carried out to evaluate the susceptibility of rice cultivation to major field diseases like brown spot, sheath blight and bacterial leaf blight under middle Indo Gangetic Plain. The disease incidence and disease severity were observed at three different growth stages namely flowering, milk and maturity in boro seasons during 2015-16. The incidence of brown spot ranged from 8.93 to 17.83%, 16.67 to 25.67% and 18.33 to 28.33% at flowering, milk and maturity stages, respectively. The severity of brown spot in grade (0-9 scale) ranged from 5.13 to 10.33, 9.33 to 20.00 and 11.57 to 22.67, respectively at flowering, milk and maturity stages. The incidence of sheath blight of paddy ranged from 7. 03 to 16.50%, 13.13 to 22.67% and 19.67 to 35.67% at flowering, milk and maturity stages, respectively. The severity of sheath blight in grade (0-9 scale) ranged from 4.00 to 8.60, 8.33 to 13.93 and 18.33 to 34.33, respectively at flowering, milk and maturity stages. The incidence of bacterial leaf blight ranged from 5.00 to 14.00%, 11.43 to 21.00% and 17.00 to 34.00% at flowering, milk and maturity stages, respectively. The severity of bacterial leaf blight in grade (0-9 scale) ranged from 2.00 to 8.00%, 6.33 to 12.05% and 14.47 to 20.17%, respectively at flowering, milk and maturity stages. Among the varieties, the highest incidence and severity of Brown spot was recorded on Rajendra Bhagawati whereas it was lowest on 27P31 at all growth stages. In the case of Sheath blight, highest incidence and severity was recorded on Sambha Mahsuri whereas it was the lowest on CRL 193. Beside this in the case of Bacterial leaf blight, the highest incidence and severity was recorded on Kranti whereas the lowest was recorded on CRL 193. In general, it was observed that the incidence and severity of diseases increased gradually from flowering to maturity stage and the genotypes with the minimum incidence and severity of diseases gave the maximum yield
