    Twisted Elliptic Genera of N=2 SCFTs in Two Dimensions

    The elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=2 superconformal field theories can be twisted by the action of the integral Heisenberg group if their U(1) charges are fractional. The basic properties of the resulting twisted elliptic genera and the associated twisted Witten indices are investigated with due attention to their behaviors in orbifoldization. Our findings are illustrated by and applied to several concrete examples. We give a better understanding of the duality phenomenon observed long before for certain Landau-Ginzburg models. We revisit and prove an old conjecture of Witten which states that every ADE Landau-Ginzburg model and the corresponding minimal model share the same elliptic genus.     Helicon waves generated by radio-frequency (rf) waves are experimentally demonstrated to have the characteristics of Landau damping, as predicted theoretically, and fully ionized plasmas are realized by this efficient coupling of rf powers to plasmas. Excited waves are identified as a helicon wave by measuring wavelengths in the plasma along the magnetic field and comparing with the dispersion relation. Good agreement is found between experimental and theoretical results

    Indication of antiferromagnetic interaction between paramagnetic Co ions in the diluted magnetic semiconductor Zn1x_{1-x}Cox_{x}O

    The magnetic properties of Zn1x_{1-x}Cox_xO (x=0.07x=0.07 and 0.10) thin films, which were homo-epitaxially grown on a ZnO(0001) substrates with varying relatively high oxygen pressure, have been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co 2p2p core-level absorption edge. The line shapes of the absorption spectra are the same in all the films and indicate that the Co2+^{2+} ions substitute for the Zn sites. The magnetic-field and temperature dependences of the XMCD intensity are consistent with the magnetization measurements, indicating that except for Co there are no additional sources for the magnetic moment, and demonstrate the coexistence of paramagnetic and ferromagnetic components in the homo-epitaxial Zn1x_{1-x}Cox_{x}O thin films, in contrast to the ferromagnetism in the hetero-epitaxial Zn1x_{1-x}Cox_{x}O films studied previously. The analysis of the XMCD intensities using the Curie-Weiss law reveals the presence of antiferromagnetic interaction between the paramagnetic Co ions. Missing XMCD intensities and magnetization signals indicate that most of Co ions are non-magnetic probably because they are strongly coupled antiferromagnetically with each other. Annealing in a high vacuum reduces both the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic signals. We attribute the reductions to thermal diffusion and aggregation of Co ions with antiferromagnetic nanoclusters in Zn1x_{1-x}Cox_{x}O.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures, accepted for Physical Review

    We performed a soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of a Zn1x_{1-x}Vx_xO thin film which showed small ferromagnetic moment. Field and temperature dependences of V 2pp XMCD signals indicated the coexistence of Curie-Weiss paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and possibly ferromagnetic V ions, quantitatively consistent with the magnetization measurements. We attribute the paramagnetic signal to V ions substituting Zn sites which are somewhat elongated along the c-axis

    Anaesthesia for a morbidly obese patient with schizophrenia and intellectual disability

    We report the case of a morbidly obese woman with schizophrenia and intellectual disability who underwent dental treatment using general anaesthesia. The 38-year-old patient was 156 cm tall and weighed 140 kg, with a body mass index of 57.5 kg.m-2. Her developmental age was less than five or six years. She had been taking several antipsychotic agents, including haloperidol. Tracheal intubation was performed smoothly and anaesthesia was maintained uneventfully using propofol and remifentanil.This case demonstrates that the method of general anaesthesia presented here can be used safely in managing patients with these kinds of disabilities

    Earliest detection of the optical afterglow of GRB 030329 and its variability

    We report the earliest detection of an extremely bright optical afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 030329 using a 30cm-telescope at Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo, JAPAN). Our observation started 67 minutes after the burst, and continued for succeeding two nights until the afterglow faded below the sensitivity limit of the telescope (approximately 18 mag). Combining our data with those reported in GCN Circulars, we find that the early afterglow light curve of the first half day is described by a broken power-law (t^{- alpha}) function with indices alpha_{1} = 0.88 +/- 0.01 (0.047 < t < t_{b1} days), alpha_{2} = 1.18 +/- 0.01 (t_{b1} < t < t_{b2} days), and alpha_{3} = 1.81 +/- 0.04 (t_{b2} < t < 1.2 days), where t_{b1} ~ 0.26 days and t_{b2} ~ 0.54 days, respectively. The change of the power-law index at the first break at t ~ 0.26 days is consistent with that expected from a ``cooling-break'' when the cooling frequency crossed the optical band. If the interpretation is correct, the decay index before the cooling-break implies a uniform ISM environment.Comment: 13 pages, 1 table and 2 figures. Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Letter
