Chlorophenols are highly toxic xenobiotic compounds, normally found in the effluents of many industries. Due to the high toxicity of these compounds, it is difficult to treat effluent streams containing high concentrations of chlorophenols. The aim of this work is to demonstrate the capabilities of an aerobic submerged filter previously characterized in the degradation of phenol and chlorophenols in the treatment of highly toxic di-, tri-, tetra- and penta- chlorophenols mixtures (200 - 800 mgL-1 as total phenols concentration). It is shown that the system is capable of treating up to 600 mgL-1 of total chlorophenols with excellent reduction values, and biodegradation rates (BDRs) between 87 - 97%, and 34 - 157 mgL-1 day-1, respectively (total organic carbon, TOC degradations up to80%). In the case of the 800 mgL-1, a strong inhibition due to the high toxicity of the mixture was observed. The system reduced the influent toxicity (EC50 or toxic units) by 48 - 76%, even when the initial toxicities of the mixtures were in the range of 40 - 358 toxic units (classified as very toxic). The kinetics of the phenol and TOC degradation were characterized through a first order kinetic expression. The values of TPho, TOCo, k1 and k2 are reported for the biodegradation of the total phenols and for the TOC, respectively. A system with powerful capabilities in the treatment ofindustrial streams, contaminated aquifers or accidentally contaminated municipal wastewaters containing high quantities of chlorophenols, is described

The Helium content and age of the Hyades: Constraints from five binary systems and Hipparcos parallaxes

We compare the accurate empirical mass-luminosity (M-L) relation based on five Hyades binary systems to predictions of stellar models calculated with various input parameters (helium, metallicity, age) or physics (mixing-length ratio, model atmosphere, equation of state, microscopic diffusion). Models based on a helium content Ysim0.28 inferred from the dydz enrichment law are more than 3sigma beyond the observations, suggesting that the initial helium abundance is lower than expected from its supersolar metallicity. With the photometric metallicity (FeH=0.144pm0.013 dex, Grenon (2000) we derive Y=0.255\pm0.009. Because of the (Y,FeH) degeneracy in the M-L plane, the uncertainty grows to Delta Y=0.013 if the metallicity from spectroscopy is adopted (FeH=0.14pm0.05 dex, Cayrel de Strobel et al 1997). We use these results to discuss the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram of the Hyades, in the (Mv,B-V) plane, based on the very precise Hipparcos dynamical parallaxes. Present models fit the tight observed sequence very well except at low temperatures. In the low mass region of the HR diagram sensitive to the mixing-length parameter (aMLT), the slope of the main sequence (MS) suggests that aMLT could decrease from a solar (or even supersolar) value at higher mass to subsolar values at low mass, which is also supported by the modeling of the vB22 M-L relation. We find that the discrepancy at low temperatures (B-V\gtrsim 1.2) remains, even if an improved equation of state or better model atmospheres are used. Finally, we discuss the positions of the stars at turn-off in the light of their observed rotation rates and we deduce that the maximum age of the Hyades predicted by the present models is sim650 Myr.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Get PDF
Background:We conducted a phase 1 trial in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer by injecting 0.5 ml of the CK2-antagonist CIGB-300 in two different sites on tumours to assess tumour uptake, safety, pharmacodynamic activity and identify the recommended dose. Methods:Fourteen patients were treated with intralesional injections containing 35 or 70 mg of CIGB-300 in three alternate cycles of three consecutive days each before standard chemoradiotherapy. Tumour uptake was determined using 99 Tc-radiolabelled peptide. In situ B23/nucleophosmin was determined by immunohistochemistry. Results:Maximum tumour uptake for CIGB-300 70-mg dose was significantly higher than the one observed for 35 mg: 16.1±8.9 vs 31.3±12.9 mg (P=0.01). Both, AUC 24h and biological half-life were also significantly higher using 70 mg of CIGB-300 (P<0.001). Unincorporated CIGB-300 diffused rapidly to blood and was mainly distributed towards kidneys, and marginally in liver, lungs, heart and spleen. There was no DLT and moderate allergic-like reactions were the most common systemic side effect with strong correlation between unincorporated CIGB-300 and histamine levels in blood. CIGB-300, 70 mg, downregulated B23/nucleophosmin (P=0.03) in tumour specimens. Conclusion:Intralesional injections of 70 mg CIGB-300 in two sites (0.5 ml per injection) and this treatment plan are recommended to be evaluated in phase 2 studies.Fil: Sarduy, M. Search for low-mass WIMPs in a 0.6 kg day exposure of the DAMIC experiment at SNOLAB

    Get PDF
We present results of a dark matter search performed with a 0.6 kg day exposure of the DAMIC experiment at the SNOLAB underground laboratory. We measure the energy spectrum of ionization events in the bulk silicon of charge-coupled devices down to a signal of 60 eV electron equivalent. The data are consistent with radiogenic backgrounds, and constraints on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic-scattering cross section are accordingly placed. A region of parameter space relevant to the potential signal from the CDMS-II Si experiment is excluded using the same target for the first time. This result obtained with a limited exposure demonstrates the potential to explore the low-mass WIMP region (<10 GeV/c2c^{2}) of the upcoming DAMIC100, a 100 g detector currently being installed in SNOLAB.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

Optimizing dialysis dose in the context of frailty: an exploratory study

    Get PDF
Introduction Frailty is a multicausal syndrome characterized by a decrease in strength, resistance and physiological function, which makes the individual vulnerable and dependent, and increases his/her mortality. This syndrome is more prevalent among older individuals, and chronic kidney disease patients, particularly those on dialysis. Dialysis dose is currently standardized for hemodialysis (HD) patients regardless of their age and functional status. However, it has been postulated that the dialysis dose required in older patients, especially frail ones, should be lower, since it could increase their degree of frailty. Then, the purpose of this study was to evaluate if there would be a correlation between the dose of Kt/V and the degree of frailty in a population of adult patients on HD. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study with 82 patients on HD in Barranquilla (Colombia) and Lobos (Argentina) was conducted. Socio-demographic and laboratory data, as well as dialysis doses (Kt/V) were recorded and scales of fragility, physical activity, gait and grip strength were applied. Then these data were correlated by a Spearman’s correlation and a logistic regression. Results CFS, social isolation, physical activity, gait speed, and prehensile strength tests were outside the reference ranges in the studied group. No significant correlation was found between dialysis dose and all the above mentioned functional tests. However, a significant and inverse correlation between physical activity and CFS was documented (score − 1.41 (CI − 2.1 to − 0.7). Conclusion No significant correlation was documented between Kt/V value and different parameters of the frailty status, but this status correlated significantly and inversely with physical activity in this group. Frailty status in hemodialysis patients was significantly higher in older individuals, although young individuals were not exempt from it
