Quantum Reality and Measurement: A Quantum Logical Approach
The recently established universal uncertainty principle revealed that two
nowhere commuting observables can be measured simultaneously in some state,
whereas they have no joint probability distribution in any state. Thus, one
measuring apparatus can simultaneously measure two observables that have no
simultaneous reality. In order to reconcile this discrepancy, an approach based
on quantum logic is proposed to establish the relation between quantum reality
and measurement. We provide a language speaking of values of observables
independent of measurement based on quantum logic and we construct in this
language the state-dependent notions of joint determinateness, value identity,
and simultaneous measurability. This naturally provides a contextual
interpretation, in which we can safely claim such a statement that one
measuring apparatus measures one observable in one context and simultaneously
it measures another nowhere commuting observable in another incompatible
context.Comment: 16 pages, Latex. Presented at the Conference "Quantum Theory:

Contemporary Unscrambling the Scepticism of Chuang-tzu
Based on cognitive relativity, the scepticism of Chuang-tzu concludes that "How can I know it","Don't speak 'yes' or 'no'",suspension of judgement and so on. The scepticism of Chuang-tzu ,which can be expressed by the modes of skepticism advanced by contemporary skeptics and whose arguments include "the closure argument"and"ignorance argument",is not global but local.~
On Upper Bounds for Toroidal Mosaic Numbers
In this paper, we work to construct mosaic representations of knots on the
torus, rather than in the plane. This consists of a particular choice of the
ambient group, as well as different definitions of contiguous and suitably
connected. We present conditions under which mosaic numbers might decrease by
this projection, and present a tool to measure this reduction. We show that the
order of edge identification in construction of the torus sometimes yields
different resultant knots from a given mosaic when reversed. Additionally, in
the Appendix we give the catalog of all 2 by 2 torus mosaics.Comment: 10 pages, 111 figure
Best finite constrained approximations of one-dimensional probabilities
This paper studies best finitely supported approximations of one-dimensional
probability measures with respect to the -Kantorovich (or transport)
distance, where either the locations or the weights of the approximations'
atoms are prescribed. Necessary and sufficient optimality conditions are
established, and the rate of convergence (as the number of atoms goes to
infinity) is discussed. In view of emerging mathematical and statistical
applications, special attention is given to the case of best uniform
approximations (i.e., all atoms having equal weight). The approach developed in
this paper is elementary; it is based on best approximations of (monotone)
-functions by step functions, and thus different from, yet naturally
complementary to, the classical Voronoi partition approach.Comment: To appear in J. Approx. Theor
An Analysis of Mutual Communication between Qubits by Capacitive Coupling
A behavior of a two qubit system coupled by the electric capacitance has been
studied quantum mechanically. We found that the interaction is essentially the
same as the one for the dipole-dipole interaction; i.e., qubit-qubit coupling
of the NMR quantum gate. Therefore a quantum gate could be constructed by the
same operation sequence for the NMR device if the coupling is small enough. The
result gives an information to the effort of development of the devices
assuming capacitive coupling between qubits.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures Revised and Replaced on Apr. 8 200
