In the present work, the immobilization of catalase into natural active carbon and active carbon modified by hydrochloric acid was carried out. In the experimental section, the effects of pH, ionic strength andreaction temperature were chosen as parameters, with experiments performed in batch system. For the optimization of immobilization procedure, values of kinetic parameters were evaluated. It was observedthat storage and operational stabilities of the enzyme increased with immobilization. The results obtained from experiments showed that active carbon is a valuable support for the adsorption of enzymes

Comparison of finite element analysis results with strain gauge measurements of a front axle housing

The strength of the front axle of tractors used on rough terrain is crucial in countries in which agriculture is widespread. Rough agricultural fields, rugged village roads, and ground irregularities cause unexpected reaction forces on the axles. Thus, it is important to analyze the front axle of a tractor with respect to stress, which eventually leads to cracks and premature failure. In this study, ANSYS 13.0 finite element analysis (FEA) software (ANSYS, 2010) was used to predict the strength of a design under loading conditions. ANSYS 13.0 allows products to be tested in a virtual environment and helps to prevent problems that may arise later and accordingly improve them. This study aims to investigate the stresses that occur on the housing of the front axle of a tractor. The reaction forces acting on the front axle housing can cause cracks near the middle of the housing. The study applies a static load of 30 000 N to both hubs at the end of the front axle housing and uses the FEA method to predict and evaluate the maximum stress areas on the housing. Strain gauges are bonded to these locations to measure the real-life stresses on the axle housing in these areas. The results of the FEA and strain gauge measurements were compared, and a correlation was found with 98 % accuracy.</p

Needs, Perceptions and Education in Sarcoidosis: A Live Interactive Survey of Patients and Partners

Objectives: Sarcoidosis is a chronic, multisystem disease with often a major impact on quality of life. Information on unmet needs of patients and their partners is lacking. We assessed needs and perceptions of sarcoidosis patients and their partners. Methods: During patient information meetings in 2015 and 2017 in the Erasmus University Medical Center, we interviewed patients and partners using interactive voting boxes. Patients responded anonymously to 17 questions. Answers were projected directly on the screen in the room. Results: 210 patients and 132 partners participated. Sarcoidosis has a subjective significant impact on lives of both p

Digital Fabrication of Mathematical Models via Low-Cost 3D FDM Desktop Printer

Additive manufacturing technology is developed throughout the 1980's and 1990's. This technology makes the realization of mathematical models much easier. The challenge focused is here to fabricate real objects from very complex mathematical models by using a low-cost 3D fused deposition modeling desktop printer. Thus this brings the intangible mathematical expressions to life. In this study it is illustrated that complex mathematical expressions are not only numbers and symbols but also they are real life objects. In the examples, some mathematical functions such as Möbius strip, Schwartz functions and their boundary conditions are introduced and then digitally fabricated. This work shows that how complex functional mathematical models that cannot be manufactured with classical engineering methods or very difficult to produce can be fabricated by using a 3D FDM desktop printer

Preparation of bio-electrodes via Langmuir-Blodgett technique for pharmaceutical and waste industries and their biosensor application

Langmuir films of cationic octadecylamine (ODA+) has been prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film technique and is used as an immobilization matrix for polyphenol oxidase (PPO). The immobilization areas of PPO were demonstrated by an electrostatic surface potential map. PPO-ODA complexes were transferred onto ITO electrode which was then characterized for its catalytic and optical properties. Very high and maintained PPO activity of PPO-ODA/ITO bio-electrode was shown by UV–vis absorption studies. The highly sensitive and stability biosensor behavior of the bio-electrode was shown via cyclic voltammetry studies. The stability, sensitivity, LOD and, LOQ values of the prepared sensor were calculated as 94.83% (after two weeks), 1.839 ”AmM-1 cm-2, 0.644 ”M and, 0.214 ”M, respectively for pyrocatechol in a wide linear range (10–100 mM). Successful prepare of the bio-electrode was confirmed from SEM and FT-IR techniques. This study revealed that the immobilization with LB film techniques contributes to the stability and recycling of PPO and its use in biological systems is superior to other film techniques mentioned in the literature. In this study, disadvantages that are observed in enzyme-based sensors were minimized. The first application of the bio-electrodes can be a promising tool towards enzymatic studies and opens a new path for industrial applications such as removing and transforming toxic compounds in industrial processes, decolorization, and drug industry such as biotechnological production of L-DOPA. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.2016-FBE-B05The financial support by “ Scientific Research Fund of Iğdır University Project Council (Project No. 2016-FBE-B05)” is gratefully acknowledged. Ultrasonic characterisation of hot-rolled and heat-treated plain carbon steels

    No full text
The aim of the study is to characterise hot-rolled and heat-treated plain-C steels (SAE 1020 and 1050) by ultrasonic velocity and attenuation measurements. Various heat treatment procedures were applied by changing the austenitisation temperature and the cooling rate to distinguish the affects of grain size and microstructural phases on ultrasonic properties. Velocities of both longitudinal and transversal waves were measured and backwall echo patterns were obtained for each specimen. The variations in the ultrasonic velocity and attenuation behaviour were discussed considering the microstructural investigations and hardness test results

Feasibility of a comprehensive home monitoring program for sarcoidosis

textabstractSarcoidosis is a chronic, heterogeneous disease which most commonly affects the lungs. Currently, evidence-based and individually tailored treatment options in sarcoidosis are lacking. We aimed to evaluate patient experiences with a home monitoring program for sarcoidosis and assess whether home monitoring is a feasible tool to enhance personalized treatment. Outpatients with pulmonary sarcoidosis tested the home monitoring program “Sarconline” for one month. This is a secured personal platform which consists of online p

One-year follow-up study of serial orthotic treatment in two cases with arthrogrypotic syndromes who have bilateral knee flexion contractures

    No full text
Background: The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effectiveness of serial splinting in two children with bilateral knee flexion contractures due to arthrogrypotic syndrome. Case description and methods: We evaluated the infants' passive knee extension limitation and motor development levels. Serial orthotic treatment was applied to decrease bilateral knee flexion contractures in the knees of the subjects. The follow-up period was up to 1 year. Findings and outcomes: At the end of serial orthotic treatment, improvement in bilateral passive extension limitation (for the first case, the increase in passive range of extension was approximately 75°, for the second case it was 45°) was achieved in both cases. Conclusion: We believe that serial orthotic intervention is effective in patients with arthrogrypotic syndrome at the preoperative period or in patients who cannot be operated on. Further studies are needed for evaluation of effectiveness of this method. © The International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics 2014
