    Centralized and decentralized management of groundwater with multiple users

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.In this work, we investigate two groundwater inventory management schemes with multiple users in a dynamic game-theoretic structure: (i) under the centralized management scheme, users are allowed to pump water from a common aquifer with the supervision of a social planner, and (ii) under the decentralized management scheme, each user is allowed to pump water from a common aquifer making usage decisions individually in a non-cooperative fashion. This work is motivated by the work of Saak and Peterson [14], which considers a model with two identical users sharing a common aquifer over a two-period planning horizon. In our work, the model and results of Saak and Peterson [14] are generalized in several directions. We first build on and extend their work to the case of n non-identical users distributed over a common aquifer region. Furthermore, we consider two different geometric configurations overlying the aquifer, namely, the strip and the ring configurations. In each configuration, general analytical results of the optimal groundwater usage are obtained and numerical examples are discussed for both centralized and decentralized problems. 2011 Elsevier B.V.     Convection-reaction equation based magnetic resonance electrical properties tomography (cr-MREPT)

    Cataloged from PDF version of article.Images of electrical conductivity and permittivity of tissues may be used for diagnostic purposes as well as for estimating local specific absorption rate distributions. Magnetic resonance electrical properties tomography (MREPT) aims at noninvasively obtaining conductivity and permittivity images at radio-frequency frequencies of magnetic resonance imaging systems. MREPT algorithms are based on measuring the B1 field which is perturbed by the electrical properties of the imaged object. In this study, the relation between the electrical properties and the measured B1 field is formulated for the first time as a well-known convection-reaction equation. The suggested novel algorithm, called “cr-MREPT,” is based on the solution of this equation on a triangular mesh, and in contrast to previously proposed algorithms, it is applicable in practice not only for regions where electrical properties are relatively constant but also for regions where they vary. The convective field of the convection-reaction equation depends on the spatial derivatives of the B1 field, and in the regions where its magnitude is low, a spot-like artifact is observed in the reconstructed electrical properties images. For eliminating this artifact, two different methods are developed, namely “constrained cr-MREPT” and “double-excitation cr-MREPT.” Successful reconstructions are obtained using noisy and noise-free simulated data, and experimental data from phantoms

    A prospective cohort study of postoperative complications in the management of perforated peptic ulcer

    BACKGROUND: With dwindling rates of postoperative mortality in perforated peptic ulcer that is attributable to H(2)-receptor blocker usage, there is a need to shift the focus towards the prevention of postoperative morbidity. Further, the simultaneous contribution of several putative clinical predictors to this postoperative morbidity is not fully appreciated. Our objective was to assess the predictors of the risk, rate and number of postoperative complications in surgically treated patients of perforated peptic ulcer. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of 96 subjects presenting as perforated peptic ulcer and treated using Graham's omentoplatsy patch or gastrojejunostomy (with total truncal vagotomy), we assessed the association of clinical predictors with three domains of postoperative complications: the risk of developing a complication, the rate of developing the first complication and the risk of developing higher number of complications. We used multiple regression methods – logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards regression and Poisson regression, respectively – to examine the association of the predictors with these three domains. RESULTS: We observed that the risk of developing a postoperative complication was significantly influenced by the presence of a concomitant medical illness [odds ratio (OR) = 8.9, p = 0.001], abdominal distension (3.8, 0.048) and a need of blood transfusion (OR = 8.2, p = 0.027). Using Poisson regression, it was observed that the risk for a higher number of complications was influenced by the same three factors [relative risk (RR) = 2.6, p = 0.015; RR = 4.6, p < 0.001; and RR = 2.4, p = 0.002; respectively]. However, the rate of development of complications was influenced by a history suggestive of shock [relative hazards (RH) = 3.4, p = 0.002] and A(- )blood group (RH = 4.7, p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: Abdominal distension, presence of a concomitant medical illness and a history suggestive of shock at the time of admission warrant a closer and alacritous postoperative management in patients of perforated peptic ulcer

    Hydroxyapatite lanthanum oxide composites

    In the present study a commercially synthetic hydroxyapatite powders (CSHAp) were doped with lanthanum oxide (5 and 10 wt.% La₂O₃). The composite powders were well homogenized and pelleted in an uniaxial mould at 350 MPa. Pelleted green bodies were sintered at five different temperatures. Finally, the effect of La₂O₃ amount on the microstructural and mechanical properties of CSHA was investigated. Microstructural properties were detected by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical properties of the sintered samples were determined by the density, hardness and compression strength measurements. Experimental results show that the mechanical properties of HA can be improved by the doping of La₂O

    Benign giant Schwannoma located in the upper arm

    WOS: A1997XK12400019PubMed ID: 9229103A 72-year-old-female presented with a giant schwannoma on the medial side of her right upper arm. Ultrasonographic and magnetic resonance imaging examinations showed that it was almost a totally cystic lesion. It was initially misdiagnosed as a hydatid cyst. After excision of the tumor, histopathological examination revealed that it was a schwannoma composed of two types of regions known as Antoni A and B regions. The tumor was 15 x 8 x 7 cm in size. There were no neurological sequelae after the operation. This is probably the biggest schwannoma of the upper extremity reported
