Growth of GaSb and GaInAsSb layers for thermophotovoltaic cells by liquid phase epitaxy
GaSb based cells as receivers in thermophotovoltaic system have attracted great interest and been extensively studied in the recent 15 years. Although nowadays the manufacturing technologies have made a great progress, there are still some details need to make a further study. In this paper, undoped and doped GaSb layers were grown on n-GaSb (100) substrates from both Ga-rich and Sb-rich solutions using liquid phase epitaxy (LPE) technique. The nominal segregation coefficients k of intentional doped Zn were 1.4 and 8.8 determined from the two kinds of GaSb epitaxial layers. Additionally, compared with growing from Ga-rich solutions, the growing processes from Sb-rich solutions were much easier to control and the surface morphologies of epitaxial layers were smoother. Furthermore, in order to broaden the absorbing edge, Ga 1-xInxAsySb1-y quaternary alloys were grown on both GaSb and InAs substrates from In-rich solutions, under different temperature respectively

Specificities of a chemically modified laccase from trametes hirsuta on soluble and cellulose-bound substrates
Laccases could prevent fabrics and
garments from re-deposition of dyes during
washing and finishing processes by degrading the solubilized dye. However, laccase action must be restricted to solubilized dye molecules thereby
avoiding decolorization of fabrics. Chemical
modification of enzymes can provide a powerful tool to change the adsorption behaviour of enzymes on water insoluble polymers. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was covalently attached onto a laccase from Trametes hirsuta. Different molecular
weights of the synthetic polymer were tested
in terms of adsorption behaviour and retained
laccase activity. Covalent attachment of PEG
onto the laccase resulted in enhanced enzyme
stability while with increasing molecular weight of attached PEG the substrate affinity for the laccase conjugate decreased. The activity of the modified laccases on fibre bound dye was drastically reduced decreasing the adsorption of the enzyme on various fabrics. Compared to the 5 kDa PEG laccase conjugate (K/S value 47.60
Baicalin administration attenuates hyperglycemia-induced malformation of cardiovascular system
In this study, the effects of Baicalin on the hyperglycemia-induced cardiovascular malformation during embryo development were investigated. Using early chick embryos, an optimal concentration of Baicalin (6 μM), was identified which could prevent hyperglycemia-induced cardiovascular malformation of embryos. Hyperglycemia-enhanced cell apoptosis was reduced in embryos and HUVECs in the presence of Baicalin. Hyperglycemia-induced excessive ROS production was inhibited when Baicalin was administered. Analyses of SOD, GSH-Px, MAQE and GABAA suggested Baicalin plays an antioxidant role in chick embryos possibly through suppression of outwardly rectifying Cl(-) in the high-glucose microenvironment. In addition, hyperglycemia-enhanced autophagy fell in the presence of Baicalin, through affecting the ubiquitin of p62 and accelerating autophagy flux. Both Baicalin and Vitamin C could decrease apoptosis, but CQ did not, suggesting autophagy to be a protective function on the cell survival. In mice, Baicalin reduced the elevated blood glucose level caused by streptozotocin (STZ). Taken together, these data suggest that hyperglycemia-induced embryonic cardiovascular malformation can be attenuated by Baicalin administration through suppressing the excessive production of ROS and autophagy. Baicalin could be a potential candidate drug for women suffering from gestational diabetes mellitus

Conversion to aflibercept for diabetic macular edema unresponsive to ranibizumab or bevacizumab
Background: The purpose of this study was to determine if eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME) unresponsive to ranibizumab or bevacizumab would benefit from conversion to aflibercept. Methods: This study was conducted as a retrospective chart review of subjects with DME unresponsive to ranibizumab and/or bevacizumab and subsequently converted to aflibercept. Results: In total, 21 eyes from 19 subjects of mean age 62±15 years were included. The majority of subjects were male (63%). The median number of ranibizumab or bevacizumab injections before switching to aflibercept was six, and the median number of aflibercept injections after switching was three. Median follow-up was 5 months after the switch. Mean central foveal thickness (CFT) was 453.52±143.39 mm immediately prior to the switch. Morphologically, intraretinal cysts were present in all cases. Mean CFT after the first injection decreased significantly to 362.57±92.82 mm (Wilcoxon signed-rank test; P<0.001). At the end of follow-up, the mean CFT was 324.17±98.76 mm (P<0.001). Mean visual acuity was 0.42±0.23 logMAR just prior to the switch, 0.39±0.31 logMAR after one aflibercept injection, and 0.37±0.22 log-MAR at the end of follow-up. The final visual acuity was significantly better than visual acuity before the switch (P=0.04). Conclusion: Eyes with DME unresponsive to multiple ranibizumab/bevacizumab injections demonstrate anatomical and visual improvement on conversion to aflibercept
Accreting Millisecond X-Ray Pulsars
Accreting Millisecond X-Ray Pulsars (AMXPs) are astrophysical laboratories
without parallel in the study of extreme physics. In this chapter we review the
past fifteen years of discoveries in the field. We summarize the observations
of the fifteen known AMXPs, with a particular emphasis on the multi-wavelength
observations that have been carried out since the discovery of the first AMXP
in 1998. We review accretion torque theory, the pulse formation process, and
how AMXP observations have changed our view on the interaction of plasma and
magnetic fields in strong gravity. We also explain how the AMXPs have deepened
our understanding of the thermonuclear burst process, in particular the
phenomenon of burst oscillations. We conclude with a discussion of the open
problems that remain to be addressed in the future.Comment: Review to appear in "Timing neutron stars: pulsations, oscillations
and explosions", T. Belloni, M. Mendez, C.M. Zhang Eds., ASSL, Springer;

Sesquiterpenes and lignans from the flower buds of Daphne genkwa and their nitric oxide inhibitory activities.
Chemical investigation of the Daphne genkwa has led to the isolation of four sesquiterpenes (1a/1b, 2 and 3), including one pair of sesquiterpene enantiomers (1a/1b), 1a is a new compound (+)-4-hydroxy-10-epirotundone, and twelve lignans (4-15). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations of 1a/1b were determined by CD analysis. All compounds were examined for their inhibitory effects on the nitric oxide (NO) production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in BV-2 microglial cells, and compounds 7-10 exhibited pronounced inhibition on NO production with IC50 values in the range of 5.8-10.2 μM, being more active than the positive control, quercetin (IC50 = 17.0 μM)
