To Think or Not to Think with Theory in Qualitative Research

Thinking with Theory in Qualitative Research: Viewing Data across Multiple Perspectives is a book that challenges the traditional way of analyzing qualitative data. The book invites researchers who use qualitative methods to think with theory when it comes to analyzing their data since analyzing the data with no theory in mind can make injustice to the data. Thinking with theory, however, can enrich one’s study and direct the process of the data analysis. The authors offer us six theories, as examples, to think with when analyzing qualitative data. These theories are: Derrida’s Deconstruction, Spivak’s Marginality, Foucault’s Power/Knowledge, Butler’s Performativity, Deleuze’s Desire, and Barad’s Intra-action. To clarify their approach, the authors interviewed two first-generation-scholar participants: Cassandra and Sera and analyzed their data in the chapters of the book; each chapter analyzes the data from the perspective of one of the six aforementioned theories, and each chapter is proceeded by an interlude in which the authors explicate why they have chosen this particular theory

An alumni benchmark analysis of the master of agriculture program in professional agriculture at Iowa State University (1979-2004)

The study assessed students\u27 perceptions about the Master of Agriculture in professional agriculture (ProAg) program that is offered off-campus. It also provides information regarding the number of graduate students who enrolled in this program and are now working in agriculture related occupations. Alumni of the program provided feedback regarding the content of the ProAg program in agriculture. It serves as an analysis tool for assessing the effectiveness of the ProAg program in the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University. The College of Agriculture could use the data and information collected from this study for future program planning as well as to guide decisions regarding the curriculum. It could also serve as a guideline when designing and delivering future distance education Master\u27s Degree programs at Iowa State University.;The purpose of this study was to assess the current ProAg Master\u27s Degree program by providing information about Iowa State University alumni\u27s description of current practices used which could serve in improving the quality of the program. The objectives of the study were: (1) Provide an accurate illustration of the current distance education Master\u27s Degree programs offered from the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University; (2) Enable administrators, and staff members at Iowa State University to readjust and reassess the program to fit and meet new demands in the marketplace; (3) Provide valuable information about services and support given to students; and (4) Help Iowa State University in offering future distance education Master\u27s Degree programs from the College of Agriculture. Results of the study revealed that many graduates who are working currently in agricultural related jobs did benefit enormously from the ProAg program in gaining new knowledge, and analytical and problem solving skills. Graduates were satisfied and praised the flexibility of the program which also assisted many of them in earning a post graduate degree while maintaining and advancing in their jobs. Some participants indicated that the program was not well advertised and they did not have access to financial aid services. Participants were satisfied with interaction and teaching methods with their instructors. In conclusion the ProAg is a successful program

The Creation of the Hyper-Masculine World: The White Man’s Modern State and the Sedimentation of Binaries

This research identifies a specific constellation of historical and phenomenological factors that have contributed to the rise of the hypermasculine modern state and, by extension, the monolithic image of the oppressed Muslim woman. The goal of this project is to establish a causative link between the gender binaries used in the conception of the modern state—marking modern states and politics as exclusively masculine arenas—during the colonization era and the current stagnant image of the Muslim woman in the habituated visual field of Westerners. This is done through an exploration of the gendered undertones of the modern state, a recapitulation of colonial literature that highlights how the binaries were transported to Arab colonies, and an assessment of its effects on the over-determined image of Muslim women in our current context by employing case studies of French Algeria and France today to solidify and cement the argument. Instead of tracing the tangible genealogy of that construction or offering a trajectory that is historically grounded, as many post-colonial critiques have proposed, this research adopts a phenomenological lens with which we can see anew the repercussions of colonial epistemology on the Muslim woman today

Reiterating anti-Muslim rhetoric : interview practices of Fox News’ Hannity

    Get PDF
Analyzing interviews with Muslim guests on Fox News’ Hannity reveals biased practices that trigger anti-Muslim sentiment and rhetoric. Muslim guests are asked leading questions, cornered (asked off topic questions and forced to respond), accused with hedge-less statements, faced with the technique of “polls say,” and labelled as “you” versus “us.” The result of such anti-Muslim sentiment is audience who have not been given the chance to listen, but a chance to hate. This paper, thus, calls for transformation in action so that we pushback against this sentiment and rhetoric

Valvulogenesis of a living, innervated pulmonary root induced by an acellular scaffold

Heart valve disease is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide with no effective medical therapy and no ideal valve substitute emulating the extremely sophisticated functions of a living heart valve. These functions influence survival and quality of life. This has stimulated extensive attempts at tissue engineering “living” heart valves. These attempts utilised combinations of allogeneic/ autologous cells and biological scaffolds with practical, regulatory, and ethical issues. In situ regeneration depends on scaffolds that attract, house and instruct cells and promote connective tissue formation. We describe a surgical, tissue-engineered, anatomically precise, novel off-the-shelf, acellular, synthetic scaffold inducing a rapid process of morphogenesis involving relevant cell types, extracellular matrix, regulatory elements including nerves and humoral components. This process relies on specific material characteristics, design and “morphodynamism”.</p

The nitric oxide (NO) pathway has been implicated in the pathophysiology and progression of the disease. Its extremely short half-life and systemic effects have hampered the clinical use of NO in PAH. In an attempt to circumvent these major limitations, we have developed a new NO-nanomedicine formulation. The formulation was based on hydrogel-like polymeric composite NO-releasing nanoparticles (NO-RP). The kinetics of NO release from the NO-RP showed a peak at about 120 min followed by a sustained release for over 8 h. The NO-RP did not affect the viability or inflammation responses of endothelial cells. The NO-RP produced concentration-dependent relaxations of pulmonary arteries in mice with PAH induced by hypoxia. In conclusion, NO-RP drugs could considerably enhance the therapeutic potential of NO therapy for PAH.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
