    Physical Properties and Biocompatibility of a Core-Sheath Structure Composite Scaffold for Bone Tissue Engineering In Vitro

    Scaffolds play a critical role in the practical realization of bone tissue engineering. The purpose of this study was to assess whether a core-sheath structure composite scaffold possesses admirable physical properties and biocompatibility in vitro. A novel scaffold composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/β-tricalcium phosphate (PLGA/β-TCP) skeleton wrapped with Type I collagen via low-temperature deposition manufacturing (LDM) was prepared, and bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were used to evaluate cell behavior on the scaffold. PLGA/β-TCP skeleton was chosen as the control group. Physical properties were evaluated by pority ratio, compressive strength, and Young's modulus. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to study morphology of cells. Hydrophilicity was evaluated by water absorption ratio. Cell proliferation was tested by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay (MTT). Osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs was evaluated by alkaline phosphates activity (ALP). The results indicated that physical properties of the novel scaffold were as good as those of the control group, hydrophilicity was observably better (P < 0.01) than that of control group, and abilities of proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs on novel scaffold were significantly greater (P < 0.05) than those of control group, which suggests that the novel scaffold possesses preferable characteristics and have high value in bone tissue engineering

    Rapid detection of sacbrood virus (SBV) by one-step reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Sacbrood virus </it>(SBV) primarily infects honeybee broods, and in order to deal with the problem cost effective detection methods are required.</p> <p>Findings</p> <p>A one-step reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) assay was developed for the rapid identification of SBV. The data demonstrated that, in a simple water bath, SBV RNA could be detected as early as 20 min at 65°C, and a positive amplification reaction was visible to the naked eye due to a color change brought on by the addition of nucleic acid stain SYBR Green.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The current study presents a method for the rapid and simple detection of SBV by RT-LAMP with high sensitivity and analytic specificity.</p

    Cavity magnomechanics: from classical to quantum

    Hybrid quantum systems based on magnons in magnetic materials have made significant progress in the past decade. They are built based on the couplings of magnons with microwave photons, optical photons, vibration phonons, and superconducting qubits. In particular, the interactions among magnons, microwave cavity photons, and vibration phonons form the system of cavity magnomechanics (CMM), which lies in the interdisciplinary field of cavity QED, magnonics, quantum optics, and quantum information. Here, we review the experimental and theoretical progress of this emerging field. We first introduce the underlying theories of the magnomechanical coupling, and then some representative classical phenomena that have been experimentally observed, including magnomechanically induced transparency, magnomechanical dynamical backactions, magnon-phonon cross-Kerr nonlinearity, etc. We also discuss a number of theoretical proposals, which show the potential of the CMM system for preparing different kinds of quantum states of magnons, phonons, and photons, and hybrid systems combining magnomechanics and optomechanics and relevant quantum protocols based on them. Finally, we summarize this review and provide an outlook for the future research directions in this field.Comment: Review article, 42 pages, 16 figure

    QTL analysis of production traits on SSC3 in a Large White×Meishan pig resource family

    In order to locate the genetic regions that are responsible for economically important traits, a resource population was established by crossing Large White boars and Meishan sows. Phenotypic data of a total of 287 F2 offspring were collected from 1998 to 2000 and QTL analysis conducted using nine microsatellites on Sus scrofa chromosome 3 (SSC3). Least square regression interval mapping revealed two significant QTL effects on dressing percentage and moisture in m. longissimus dorsi, respectively. They were located at 136 cM and 22 cM in the genetic linkage map, near the marker Sw349 and Swr1637, respectively. QTL for dressing percentage had an additive effect of -1.035 ± 0.296% and a dominance effect of 1.056 ± 0.481%, and the explained phenotypic variance was 15.9%. The additive and dominance effects of QTL for moisture in m. longissimus dorsi were -0.025 ± 0.076% and 0.365 ± 0.101%, respectively, indicating that this QTL seemed to be significantly dominant in action. The present study confirms previously identified QTL and provides an important step in the search for the actual major genes involved in the traits of economic interest.     The prognostic value of selective neck dissection in early-stage major salivary gland carcinoma: a population-based analysis

    ObjectiveThis population-based study aims to assess the survival benefits of selective neck dissection (SND) compared to neck observation in patients with T1/T2N0M0 major salivary gland malignancy (MSGC).MethodsWe conducted a retrospective review of T1/T2N0M0 MSGC patients who underwent primary tumor surgical extirpation with or without elective neck dissection in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database (SEER) from 2004-2015. The impact of SND and clinical variables on overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) was evaluated using Univariate and Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were generated, and survival rates were assessed via the log-rank test.ResultsOf 3778 post-operative T1-T2N0M0 MSGC patients, 2305 underwent elective neck dissection, while 1473 did not. Median follow-up was 106 months. Univariate and Multivariate analysis identified SND as a prognostic factor for OS in all the study population. After stratified analysis, we found that in the poorly high-grade (differentiated and undifferentiated) patients, the survival showed a significant OS and DSS benefit after receiving SND compared with the neck observations [HR for OS (95%CI): 0.571(0.446-0.731), P&lt;0.001] and [HR for DSS (95%CI): 0.564(0.385-0.826), P=0.003], other than in the well differentiated or moderately differentiated subgroup. Especially, when the pathological is squamous cell carcinoma, the results show that the people underwent SND had better prognosis, not only in OS [HR (95%CI): 0.532(0.322-0.876), P=0.013], but also in DSS [HR (95%CI): 0.330(0.136-0.797), P=0.014]. The multivariate analysis also yielded encouraging results, compared with neck observation, receiving SND bought about a significant independent OS (adjusted HR, 0.555; 95% CI, 0.328-0.941; P=0.029) and DSS (adjusted HR, 0.349; 95% CI, 0.142-0.858; P=0.022) advantage in high grade squamous cell carcinoma MSGC patients. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves also demonstrated that adjusted SND still had significantly better OS(P=0.029) and DSS(P=0.022) than the observation group in patients with high-grade squamous cell carcinoma of MSGC.ConclusionPoorly differentiated and undifferentiated T1/T2N0M0 major salivary gland malignancy treated with selective neck dissection demonstrated superior survival compared to neck observation, especially in the pathological subtype of squamous cell carcinoma. These findings suggest the potential benefits of multimodal therapy for appropriately selected patients, emphasizing significant clinical implications
