A Kato type Theorem for the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations with a moving rigid body
The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes
equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous
open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler
equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation
rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the
viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in
an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue
of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear if the
additional difficulties linked to the body's dynamic make this issue more
difficult or not. In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body in an
incompressible fluid occupying the complementary set in the space and we prove
that a Kato type condition implies the convergence of the fluid velocity and of
the body velocity as well, what seems to indicate that an answer in the case of
a fixed boundary could also bring an answer to the case where there is a moving
body in the fluid
Real-Time Ultrasonic Tracking of an Intraoperative Needle Tip with Integrated Fibre-Optic Hydrophone
We have developed a real-time ultrasound needle tracking system based on a fibre-optic hydrophone integrated into an intraoperative needle. The system is intended to track the location of a needle tip during minimally invasive surgical procedures that rely on handheld ultrasound guidance. During these procedures, clear visibility of the needle tip is essential to reach the procedure target and avoid adverse events due to erroneous needle placement. The ultrasound emitted by the handheld probe is detected by the hydrophone and used to draw a cursor marking the position of the needle tip within the B-mode ultrasound image. The tracking accuracy was assessed by comparison to manual labelling of the location of the needle tip within the ultrasound images and found to be ±2.2 mm
Microtomography developments on the ANATOMIX beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL
The new ANATOMIX beamline at Synchrotron SOLEIL is dedicated to hard X-ray
full-field tomography techniques. Operating in a range of photon energies from
approximately 5 to 50 keV, it offers both parallel-beam projection
microtomography and nanotomography using a zone-plate transmission X-ray
microscope and thus covers a range of spatial resolution from 20 nm to 20
m, expressed in terms of useful pixel size. Here we describe the
microtomography instrumentation and its performance.Comment: Paper submitted for publication in the Proceedings of the 15th

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase dentified as a key enzyme in erythrocytic Plasmodium falciparum carbon metabolism
Phospoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) is absent from humans but encoded in thePlasmodium falciparum genome, suggesting that PEPC has a parasite-specific function. To investigate its importance in P. falciparum, we generated a pepc null mutant (D10Δpepc), which was only achievable when malate, a reduction product of oxaloacetate, was added to the growth medium. D10Δpepc had a severe growth defect in vitro, which was partially reversed by addition of malate or fumarate, suggesting that pepc may be essential in vivo. Targeted metabolomics using 13C-U-D-glucose and 13C-bicarbonate showed that the conversion of glycolytically-derived PEP into malate, fumarate, aspartate and citrate was abolished in D10Δpepc and that pentose phosphate pathway metabolites and glycerol 3-phosphate were present at increased levels. In contrast, metabolism of the carbon skeleton of 13C,15N-U-glutamine was similar in both parasite lines, although the flux was lower in D10Δpepc; it also confirmed the operation of a complete forward TCA cycle in the wild type parasite. Overall, these data confirm the CO2 fixing activity of PEPC and suggest that it provides metabolites essential for TCA cycle anaplerosis and the maintenance of cytosolic and mitochondrial redox balance. Moreover, these findings imply that PEPC may be an exploitable target for future drug discovery

Weak-strong uniqueness for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system
We prove weak-strong uniqueness results for the isentropic compressible
Navier-Stokes system on the torus. In other words, we give conditions on a
strong solution so that it is unique in a class of weak solutions. Known
weak-strong uniqueness results are improved. Classical uniqueness results for
this equation follow naturally.Comment: 12 page
An experimental and kinetic modelling study of the oxidation of the four isomers of butanol
Butanol, an alcohol which can be produced from biomass sources, has received
recent interest as an alternative to gasoline for use in spark ignition engines
and as a possible blending compound with fossil diesel or biodiesel. Therefore,
the autoignition of the four isomers of butanol (1-butanol, 2-butanol,
iso-butanol, and tert-butanol) has been experimentally studied at high
temperatures in a shock tube and a kinetic mechanism for description of their
high-temperature oxidation has been developed. Ignition delay times for
butanol/oxygen/argon mixtures have been measured behind reflected shock waves
at temperatures and pressures ranging from approximately 1200 to 1800 K and 1
to 4 bar. Electronically excited OH emission and pressure measurements were
used to determine ignition delay times. A detailed kinetic mechanism has been
developed to describe the oxidation of the butanol isomers and validated by
comparison to the shock tube measurements. Reaction flux and sensitivity
analysis indicate that the consumption of 1 butanol and iso-butanol, the most
reactive isomers, takes place primarily by H-atom abstraction resulting in the
formation of radicals, the decomposition of which yields highly reactive
branching agents, H-atoms and OH radicals. Conversely, the consumption of tert
butanol and 2-butanol, the least reactive isomers, takes place primarily via
dehydration, resulting in the formation of alkenes, which lead to resonance
stabilized radicals with very low reactivity. To our knowledge, the ignition
delay measurements and oxidation mechanism presented here for 2-butanol,
iso-butanol, and tert butanol are the first of their kind.
From Quantum Systems to L-Functions: Pair Correlation Statistics and Beyond
The discovery of connections between the distribution of energy levels of
heavy nuclei and spacings between prime numbers has been one of the most
surprising and fruitful observations in the twentieth century. The connection
between the two areas was first observed through Montgomery's work on the pair
correlation of zeros of the Riemann zeta function. As its generalizations and
consequences have motivated much of the following work, and to this day remains
one of the most important outstanding conjectures in the field, it occupies a
central role in our discussion below. We describe some of the many techniques
and results from the past sixty years, especially the important roles played by
numerical and experimental investigations, that led to the discovery of the
connections and progress towards understanding the behaviors. In our survey of
these two areas, we describe the common mathematics that explains the
remarkable universality. We conclude with some thoughts on what might lie ahead
in the pair correlation of zeros of the zeta function, and other similar
quantities.Comment: Version 1.1, 50 pages, 6 figures. To appear in "Open Problems in
