    Effect of combined oral contraceptive use on platelet volume in women at reproductive age

    Investigation: Combined oral contraceptives use is associated with an increased risk of developing venous and arterial thromboembolic events. Platelet size, measured as mean platelet volume (MPV), is associated with platelet reactivity. Methods: Ninety-five women using oral contraceptives for contraception were investigated retrospectively. The patients' blood pressure, pulse and hematological values at application and at the sixth month were evaluated retrospectively. Results: There was no difference between the values of blood pressure (systolic and diastolic), pulse, hematological values (which contain leukocytes, platelets and mean platelet volume) at application and at the sixth month. Conclusion: We determined that using oral contraceptives for contraception did not change MPV values in young women

    Genetic characterization of grape (Vitis vinifera L.) germplasm from Southeast Anatolia by SSR markers

    Southeast Anatolia is located in close proximity to the center of origin of grapes and is an important grape producing area of Turkey. The important location of this region for grape genetic diversity together with its diverse ecological conditions may have led to the development of grape germplasm that is unique to this region. However, so far little has been done to genetically analyze this grape germplasm. In this study, we genetically analyzed 55 grape cultivars originating from six different provinces of this region using 14 simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci and a number of ampeolographic characteristics. Based on these analyses, one case of synonymous and four cases of homonymous grape cultivars were identified. The contribution of our results to better characterization of the grape germplasm of the region as well as future germplasm management and breeding efforts is discussed

    Stress intensity factors under combined bending and torsion moments

    This paper discusses stress intensity factor (SIF) calculations for surface cracks in round bars subjected to combined torsion and bending loadings. Different crack aspect ratios, a/b, ranging from 0.0 to 1.2 and relative crack depths, a/D, ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 were considered. Since the loading was non-symmetrical for torsion loadings, a whole finite element model was constructed. Then, the individual and combined bending and torsion loadings were remotely applied to the model. The equivalent SIF method, F* EQ, was then used explicitly to combine the individual SIFs from the bending and torsion loadings. A comparison was then carried out with the combined SIF, F* FE, obtained using the finite element analysis (FEA) under similar loadings. It was found that the equivalent SIF method successfully predicted the combined SIF for Mode I. However, discrepancies between the results determined from the different approaches occurred when FIII was involved. It was also noted that the predicted F* FE using FEA was higher than the F* EQ predicted through the equivalent SIF method due to the difference in crack face interactions
