Asymptotic Matrix Theory of Bragg Fibers
We developed a matrix theory that applies to any cylindrically symmetric fiber surrounded with Bragg cladding, which includes both the Bragg fibers and the recently proposed dielectric coaxial fibers. In this formalism,an arbitrary number of inner dielectric layers are treated exactly and the outside cladding structure is approximated in the asymptotic limit. An estimate of the radiation loss of such fibers is given. We compare the asymptotic results with those obtained from the finite difference time domain (FDTD) calculations and find excellent agreement between the two approaches
Organization and Strategy of Farmer Specialized Cooperatives in China
A description and analysis of Chinaâs Farmer Specialized Cooperatives is presented. Data is presented regarding the historical development of farmer cooperatives in China, the membership composition of a sample of 66 farmer cooperatives in the Zhejiang province, and the various attributes (governance, quality control system, and strategy) of a watermelon cooperative in this province. Many cooperatives are being transformed in organizations with a market orientation. These cooperatives exhibit substantial heterogeneity, in terms of farmers being member and skewness in the distribution of control rights. Human asset specificity in terms of establishing and maintaining relations and access to markets seems to be more important than physical asset specificity in accounting for governance structure choice in the current institutional setting
Rapidly variable Fe K line in NGC 4051
We present a detailed analysis on the variability of the Fe K emission line
in NGC 4051 using ASCA data. Through simple Gaussian line fits, we find not
only obvious Fe K line variability with no significant difference in the X-ray
continuum flux between two ASCA observations which were separated by 440
days, but also rapid variability of Fe K line on time scales s
within the second observation. During the second observation, the line is
strong (EW = 733 eV) and broad (
keV) when the source is brightest, and become weaker (EW = 165
eV) and narrower ( keV) whilst the source is weakest. The
equivalent width of Fe K line correlates positively with the continuum flux,

Generation of photovoltage in graphene on a femtosecond time scale through efficient carrier heating
Graphene is a promising material for ultrafast and broadband photodetection.
Earlier studies addressed the general operation of graphene-based
photo-thermoelectric devices, and the switching speed, which is limited by the
charge carrier cooling time, on the order of picoseconds. However, the
generation of the photovoltage could occur at a much faster time scale, as it
is associated with the carrier heating time. Here, we measure the photovoltage
generation time and find it to be faster than 50 femtoseconds. As a
proof-of-principle application of this ultrafast photodetector, we use graphene
to directly measure, electrically, the pulse duration of a sub-50 femtosecond
laser pulse. The observation that carrier heating is ultrafast suggests that
energy from absorbed photons can be efficiently transferred to carrier heat. To
study this, we examine the spectral response and find a constant spectral
responsivity between 500 and 1500 nm. This is consistent with efficient
electron heating. These results are promising for ultrafast femtosecond and
broadband photodetector applications.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
The associations of economic growth and anaemia for school-aged children in China
Economic growth has brought improvements in many areas of child health, but its effects on anaemia among school-aged children remain unknown. However, this is important because iron deficiency anaemia is common and is the main cause of disability-adjusted life years for school-aged children. In this study, we included 429,222 Chinese children aged 7â17 years from five consecutive national cross-sectional surveys during 1995â2014. Using altitude-adjusted haemoglobin concentration measured from capillary blood samples, we defined anaemia status according to World Health Organization's recommendation. We used logistic regressions weighted by provincial population to examine the association between provincial gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and anaemia, adjusting for sex, age, urbanârural location, regional socio-economic status (SES), fixed effect of province, and clustering of schools. We used generalised additive mixed models to evaluate a potentially non-linear relationship. For each 100% growth in GDP per capita, there was a 40% (odds ratio [OR] = 0.60; 95% confidence interval [CI; 0.56, 0.65]) reduction in anaemia. However, the association was weaker for girls and in cities with a lower SES. The association was weaker across 2005â2014 (OR = 0.75, 95% CI [0.62, 0.90]) compared with 1995â2005 (OR = 0.52; 95% CI [0.44, 0.61]), reflecting a weaker association when GDP per capita reaches around $2,000. The results were similar for moderate-to-severe anaemia. We concluded that economic growth has been associated with reductions in anaemia among school-aged children in China but with fewer benefits for girls and those in poorer settings. Further economic development in China is unlikely to bring similar reductions in anaemia, suggesting that additional population level and targeted interventions will be needed
Large and robust electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field using an ultrathin CoFeB/MgO injector
We demonstrate a large electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic
field thanks to an ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB contact of a few
atomic planes (1.2 nm). The spin-polarization of electrons injected into GaAs
was examined by the circular polarization of electroluminescence from a Spin
Light Emitting Diode with embedded InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The
electroluminescence polarization as a function of the magnetic field closely
traces the out-of-plane magnetization of the CoFeB/MgO injector. A circular
polarization degree of the emitted light as large as 20% at 25 K is achieved at
zero magnetic field. Moreover the electroluminescence circular polarization is
