A simplified model of the source channel of the Leksell Gamma Knife: testing multisource configurations with PENELOPE
A simplification of the source channel geometry of the Leksell Gamma
Knife, recently proposed by the authors and checked for a single
source configuration (Al-Dweri et al 2004), has been used to calculate the dose
distributions along the , and axes in a water phantom with a
diameter of 160~mm, for different configurations of the Gamma Knife including
201, 150 and 102 unplugged sources. The code PENELOPE (v. 2001) has been used
to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, the output factors for the
14, 8 and 4~mm helmets have been calculated. The results found for the dose
profiles show a qualitatively good agreement with previous ones obtained with
EGS4 and PENELOPE (v. 2000) codes and with the predictions of
GammaPlan. The output factors obtained with our model agree
within the statistical uncertainties with those calculated with the same Monte
Carlo codes and with those measured with different techniques. Owing to the
accuracy of the results obtained and to the reduction in the computational time
with respect to full geometry simulations (larger than a factor 15), this
simplified model opens the possibility to use Monte Carlo tools for planning
purposes in the Gamma Knife.Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 5 table
Dual-band MIMO antenna using double-T structure for WLAN applications
Session - Interactive 2.3: Multi-Band AntennasThe Conference program's website is located at http://www.iwat2014.org/index.php/program/detailed-programA dual-band multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is proposed for the wireless-local-area-network (WLAN) applications in the 2.4-GHz and 5.2-GHz bands. The antenna consists of two double-T monopole elements with microstrip-fed and symmetrically placed on a substrate. To enhance isolation between the two monopole elements, three slots are cut on the ground plane on the other side of the substrate. The longer slot is used for better isolation in the 2.4-GHz band, while the two shorter slots are used for the 5.2-GHz band. Simulation and measurement are used to study the antenna performance in terms of S parameters, radiation patterns, realized gain, efficiency, and envelope correlation coefficient. Results show that the MIMO antenna has the two operation bands of 2.20-2.75 GHz and 5.09-5.50 GHz with mutual coupling of less than -15 dB and envelope correlation coefficient of less than 0.1, making it a good candidate for WLAN applications.published_or_final_versio
Are Asians comfortable with discussing death in health valuation studies? A study in multi-ethnic Singapore
BACKGROUND
To characterize ease in discussing death (EID) and its influence on health valuation in a multi-ethnic Asian population and to determine the acceptability of various descriptors of death and "pits"/"all-worst" in health valuation.
METHODS
In-depth interviews (English or mother-tongue) among adult Chinese, Malay and Indian Singaporeans selected to represent both genders and a wide range of ages/educational levels. Subjects rated using 0–10 visual analogue scales (VAS): (1) EID, (2) acceptability of 8 descriptors for death, and (3) appropriateness of "pits" and "all-worst" as descriptors for the worst possible health state. Subjects also valued 3 health states using VAS followed by time trade-off (TTO). The influence of sociocultural variables on EID and these descriptors was studied using univariable analyses and multiple linear regression (MLR). The influence of EID on VAS/TTO utilities with adjustment for sociocultural variables was assessed using MLR.
RESULTS
Subjects (n = 63, 35% Chinese, 32% Malay, median age 44 years) were generally comfortable with discussing death (median EID: 8.0). Only education significantly influenced EID (p = 0.045). EID correlated weakly with VAS/TTO scores (range: VAS: -0.23 to 0.07; TTO: -0.14 to 0.11). All subjects felt "passed away", "departed" and "deceased" were most acceptable (median acceptability: 8.0) while "sudden death" and "immediate death" were least acceptable (median acceptability: 5.0). Subjects clearly preferred "all-worst" to "pits" (63% vs. 19%, p < 0.001).
CONCLUSION
Singaporeans were generally comfortable with discussing death and had clear preferences for several descriptors of death and for "all-worst". EID is unlikely to influence health preference measurement in health valuation studies
Fermi Large Area Telescope Detection of Two Very-High-Energy (E>100 GeV) Gamma-ray Photons from the z = 1.1 Blazar PKS 0426-380
We report the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detection of two
very-high-energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray photons from the directional
vicinity of the distant (redshift, z = 1.1) blazar PKS 0426-380. The null
hypothesis that both the 134 and 122 GeV photons originate from unrelated
sources can be rejected at the 5.5 sigma confidence level. We therefore claim
that at least one of the two VHE photons is securely associated with the
blazar, making PKS 0426-380 the most distant VHE emitter known to date. The
results are in agreement with the most recent Fermi-LAT constraints on the
Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) intensity, which imply a
horizon for 100 GeV photons. The LAT detection of the two VHE
gamma-rays coincided roughly with flaring states of the source, although we did
not find an exact correspondence between the VHE photon arrival times and the
flux maxima at lower gamma-ray energies. Modeling the gamma-ray continuum of
PKS 0426-380 with daily bins revealed a significant spectral hardening around
the time of detection of the first VHE event (LAT photon index \Gamma\
1.4) but on the other hand no pronounced spectral changes near the detection
time of the second one. This combination implies a rather complex variability
pattern of the source in gamma rays during the flaring epochs. An additional
flat component is possibly present above several tens of GeV in the
EBL-corrected Fermi-LAT spectrum accumulated over the ~8-month high state.Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 4 figures. Accepted by ApJ
1.0 Mm Maps and Radial Density Distributions of Southern Hii/molecular Cloud Complexes
Several 1.0 continuum mapping observations were made of seven southern hemisphere h12/molecular cloud complexes with 65 arcsec resolution. The radial density distribution of the clouds with central luminosity sources was determined observationally. Strong similarities in morphology and general physical conditions were found to exist among all of the southern clouds in the sample
Re-parameterization Invariance in Fractional Flux Periodicity
We analyze a common feature of a nontrivial fractional flux periodicity in
two-dimensional systems. We demonstrate that an addition of fractional flux can
be absorbed into re-parameterization of quantum numbers. For an exact
fractional periodicity, all the electronic states undergo the
re-parameterization, whereas for an approximate periodicity valid in a large
system, only the states near the Fermi level are involved in the

Matrix metalloproteinase MMP12 is associated with intervertebral disc degeneration
INTRODUCTION: Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is associated with low back pain. However, the molecular changes during the degeneration process is not entirely clear. The loss of nucleus pulposus (NP) integrity is one of the early events of the degeneration. Chondrogenic markers, such as SOX9 and aggrecan, have been commonly used to assess the degree of IVD degeneration. Recent transcriptomic studies have proposed several other candidates that may mark IVD degeneration. These include cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), matrix gla protein (MGP)[1], fibulin 1 (FBLN1) [2], cytokeratin 18 (KRT18) [3], cadherin-2 (CDH2) [3], cytokeratin 19 (KRT19) [2], and Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) [4].
