Diffusion and migration in polymer electrolytes
Mixtures of neutral polymers and lithium salts have the potential to serve as electrolytes in next-generation rechargeable Li-ion batteries. The purpose of this review is to expose the delicate interplay between polymer-salt interactions at the segmental level and macroscopic ion transport at the battery level. Since complete characterization of this interplay has only been completed in one system: mixtures of poly(ethylene oxide) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PEO/LiTFSI), we focus on data obtained from this system. We begin with a discussion of the activity coefficient, followed by a discussion of six different diffusion coefficients: the Rouse motion of polymer segments is quantified by Dseg, the self-diffusion of cations and anions is quantified by Dself,+ and Dself,−, and the build-up of concentration gradients in electrolytes under an applied potential is quantified by Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coefficients, D0+, D0-, and D+-. The Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coefficients can be used to predict the velocities of the ions at very early times after an electric field is applied across the electrolyte. The surprising result is that D0- is negative in certain concentration windows. A consequence of this finding is that at these concentrations, both cations and anions are predicted to migrate toward the positive electrode at early times. We describe the controversies that surround this result. Knowledge of the Stefan-Maxwell diffusion coefficients enable prediction of the limiting current. We argue that the limiting current is the most important characteristic of an electrolyte. Excellent agreement between theoretical and experimental limiting current is seen in PEO/LiTFSI mixtures. What sequence of monomers that, when polymerized, will lead to the highest limiting current remains an important unanswered question. It is our hope that the approach presented in this review will guide the development of such polymers
Design Processes for OBM first in the NPD process

For production-oriented companies such as original brand manufacturers (OBMs), management of the NPD cycle is essential to how their business functions. However, because these companies focus on R&D activities,engineering and manufacturing goods, they often see design as a small fragment of their product development cycle rather than as an integral part of the process. This paper investigates current design processes, identifying how each process is run by different businesses. Literature reviews and in-depth interviews are undertaken with key NPD project personnel from OBM firms and international brands, to evaluate firms’ current problems operating the existing processes. The findings show an overview of how the design process is carried out by various functional groups in OBM consumer electronics companies and international brands respectively. It is anticipated that contributions to this research will guide OBM firms’ activities in each process of design, and help to improve managing overall design practices
Effect of worksheet scaffolds on student learning in problem-based learning
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of worksheets as a scaffolding tool on students’ learning achievement in a problem-based learning (PBL) environment. Seventeen PBL classes (N = 241) were randomly assigned to two experimental groups—one with a worksheet provided and the other without. Students’ learning of the topic at hand was evaluated by comparing results from pre- and post-lesson concept recall tests. We also obtained information about students’ perceptions of factors impacting their learning using a Learning Impact Questionnaire. The data was analyzed by means of analyses of variance. Results of the study indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the levels of understanding for both groups of students. In addition, survey results revealed that the strongest factor perceived by students to impact their learning in a PBL context is the tutor followed by team and class dynamics, while the influence of the worksheet was rated lowest. These findings suggest that scaffolds such as worksheets may not play a significant role in enhancing students’ learning within the social constructivist framework of problem-based learning. On the other hand, the importance of the role of tutor and collaborative small group learning which are key features of PBL is reinforced
A performance comparison of the contiguous allocation strategies in 3D mesh connected multicomputers
The performance of contiguous allocation strategies can be significantly affected by the distribution of job execution times. In this paper, the performance of the existing contiguous allocation strategies for 3D mesh multicomputers is re-visited in the context of heavy-tailed distributions (e.g., a Bounded Pareto distribution). The strategies are evaluated and compared using simulation experiments for both First-Come-First-Served (FCFS) and Shortest-Service-Demand (SSD) scheduling strategies under a variety of system loads and system sizes. The results show that the performance of the allocation strategies degrades considerably when job execution times follow a heavy-tailed distribution. Moreover, SSD copes much better than FCFS scheduling strategy in the presence of heavy-tailed job execution times. The results also show that the strategies that depend on a list of allocated sub-meshes for both allocation and deallocation have lower allocation overhead and deliver good system performance in terms of average turnaround time and mean system utilization
A Comparative Study Using CFD to Predict Iced Airfoil Aerodynamics
WIND, Fluent, and PowerFLOW were used to predict the lift, drag, and moment coefficients of a business-jet airfoil with a rime ice (rough and jagged, but no protruding horns) and with a glaze ice (rough and jagged end has two or more protruding horns) for angles of attack from zero to and after stall. The performance of the following turbulence models were examined by comparing predictions with available experimental data. Spalart-Allmaras (S-A), RNG k-epsilon, shear-stress transport, v(sup 2)-f, and a differential Reynolds stress model with and without non-equilibrium wall functions. For steady RANS simulations, WIND and FLUENT were found to give nearly identical results if the grid about the iced airfoil, the turbulence model, and the order of accuracy of the numerical schemes used are the same. The use of wall functions was found to be acceptable for the rime ice configuration and the flow conditions examined. For rime ice, the S-A model was found to predict accurately until near the stall angle. For glaze ice, the CFD predictions were much less satisfactory for all turbulence models and codes investigated because of the large separated region produced by the horns. For unsteady RANS, WIND and FLUENT did not provide better results. PowerFLOW, based on the Lattice Boltzmann method, gave excellent results for the lift coefficient at and near stall for the rime ice, where the flow is inherently unsteady

A hierarchical key pre-distribution scheme for fog networks
Security in fog computing is multi-faceted, and one particular challenge is establishing a secure communication channel between fog nodes and end devices. This emphasizes the importance of designing efficient and secret key distribution scheme to facilitate fog nodes and end devices to establish secure communication channels. Existing secure key distribution schemes designed for hierarchical networks may be deployable in fog computing, but they incur high computational and communication overheads and thus consume significant memory. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical key pre-distribution scheme based on “Residual Design” for fog networks. The proposed key distribution scheme is designed to minimize storage overhead and memory consumption, while increasing network scalability. The scheme is also designed to be secure against node capture attacks. We demonstrate that in an equal-size network, our scheme achieves around 84% improvement in terms of node storage overhead, and around 96% improvement in terms of network scalability. Our research paves the way for building an efficient key management framework for secure communication within the hierarchical network of fog nodes and end devices.

Emergency department triage nurse initiated pain management
Objectives: 1) To determine the time difference to analgesia administration for patients with painful limb conditions using an emergency triage nurse initiated pain management protocol versus analgesia administration by emergency doctors after consultation. 2) To determine the frequency of adverse events following such a protocol implementation. Methods: For emergency department patients with isolated limb injury or inflammation, a triage nurse initiated pain management policy was implemented in 2004. The protocol did not require the triage nurse to consult a physician. The triage nurse would record the chief complaint, past medical history, allergy, medication, vital signs, and pain severity using a combination of 0 to 10 numerical and face pain scales. Unless contraindicated, the triage nurse would offer intramuscular ketorolac to patients with pain score ≥5. Medical charts of patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were reviewed from 1 to 30 September 2004. Results: Two hundred seventy-three patients were reviewed, of whom 73.3% were men and the overall mean age was 40.1 years (standard deviation SD 19.5). Two hundred and nine patients (76.6%) had pain score recorded at triage, and the median was 6. One hundred and five patients (38.5%) received analgesia, of which 69 were given by triage nurses and 36 by physicians. The mean time interval for analgesia given by triage nurse was 2.5 minutes (SD 8.9) and that for physician was significantly longer (p<0.0001) at 68.2 minutes (SD 59.5). There was no adverse drug reaction observed in patients who received intramuscular ketorolac given by triage nurses. Conclusion: The time interval for pain relief of emergency department patients with painful limb conditions was reduced when the triage nurse initiated pain management
Load carrying capacity of a heterogeneous surface bearing
It has been shown before that liquids can slip at a solid boundary, which prompted the idea that parallel-surfaces bearings can be achieved just by alternating slip and non-slip regions in the direction of fluid flow. The amount of slip at the wall depends on the surface tension at the liquid–solid interface, which in turn depends on the chemical state of the surface and its roughness. In the present study a heterogeneous surface was obtained by coating half of a circular glass disc with a coating repellant to glycerol. A rotating glass disc was placed at a known/calibrated distance and the gap was filled with glycerol. With the mobile surface moving from the direction of slip to non-slip region it can be theoretically shown that a pressure build up can be achieved. The pressure gradient in the two regions is constant, similar to that in a Rayleigh step bearing, with the maximum pressure at the separation line. The heterogeneous disc was placed on a holder supported by a load cell thus the force generated by this pressure increase can be measured accurately. Tests were carried out at different sliding speeds and gaps and the load carried was measured and subsequently compared with theoretical calculations. This allowed the slip coefficient to be evaluated
Changes of Adult Population Health Status in China from 2003 to 2008
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the change in health status of China’s adult population between the years of 2003 and 2008 due to rapid economic growth and medical system improvement. Methods: Data from the third and fourth Chinese national health services surveys covering 141,927 residents in 2003 and 136,371 residents in 2008 who were aged.18 years were analyzed. Results: Chinese respondents in 2008 were more likely to report disease than in 2003. Smoking slightly decreased among men and women, and regular exercise showed much improvement. Stratified analyses revealed significant subpopulation disparities in rate ratios for 2008/2003 in the presence of chronic disease, with greater increases among women, elderly, the Han nationality, unmarried and widow, illiterate, rural, and regions east of China than other groups. Conclusions: Chinese adults in 2008 had worse health status than in 2003 in terms of presence of chronic disease. China’s reform of health care will face more complex challenges in coming years from the deteriorating health status in Chinese adults
