    Neutron scattering measurements of phonons in nickel at elevated temperatures

    Measurements of elastic and inelastic neutron scatterings from elemental nickel were made at 10, 300, 575, 875, and 1275 K. The phonon densities of states (DOSs) were calculated from the inelastic scattering and were fit with Bornā€“von KĆ”rmĆ”n models of the lattice dynamics. With ancillary data on thermal expansion and elastic moduli, we found a small, negative anharmonic contribution to the phonon entropy at high temperature. We used this to place bounds on the magnetic entropy of nickel. A significant broadening of the phonon DOS at elevated temperatures, another indication of anharmonicity, was also measured and quantified

    Jamming Transition In Non-Spherical Particle Systems: Pentagons Versus Disks

    We investigate the jamming transition in a quasi-2D granular material composed of regular pentagons or disks subjected to quasistatic uniaxial compression. We report six major findings based on experiments with monodisperse photoelastic particles with static friction coefficient Ī¼ā‰ˆ1. (1) For both pentagons and disks, the onset of rigidity occurs when the average coordination number of non-rattlers, Znr, reaches 3, and the dependence of Znr on the packing fraction Ļ• changes again when Znr reaches 4. (2) Though the packing fractions Ļ•c1 and Ļ•c2 at these transitions differ from run to run, for both shapes the data from all runs with different initial configurations collapses when plotted as a function of the non-rattler fraction. (3) The averaged values of Ļ•c1 and Ļ•c2 for pentagons are around 1% smaller than those for disks. (4) Both jammed pentagons and disks show Gamma distribution of the Voronoi cell area with same parameters. (5) The jammed pentagons have similar translational order for particle centers but slightly less orientational order for contacting pairs compared to jammed disks. (6) For jammed pentagons, the angle between edges at a face-to-vertex contact point shows a uniform distribution and the size of a cluster connected by face-to-face contacts shows a power-law distribution

    Variations of the amplitudes of oscillation of the Be star Achernar

    We report on finding variations in amplitude of the two main oscillation frequencies found in the Be star Achernar, over a period of 5 years. They were uncovered by analysing photometric data of the star from the SMEI instrument. The two frequencies observed, 0.775 c/d and 0.725 c/d, were analysed in detail and their amplitudes were found to increase and decrease significantly over the 5-year period, with the amplitude of the 0.725 c/d frequency changing by up to a factor of eight. The nature of this event has yet to be properly understood, but the possibility of it being due to the effects of a stellar outburst or a stellar cycle are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, to be published in MNRA

    Asteroseismology of red giants: photometric observations of Arcturus by SMEI

    We present new results on oscillations of the K1.5 III giant Arcturus (alpha Boo), from analysis of just over 2.5 yr of precise photometric observations made by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) on board the Coriolis satellite. A strong mode of oscillation is uncovered by the analysis, having frequency 3.51+/-0.03 micro-Hertz. By fitting its mode peak, we are able offer a highly constrained direct estimate of the damping time (tau = 24+/-1 days). The data also hint at the possible presence of several radial-mode overtones, and maybe some non-radial modes. We are also able to measure the properties of the granulation on the star, with the characteristic timescale for the granulation estimated to be 0.50+/-0.05 days.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

    Amplitude variability in satellite photometry of the non-radially pulsating O9.5V star zeta Oph

    We report a time-series analysis of satellite photometry of the non-radially pulsating Oe star zeta Oph, principally using data from SMEI obtained 2003--2008, but augmented with MOST and WIRE results. Amplitudes of the strongest photometric signals, at 5.18, 2.96, and 2.67/d, each vary independently over the 6-year monitoring period (from ca. 30 to <2 mmag at 5.18/d), on timescales of hundreds of days. Signals at 7.19/d and 5.18/d have persisted (or recurred) for around two decades. Supplementary spectroscopic observations show an H-alpha emission episode in 2006; this coincided with small increases in amplitudes of the three strongest photometric signals.Comment: MNRAS, in pres

    Exploring the Discourses and Identities of One Aspiring Literacy Specialist

    Becoming an effective literacy specialist means developing tools to support studentsā€™ and teachersā€™ reading and writing aspirations. They are thought to be self critical and respectful of their studentsā€™ and colleagues\u27 strengths, however, this is not easy. This case study examined the discourses and identities of a highly reflective white female teacher who was completing studies to become a literacy specialist. Critical discourse analysis was used as a theory and a method to examine the focal participantā€™s language-in-use to learn about how she made sense of her world, including her work with students and colleagues. This analysis suggested that she was a caring wife, mother, religious person, teacher, aspiring literacy specialist, and she was aware and critical of her privilege as a middle class white woman. Despite this, she drew on deficit-oriented language about helping the ā€œotherā€ in ways that distanced her from students and colleagues. This analysis suggests the need for researchers to continue to develop practices to enable literacy specialists, and all educators, to disrupt their deficit discourses and offer more inclusive and effective pedagogy
