Two dimensional scaling of resistance in flux flow region in Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8 thin films

The resistance of Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8Tl_2Ba_2CaCu_2O_8 thin films has been measured when the angle between the applied fields and abab-plane of the film is changed continuously at various temperatures. Under various magnetic fields, the resistance can be well scaled in terms of the c-axis component of the applied fields at the same temperature in the whole angle range. Meanwhile, we show that the measurement of resistance in this way is a complementary method to determine the growth orientation of the anisotropic high-TcT_c superconductors.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Edge states and topological orders in the spin liquid phases of star lattice

A group of novel materials can be mapped to the star lattice, which exhibits some novel physical properties. We give the bulk-edge correspondence theory of the star lattice and study the edge states and their topological orders in different spin liquid phases. The bulk and edge-state energy structures and Chern number depend on the spin liquid phases and hopping parameters because the local spontaneous magnetic flux in the spin liquid phase breaks the time reversal and space inversion symmetries. We give the characteristics of bulk and edge energy structures and their corresponding Chern numbers in the uniform, nematic and chiral spin liquids. In particular, we obtain analytically the phase diagram of the topological orders for the chiral spin liquid states SL[\phi,\phi,-2\phi], where \phi is the magnetic flux in two triangles and a dodecagon in the unit cell. Moreover, we find the topological invariance for the spin liquid phases, SL[\phi_{1},\phi_{2},-(\phi_{1}+\phi_{2})] and SL[\phi_{2},\phi_{1},-(\phi_{1}+\phi_{2})]. The results reveal the relationship between the energy-band and edge-state structures and their topological orders of the star lattice.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

Getting the strain under control: Trans-Varestraint tests for hot cracking susceptibility

    Get PDF
A new method for conducting Trans-Varestraint tests for assessing hot cracking susceptibility is proposed. Experiments were carried out, to validate the new method, with an industrial scale rig using tungsten inert gas welding. The hot cracking susceptibility of API-5L X65 and EN3B steel was compared. The results indicated that, by using the new method, the strain applied to the welding bead and consequently to the solidification front was controlled in a repeatable and reliable way. The results also indicated that EN3B has a maximum crack length (a parameter in the test) higher than X65 and it is reached at lower augmented strain thus demonstrating it is more susceptible to hot cracking, while also indicating that there is a capability of predicting the initiation position of hot cracks during welding. By using the method proposed, the capability of setting standardized test procedures for Trans-Varestraint tests is improved. It is recommended that future tests for assessing hot cracking susceptibility should employ the proposed method in order for the results to be comparable and to also study the effect of strain rate in hot cracking of materials

Degradation of two textile dyes, C.I.Acid Orange 7 (Orange II) and C.I. Reactive Red 2 (Procion Red MX-5B) bound to silica gel and cellulose by hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by Fe (III) complexed to Tetra-Amido Macrocyclic Ligands (Fe-TAML activators) at pH 10 was investigated. The performance of the oxidising system was characterized by conducting batch and column experiments. C.I.Acid Orange 7 and C.I. Reactive Red 2 on solid matrix after the addition of the Fe-TAML/H2O2 decolourize in initial time period of 10-20 minutes. The decolourisation rate of dyes on silica gel or on cellulose respectively was much slower than that in aqueous solution. On the silica gel. the degradation mechanism is the same as observed in aqueous solutions, first step is likely the formation of reactive species and the second step is the interaction of the reactive part with the desorbed dyes structure to release various species. The finding about decolourisation of the dyed cellulose leads to the conclusion that that Fe-TAML molecules must enter into the microfibril of cellulose and approach closely to the dye. Thus, the catalyst is not able to completely degrade the dye while bound to a fabric of structure such as cellulose

Histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate solution decreases mortality and morbidity in high-risk patients with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with complex congenital heart disease: an 11-year experience from a single institution

Cardioplegic reperfusion during a long term ischemic period interrupts cardiac surgery and also increases cellular edema due to repeated solution administration. We reviewed the clinical experiences on myocardial protection of a single perfusion with histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) for high-risk patients with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with complex congenital heart disease. This retrospective study included 101 high-risk patients undergoing arterial switch operation between March 2001 and July 2012. We divided the cohort into two groups: HTK group, myocardial protection was carried out with one single perfusion with HTK solution; and St group, myocardial protection with conventional St. Thomas' crystalloid cardioplegic solution. The duration of cardiopulmonary bypass did not differ between the two groups. The mortality, morbidity, ICU stay, post-operative hospitalization time, and number of transfusions in HTK group were lower than those in St group (P<0.05). Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that HTK is a statistically significant independent predictor of decreased early mortality and morbidity (P<0.05). In conclusion, HTK solution seems to be an effective and safe alternative to St. Thomas' solution for cardioplegic reperfusion in high-risk patients with complex congenital heart disease
