Electron Population Aging Models for Wide-Angle Tails
Color-color diagrams have been useful in studying the spectral shapes in
radio galaxies. At the workshop we presented color-color diagrams for two
wide-angle tails, 1231+674 and 1433+553, and found that the standard aging
models do not adequately represent the observed data. Although the JP and KP
models can explain some of the observed points in the color-color diagram, they
do not account for those found near the power-law line. This difficulty may be
attributable to several causes. Spectral tomography has been previously used to
discern two separate electron populations in these sources. The combination
spectra from two such overlying components can easily resemble a range of
power-laws. In addition, any non-uniformity in the magnetic field strength can
also create a power-law-like spectrum. We will also discuss the effects that

Dual dopamine D2 receptor and β2-adrenoceptor agonists for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: the pre-clinical rationale
AbstractThis paper describes the rationale for the development of dual dopamine D2-receptor and β2-adrenoceptor agonists as potential treatments for the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The putative involvement of pulmonary sensory afferent nerves in mediating the key COPD symptoms of breathlessness, cough and excess sputum production is outlined and the hypothesis that activation of D2-receptors on such nerves would modulate their activity is developed. This premise was tested, in a range of animal models, using the first of a novel class of dual dopamine D2-receptor and β2-adrenoceptor agonists, sibenadet HCI (Viozanâ˘, AR-C68397AA). In the course of these studies it was demonstrated that sibenadet, through activation of D2-receptors, inhibited discharge of rapidly adapting receptors and was effective in reducing reflex-induced tachypnoea, mucus production and cough in the dog. Sibenadet, through its activation of β2-adrenoceptors, was also shown to be an effective bronchodilator with a prolonged duration of action following topical administration to the lungs. These studies also indicated that sibenadet had a wide therapeutic ratio with respect to expected undesirable side-effects such as emesis and cardiovascular disturbances. These results provided a compelling rationale for the initiation of a clinical development programme with sibenadet for the treatment of COPD
Asymmetric interference between sex and emotion in face perception
Previous research with speeded-response interference tasks modeled on the Garner paradigm has demonstrated that task-irrelevant variations in either emotional expression or facial speech do not interfere with identity judgments, but irrelevant variations in identity do interfere with expression and facial speech judgments. Sex, like identity, is a relatively invariant aspect of faces. Drawing on a recent model of face processing according to which invariant and changeable aspects of faces are represented in separate neurological systems, we predicted asymmetric interference between sex and emotion classification. The results of Experiment 1, in which the Garner paradigm was employed, confirmed this prediction: Emotion classifications were influenced by the sex of the faces, but sex classifications remained relatively unaffected by facial expression. A second experiment, in which the difficulty of the tasks was equated, corroborated these findings, indicating that differences in processing speed cannot account for the asymmetric relationship between facial emotion and sex processing. A third experiment revealed the same pattern of asymmetric interference through the use of a variant of the Simon paradigm. To the extent that Garner interference and Simon interference indicate interactions at perceptual and response-selection stages of processing, respectively, a challenge for face processing models is to show how the same asymmetric pattern of interference could occur at these different stages. The implications of these findings for the functional independence of the different components of face processing are discussed

MGMRES: A generalization of GMRES for solving large sparse nonsymmetric linear systems
This paper is concerned with the solution of the linear system Au = b, where A is a real square nonsingular matrix which is large, sparse and nonsymmetric. We consider the use of Krylov subspace methods. We first choose an initial approximation u{sup (0)} to the solution {bar u} = A{sup -1}b. The GMRES (Generalized Minimum Residual Algorithm for Solving Non Symmetric Linear Systems) method was developed by Saad and Schultz (1986) and used extensively for many years, for sparse systems. This paper considers a generalization of GMRES; it is similar to GMRES except that we let Z = A{sup T}Y, where Y is a nonsingular matrix which is symmetric but not necessarily SPD
Fermi Surface Measurements on the Low Carrier Density Ferromagnet Ca1-xLaxB6 and SrB6
Recently it has been discovered that weak ferromagnetism of a dilute 3D
electron gas develops on the energy scale of the Fermi temperature in some of
the hexaborides; that is, the Curie temperature approximately equals the Fermi
temperature. We report the results of de Haas-van Alphen experiments on two
concentrations of La-doped CaB6 as well as Ca-deficient Ca1-dB6 and
Sr-deficient Sr1-dB6. The results show that a Fermi surface exists in each case
and that there are significant electron-electron interactions in the low

The Debye-Waller Factor in solid 3He and 4He
The Debye-Waller factor and the mean-squared displacement from lattice sites
for solid 3He and 4He were calculated with Path Integral Monte Carlo at
temperatures between 5 K and 35 K, and densities between 38 nm^(-3) and 67
nm^(-3). It was found that the mean-squared displacement exhibits finite-size
scaling consistent with a crossover between the quantum and classical limits of
N^(-2/3) and N^(-1/3), respectively. The temperature dependence appears to be
T^3, different than expected from harmonic theory. An anisotropic k^4 term was
also observed in the Debye-Waller factor, indicating the presence of
non-Gaussian corrections to the density distribution around lattice sites. Our
results, extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit, agree well with recent values
from scattering experiments.Comment: 5 figure
Characterization of Rotating Cavitation in a Four Bladed Inducer
This work aims to characterize the dynamic behavior of a four bladed inducer and clarify the physical mechanism that leads to the onset of rotating cavitation. The inducer under consideration is representative of a low-pressure liquid oxygen pump (LPOP) inducer of modern design and incorporates several standard design features used in rocket turbopumps to suppress rotating cavitation. The mechanism is characterized based on a combination of two-phase numerical simulations and inducer experiments. Experimental measurements demonstrate a supersynchronous rotating cavity in the periphery of the inducer inlet at frequencies between 1.2 and 1.6 times rotor frequency and a synchronous 2nd spatial harmonic pattern associated with alternate blade cavitation. The analysis indicates a causal link between alternate blade cavitation and rotating cavitation, with a distinct cut-on cut-off behavior. Numerical calculations and high-speed videos elucidate the mechanism of breakdown of alternate blade cavitation and the formation of rotating cavitation. The present work suggests that rotating cavitation is caused by the coupling of the cavities on adjacent blades during alternate blade cavitation. Due to the nearly tangential flow, the vortex lines from one of the non-cavitating blades wrap around the blade leading edge of the adjacent blade, which yields a drop in static pressure and cavity formation. The tip vortex cavity interaction with the leading edge of the blade leads to sheet cavity breakdown with periodic growth and collapse of cavities, creating the apparent super-synchronous rotation of the cavitating region.United States. A recent paper by Heinemeyer et al. (2018) in this journal has suggested that the use of prescribed fire may enhance carbon accumulation in UK upland blanket bogs. We challenge this finding based on a number of concerns with the original manuscript including the lack of an unburned control, insufficient replication, unrecognised potential confounding factors, and potentially large inaccuracies in the core dating approach used to calculate carbon accumulation rates. Remote Sensing D/H Ratios in Methane Ice: Temperature-Dependent Absorption Coefficients of CH3D in Methane Ice and in Nitrogen Ice
The existence of strong absorption bands of singly deuterated methane (CH3D)
at wavelengths where normal methane (CH4) absorbs comparatively weakly could
enable remote measurement of D/H ratios in methane ice on outer solar system
bodies. We performed laboratory transmission spectroscopy experiments,
recording spectra at wavelengths from 1 to 6 \mum to study CH3D bands at 2.47,
2.87, and 4.56 \mum, wavelengths where ordinary methane absorption is weak. We
report temperature-dependent absorption coefficients of these bands when the
CH3D is diluted in CH4 ice and also when it is dissolved in N2 ice, and
describe how these absorption coefficients can be combined with data from the
literature to simulate arbitrary D/H ratio absorption coefficients for CH4 ice
and for CH4 in N2 ice. We anticipate these results motivating new telescopic
observations to measure D/H ratios in CH4 ice on Triton, Pluto, Eris, and
