Competitive Intelligence Practices in Small Business: a Social Media Analytics Approach
With the recent advances in the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), a lot of small businesses and micro-enterprises achieve their business goals and reach economic development. While Competitive Intelligence (CI) is the practice of studying competitors and competitive environment, its purpose is to provide actionable intelligence for informative organizational decision making. In this study, we propose a social media analytics approach to understand the CI of the small businesses and micro-enterprises. Three research questions are proposed to further guide the future research. Based on Chen (1996)’s framework, case study will be conducted from micro-enterprises. The work contributes to the CI body of knowledge by introducing advanced text mining techniques and social mediate data into CI analysis in the context of small businesses. Evaluation experiment will be conducted in the future
Further Study On U(1) Gauge Invariance Restoration
To further investigate the applicability of the projection scheme for
eliminating the unphysical divergence due to U(1) gauge invariance
violation, we study the process which possesses
advantages of simplicity and clearness. Our study indicates that the projection
scheme can indeed eliminate the unphysical divergence caused by the
U(1) gauge invariance violation and the scheme can apply to very high energy
region.Comment: Latex, 13 pages, 4 EPS fiure

Hypericin enhances β-lactam antibiotics activity by inhibiting sarA expression in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Bacteremia is a life-threating syndrome often caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Thus, there is an urgent need to develop novel approaches to successfully treat this infection. Staphylococcal accessory regulator A (SarA), a global virulence regulator, plays a critical role in pathogenesis and β-lactam antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus. Hypericin is believed to act as an antibiotic, antidepressant, antiviral and non-specific kinase inhibitor. In the current study, we investigated the impact of hypericin on β-lactam antibiotics susceptibility and mechanism(s) of its activity. We demonstrated that hypericin significantly decreased the minimum inhibitory concentrations of β-lactam antibiotics (e.g., oxacillin, cefazolin and nafcillin), biofilm formation and fibronectin binding in MRSA strain JE2. In addition, hypericin significantly reduced sarA expression, and subsequently decreased mecA, and virulence-related regulators (e.g., agr RNAⅢ) and genes (e.g., fnbA and hla) expression in the studied MRSA strain. Importantly, the in vitro synergistic effect of hypericin with β-lactam antibiotic (e.g., oxacillin) translated into in vivo therapeutic outcome in a murine MRSA bacteremia model. These findings suggest that hypericin plays an important role in abrogation of β-lactam resistance against MRSA through sarA inhibition, and may allow us to repurpose the use of β-lactam antibiotics, which are normally ineffective in the treatment of MRSA infections (e.g., oxacillin)
Quantum speed limit of a single atom in a squeezed optical cavity mode
We theoretically study the quantum speed limit of a single atom trapped in a
Fabry-Perot microresonator. The cavity mode will be squeezed when a driving
laser is applied to the second-order nonlinear medium, and the effective
Hamiltonian can be obtained under the Bogoliubov squeezing transformation. The
analytical expression of evolved atom state can be obtained by using the
non-Hermitian Schr\"{o}dinger equation for the initial excited state, and the
quantum speed limit time coincides very well for both the analytical expression
and the master equation method. From the perspective of quantum speed limit, it
is more conducive to accelerate the evolution of the quantum state for the
large detuning, strong driving and coupling strength. For the initial
superposition state case, the form of initial state has more influence on the
evolution speed. The quantum speed limit time is not only dependent on the
system parameters but also determined by the initial state
Photon blockade with a trapped -type three-level atom in asymmetrical cavity
We propose a scheme to manipulate strong and nonreciprocal photon blockades
in asymmetrical Fabry-Perot cavity with a -type three-level atom.
Utilizing the mechanisms of both conventional and unconventional blockade, the
strong photon blockade is achieved by the anharmonic eigenenergy spectrum
brought by -type atom and the destructive quantum interference effect
induced by a microwave field. By optimizing the system parameters, the
manipulation of strong photon blockade over a wide range of cavity detuning can
be realized. Using spatial symmetry breaking introduced by the asymmetry of
cavity, the direction-dependent nonreciprocal photon blockade can be achieved,
and the nonreciprocity can reach the maximum at optimal cavity detuning. In
particular, manipulating the occurring position of nonreciprocal photon
blockade can be implemented by simply adjusting the cavity detuning. Our scheme
provides feasible access for generating high-quality nonreciprocal
single-photon sources
Risk factors of distant brain failure for patients with newly diagnosed brain metastases treated with stereotactic radiotherapy alone

Abstract

Objective

To explore the risk factors of distant brain failure (DBF) for patients with brain metastasis (BM) who were treated with stereotactic radiotherapy alone and to group the patients on the basis of their risk levels.

Methods and Materials

We retrospectively analyzed 132 newly diagnosed BM patients who were treated with stereotactic radiotherapy alone from May 2000 to April 2010. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed for univariate and multivariate analyses.

Results

The 1-year incidence rate of DBF was 44.7%, and the median DBF time (MDBFT) was 18 months. In multivariate analysis, the risk factors of DBF were the number of BMs greater than 1 (p = 0.041), uncontrolled extracranial disease (p = 0.005), interval time (IT) of less than 60 months between the diagnosis of primary tumor and BM (p = 0.024), and total volume of BM was greater than 6 cc (p = 0.049). Each risk factor was assigned 1 score. The median survival times for the patients with scores of 0-1, 2-3, and 4 were 31, 12, and 10 months, respectively, and the corresponding MDBFTs were not reached, 13, and 3 months, respectively, (p < 0.001). The crude DBF incidence rates in patients with scores of 0-1, 2-3, and 4 were 14.8%, 50.0%, and 76.9%, respectively, (p < 0.001).

Conclusions

The patients with scores of 0-1 had a lower risk of DBF than the patients with higher scores did, and it may be reasonable to treat these patients with SRS alone and resort to whole-brain radiation therapy only for salvage. The patients with a score of 4 had the highest risk of developing DBF after stereotactic radiotherapy alone, these patients may be candidates for initial whole-brain radiation therapy or clinical trials. The patients with a score of 2-3 had a moderate risk of developing DBF, SRT alone combined with close clinical monitoring would be the optimal treatment regimen for such patients, and for those patients with difficulties in receiving close clinical mornitoring, SRT combined with WBRT will be more suitable.</p

Disruption of the GABAergic system contributes to the development of perioperative neurocognitive disorders after anesthesia and surgery in aged mice
Aims:
Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) are associated with cognitive impairment in the preoperative or postoperative period, and neuroinflammation is thought to be the most important mechanisms especially during the postoperative period. The GABAergic system is easily disrupted by neuroinflammation. This study investigated the impact of the GABAergic system on PND after anesthesia and surgery.
Methods:
An animal model of laparotomy with inhalation anesthesia in 16-month old mice was addressed. Effects of the GABAergic system were assessed using biochemical analysis. Pharmacological blocking of α5GABAARs or P38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) was applied to investigate the effect of the GABAergic system.
Results:
After laparotomy, the hippocampus-dependent memory and long-term potentiation were impaired, the levels of IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α upregulated in the hippocampus, the concentration of GABA decreased, and the protein levels of the surface α5GABAARs up-regulated. Pharmacological blocking of α5GABAARs with L655,708 alleviated laparotomy induced cognitive deficits. A further study found that the P38 MAPK signaling pathway was involved and pharmacological blocking with SB203,580 alleviated memory dysfunction.
Conclusions:
Anesthesia and surgery caused neuroinflammation in the hippocampus, which consequently disrupted the GABAergic system, increased the expressions of surface α5GABAARs especially through the P38 MAPK signaling pathway, and eventually led to hippocampus-dependent memory dysfunctions
Associations between impulsivity, aggression, and suicide in Chinese college students
BACKGROUND: Although there are accumulating data regarding the epidemiology of suicide in China, there are meager data on suicidal ideation and attempts among college students. Interestingly, elevated impulsivity is thought to facilitate the transition from suicidal thoughts to suicidal behavior. Therefore, the objective of this research was to identify the associations between suicide and the personality factors of impulsivity and aggression. METHODS: This study’s sampling method employed stratified random cluster sampling. A multi-stage stratified sampling procedure was used to select participants (n = 5,245). We conducted structured interviews regarding a range of socio-demographic characteristics and suicidal morbidity. The Patient Health Questionnaire depression module (PHQ-9) was used to acquire the information about thoughts of being better off dead or hurting themselves in some ways during the past two weeks. The impulsivity symptoms in this study were assessed with the BIS-11-CH (i.e., the Chinese version of the BIS-11), and the Aggressive symptoms were assessed with the BAQ. The statistical package for social science (SPSS) v.13.0 program (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used for statistical analysis. Socio-demographic variables such as ethnic and gender were compared between groups, through the use of χ(2) tests. The nonparametric test (k Independent Sample test, Kruskal-Wallis H) was performed to determine differences between the personality factors of impulsivity and aggression and suicide. RESULTS: In total, 9.1% (n = 479) of the 5,245 students reported they have ever thought about committing suicide; and 1% (n = 51) reported a history of attempted suicide (attempters). The analyses detected significant differences in scores on cognitive impulsivity (p < 0.01), when comparing individuals who only had suicidal ideation and individuals who had attempted suicide. Moreover, significant differences were found between ideators only and attempters on scores of self-oriented attack (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Suicidal ideation is prevalent among Chinese university students. Students with high aggression scores were more susceptible to committing suicide. Scores on self-oriented attack and cognitive impulsivity may be important factors for differentially predicting suicide ideation and suicide attempts
BaTiO3 piezoelectric microfiber composites for mechanical energy harvesting
Conference Name:2011 International Symposium on Advanced Packaging Materials, APM 2011. Conference Address: Xiamen, China. Time:October 25, 2011 - October 28, 2011.In this paper, green microfibers of barium titanate precursor were prepared by the combination of Sol-Gel processing and Gel-spinning technique. The piezoelectric microfibers of ceramic BaTiO3 were sintered, with diameter of 15μm and length of 20mm, respectively. Interdigitated electrodes were printed on an epoxy resin substrate. BaTiO3 microfibers were then aligned on the interdigitated electrodes and covered with the solution of epoxy resin, so as to obtain Inter-Digitated Electrodes Piezoelectric Fiber/polymer Composites, IDEPFC. The periodic output voltages with maximum value of 0.86V were obtained under harmonic excitation, by using a finger to apply a dynamic load on the top of the IDEPFC. ? 2011 IEEE
