Pressure-induced changes in the magnetic and valence state of EuFe2As2
We present the results of electrical resistivity, ac specific heat, magnetic
susceptibility, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular
dichroism (XMCD) of the ternary iron arsenide EuFe2As2 single crystal under
pressure. Applying pressure leads to a continuous suppression of the
antiferromagnetism associated with Fe moments and the antiferromagnetic
transition temperature becomes zero in the vicinity of a critical pressure Pc
~2.5-2.7 GPa. Pressure-induced re-entrant superconductivity, which is highly
sensitive to the homogeneity of the pressure, only appears in the narrow
pressure region in the vicinity of Pc due to the competition between
superconductivity and the antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu2+ moments. The
antiferromagnetic state of Eu2+ moments changes to the ferromagnetic state
above 6 GPa. We also found that the ferromagnetic order is suppressed with
further increasing pressure, which is connected with a valence change of Eu
ions.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Sharp lines in the absorption edge of EuTe and PbEuTe in high magnetic fields
The optical absorption spectra in the region of the \fd transition energies
of epitaxial layers of of EuTe and \PbEuTe, grown by molecular beam epitaxy,
were studied using circularly polarized light, in the Faraday configuration.
Under \sigmam polarization a sharp symmetric absorption line (full width at
half-maximum 0.041 eV) emerges at the low energy side of the band-edge
absorption, for magnetic fields intensities greater than 6 T. The absorption
line shows a huge red shift (35 meV/T) with increasing magnetic fields. The
peak position of the absorption line as a function of magnetic field is
dominated by the {\em d-f} exchange interaction of the excited electron and the
\Euion spins in the lattice. The {\em d-f} exchange interaction energy was
estimated to be eV. In \PbEuTe the same absorption line
is detected, but it is broader, due to alloy disorder, indicating that the
excitation is localized within a finite radius. From a comparison of the
absorption spectra in EuTe and \PbEuTe the characteristic radius of the
excitation is estimated to be \AA.Comment: Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter (2004, at press
Raman Spectroscopy Study of Impacted DLC Coatings
Raman scattering is an excellent tool to characterize
the structure of carbon atoms in diamond-like carbon
(DLC). The study of DLC coatings in the sliding
conditions has been conducted for a decade using
Raman spectroscopy analysis. However, there is still
insufficient information about how the structure of DLC
coatings changes during repetitive impact. In this paper
changes in the structure under 90o repetitive impact at a
large number of cycles are presented

Abnormal expansion of naïve B lymphocytes after unrelated cord blood transplantation – a case report
A 33-year-old woman underwent unrelated cord blood transplantation (U-CBT) for myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS)-related secondary AML. She showed impressive increases in the number of CD19(+) B cells in bone marrow and CD19(+)27(−)IgD(+) B cells in peripheral blood from about 1 month to 3 months after U-CBT. The serum level of IL-6 temporarily increased after transplantation, and this increase seemed to be correlated with the expansion of CD19(+) B cells. Although, compared with BMT, little is known about the kinetics of hematological and immunological reconstitution in U-CBT, there was initial B-cell recovery after CBT as some described. This B cell recovery may be associated with a high number of B-cell precursors present in cord blood (CB). The phenomenon of naïve B lymphocyte expansion that we found might be associated with a high number of B-cell precursors present in CB
WIMPs search by means of the highly segmented scintillator
The highly sensitive method to search for WIMPs dark matter particles is
proposed. An array of thin NaI(Tl) plate has the great selectivity for
distinguishing the WIMPs events and background ones. The principle of signal
selection for WIMPs is described. The high sensitivity for SD (spin-dependent)
type WIMPs is expected by applying multi-layer system of NaI(Tl) detector.Comment: 11 pages, added some sentences to make the arguments clea
Effects of Triazole Derivatives on Strigolactone Levels and Growth Retardation in Rice
We previously discovered a lead compound for strigolactone (SL) biosynthesis inhibitors, TIS13 (2,2-dimethyl-7-phenoxy-4-(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)heptan-3-ol). Here, we carried out a structure-activity relationship study of TIS13 to discover more potent and specific SL biosynthesis inhibitor because TIS13 has a severe side effect at high concentrations, including retardation of the growth of rice seedlings. TIS108, a new TIS13 derivative, was found to be a more specific SL biosynthesis inhibitor than TIS13. Treatment of rice seedlings with TIS108 reduced SL levels in both roots and root exudates in a concentration-dependent manner and did not reduce plant height. In addition, root exudates of TIS108-treated rice seedlings stimulated Striga germination less than those of control plants. These results suggest that TIS108 has a potential to be applied in the control of root parasitic weeds germination
