Spin torque ferromagnetic resonance with magnetic field modulation
We demonstrate a technique of broadband spin torque ferromagnetic resonance
(ST-FMR) with magnetic field modulation for measurements of spin wave
properties in magnetic nanostructures. This technique gives great improvement
in sensitivity over the conventional ST-FMR measurements, and application of
this technique to nanoscale magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) reveals a rich
spectrum of standing spin wave eigenmodes. Comparison of the ST-FMR
measurements with micromagnetic simulations of the spin wave spectrum allows us
to explain the character of low-frequency magnetic excitations in nanoscale
MTJs.Comment: Also see: http://faculty.sites.uci.edu/krivorotovgroup
Boron adatom adsorption on graphene: A case study in computational chemistry methods for surface interactions
Though weak surface interactions and adsorption can play an important role in
plasma processing and materials science, they are not necessarily simple to
model. A boron adatom adsorbed on a graphene sheet serves as a case study for
how carefully one must select the correct technique from a toolbox of
computational chemistry methods. Using a variety of molecular dynamics
potentials and density functional theory functionals, we evaluate the
adsorption energy, investigate barriers to adsorption and migration, calculate
corresponding reaction rates, and show that a surprisingly high level of theory
may be necessary to verify that the system is described correctly
Magnetic phase transitions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO multilayers
We study thin films and magnetic tunnel junction nanopillars based on
Ta/CoFeB/MgO multilayers by electrical transport and
magnetometry measurements. These measurements suggest that an ultrathin
magnetic oxide layer forms at the CoFeB/MgO interface. At
approximately 160 K, the oxide undergoes a phase transition from an insulating
antiferromagnet at low temperatures to a conductive weak ferromagnet at high
temperatures. This interfacial magnetic oxide is expected to have significant
impact on the magnetic properties of CoFeB-based multilayers used in spin
torque memories
A RARE CASE OF TREATMENT POLICY FOR RECURRENT NEUROENDOCRINE CARCINOMA OF THE ANAL CANAL
A rare case of multicomponental treatment of low-differentiated anal neuroendocrine cancer is presented. By using combined treatment involving chemotherapy, local hyperthermia and radiotherapy a complete response of recurrent neuroendocrine cancer has been achieved.A review of modern methods of diagnostics and treatment of rectal neurtoendocrine tumors is presented and possibilities of modern combined treatment are discussed
Prevalence of diabetes mellitus in patients with acromegaly
Early carbohydrate metabolism disorders (ECMDs) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are frequently associated with acromegaly. We aimed to assess the prevalence of ECMDs in patients with acromegaly and to compare the results with those in adults without acromegaly using two population-based epidemiologic surveys. We evaluated 97 patients with acromegaly in several phases of their disease (mean age, 56 years and estimated duration of acromegaly, 12.5 years). An oral glucose tolerance test was done in those not yet diagnosed with DM to reveal asymptomatic DM or ECMDs (impaired glucose tolerance+impaired fasting glucose). Comparisons were made between patients with acromegaly and participants from the general adult population (n=435) and an adult population with multiple type 2 diabetes risk factors (n=314), matched for gender, age and BMI. DM was diagnosed in 51 patients with acromegaly (52.5%) and 14.3% of the general population (P<0.001). The prevalence of ECMDs was also higher in patients with acromegaly than in the general population and in the high-risk group; only 22% of patients with acromegaly were normoglycaemic. The prevalence of newly diagnosed ECMDs or DM was 1.3-1.5 times higher in patients with acromegaly compared with the high-risk group. Patients with acromegaly having ECMDs or DM were older, more obese and had longer disease duration and higher IGF1 levels (Z-score). Logistic regression showed that the severity of glucose derangement was predicted by age, BMI and IGF1 levels. In patients with acromegaly, the prevalence of DM and ECMDs considerably exceeds that of the general population and of a high-risk group, and development of DM depends on age, BMI and IGF1 levels

Objective of this study is investigation of effectiveness of electromiostimulation of anal sphincter for incontinence treatment after sphincter saving surgery for distal rectal cancer.Materials and methods. 54 patients after ultra-low anterior resection with hand-sewn coloanal anastomosis performed between end of 2008 till February of 2010 entered the trial. All patients received preoperative radiotherapy.Results. All patients showed marked improvement in continence (according to Wexner scale) and higher quality of life after electromiostimulation (by FIQL score).Conclusion. Electromiostimulation of anal sphincter for patients after ultra-low anterior resection is effective and allows improvement of functional results and accelerate social rehabilitation of this group of patients.
