    Safety profile of intravenous digoxin in Chinese patients with acute heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: a small-scale prospective cohort study

    Background: Adverse effects of intravenous digoxin vary from patients and disease status, which should be closely monitored.Aims: To explore the safety profile of intravenous digoxin in acute heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) among Chinese patients.Methods: A clinical prospective, single-center, single-arm, open-label exploratory clinical trial was performed in patients with acute HFrEF at Wuhan Asia Heart Hospital. A fixed dose of 0.5 mg digoxin was used intravenously once per day for 3 days. The normalized dosage of digoxin (NDD), toxic serum digoxin concentration (SDC), and adverse reactions of intravenous digoxin were recorded.Results: A total of 40 patients were recruited in the study. The SDC increased from 1.03 ± 0.34 ng/mL to 1.95 ± 0.52 ng/mL during treatment. 50% (20/40) patients reached a toxic SDC of 2.0 ng/mL, and toxic effects were seen in 30% (12/40) patients. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min [HR: 5.269; 95% CI: 1.905–14.575, p = 0.001], NDD ≥7 μg/kg [HR: 3.028; 95% CI: 1.119–8.194, p = 0.029], and ischemic cardiomyopathy [HR: 2.658; 95% CI: 1.025–6.894, p = 0.044] were independent risk factors for toxic SDC. Toxic SDC was effectively identified [area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve = 0.85, p < 0.001] using this model, and patients would have a higher risk of toxicity with more risk factors.Conclusion: Intravenous digoxin of 0.5 mg was safe and effective for initial dose but not suitable for maintenance treatment in Chinese patients with acute HFrEF. Patients who had lower eGFR, received higher NDD, and had ischemic cardiomyopathy should be closely monitored to avoid digoxin toxicity

    Normative Analysis of Individual Brain Differences Based on a Population MRI-Based Atlas of Cynomolgus Macaques

    The developmental trajectory of the primate brain varies substantially with aging across subjects. However, this ubiquitous variability between individuals in brain structure is difficult to quantify and has thus essentially been ignored. Based on a large-scale structural magnetic resonance imaging dataset acquired from 162 cynomolgus macaques, we create a species-specific 3D template atlas of the macaque brain, and deploy normative modeling to characterize individual variations of cortical thickness (CT) and regional gray matter volume (GMV). We observed an overall decrease in total GMV and mean CT, and an increase in white matter volume from juvenile to early adult. Specifically, CT and regional GMV were greater in prefrontal and temporal cortices relative to early unimodal areas. Age-dependent trajectories of thickness and volume for each cortical region revealed an increase in the medial temporal lobe, and decreases in all other regions. A low percentage of highly individualized deviations of CT and GMV were identified (0.0021%, 0.0043%, respectively, P \u3c 0.05, false discovery rate [FDR]-corrected). Our approach provides a natural framework to parse individual neuroanatomical differences for use as a reference standard in macaque brain research, potentially enabling inferences regarding the degree to which behavioral or symptomatic variables map onto brain structure in future disease studies

    Software for the frontiers of quantum chemistry:An overview of developments in the Q-Chem 5 package

    This article summarizes technical advances contained in the fifth major release of the Q-Chem quantum chemistry program package, covering developments since 2015. A comprehensive library of exchange–correlation functionals, along with a suite of correlated many-body methods, continues to be a hallmark of the Q-Chem software. The many-body methods include novel variants of both coupled-cluster and configuration-interaction approaches along with methods based on the algebraic diagrammatic construction and variational reduced density-matrix methods. Methods highlighted in Q-Chem 5 include a suite of tools for modeling core-level spectroscopy, methods for describing metastable resonances, methods for computing vibronic spectra, the nuclear–electronic orbital method, and several different energy decomposition analysis techniques. High-performance capabilities including multithreaded parallelism and support for calculations on graphics processing units are described. Q-Chem boasts a community of well over 100 active academic developers, and the continuing evolution of the software is supported by an “open teamware” model and an increasingly modular design

    Income Quality and Organic Food Purchase Intention: The Chain Mediating Role of Environmental Value, Perceived Consumer Effectiveness

    Concerns about income inequality and environmental pollution have been important aspects of achieving sustainable development goals. Promotion and use of organic food is one important way to reduce resource consumption and waste. In this study, the structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze 450 questionnaire data, and the environmental values and perceived consumer effectiveness were used as mediating variables to explore the influence mechanism of income quality on the organic food purchase intention. An extended Value—Attitude—Behavior (VAB) theory was used as the research framework, and the results showed that: (1) income quality had a significant positive effect on environmental values, perceived consumer effectiveness, and organic food purchase intention; (2) perceived consumer effectiveness had a significant positive effect on organic food purchase intention and played a partial mediating role; and (3) environmental values and perceived consumer effectiveness played a chain mediating role between income quality and organic food purchase intention

    Pull the Emotional Trigger or the Rational String? A Multi-Group Analysis of Organic Food Consumption

    The organic food industry in China has been developing fast with the increasing consumer demand for healthier, safer, and more nutritious foods since the epidemic outbreak. It is of great significance to understand the psychological preference of consumers for organic food and adjust the marketing strategy accordingly. In this study, we adopted the multi-group structural equation model (SEM) to analyze 571 questionnaire data and explored the effects of consumers’ perception on the sensory appeal of organic food, perception on promotional stimulation, positive emotion, and perceived social value on the purchase intention of organic food. Based on the Stimulus–Organism–Response (S-O-R) model, this study divides the route affecting organic consumption behavior into the rational route and emotional route. It was proved that the emotional route (positive emotion) has a greater impact on the purchase intention of organic food than the rational route (perceived social value). In addition, there are different purchase intentions among different product types. Specifically, compared with organic tea, positive emotion has a greater effect on the purchase intention for organic rice. This study provides an important reference for the organic food-marketing strategy of enterprises

    A Study on the Preparation of Microbial and Nonstarch Polysaccharide Enzyme Synergistic Fermented Maize Cob Feed and Its Feeding Efficiency in Finishing Pigs

    1000 g maize cob mixed material was synergistically fermented by adding 2.5% composite probiotics and 0.06-0.08% NSP (nonstarch polysaccharide) enzyme to prepare fermented feed, and its effectiveness as feed for fattening pigs was investigated. The results showed that the appearance, texture, and nutrient quality of maize cobs significantly improved after fermentation, the total number of bacteria was 4.5×1010 CFU/g, and the protein content was 7.1%. Compared to the control group, the pigs in the 6% fermented maize cob feed experimental group showed significantly increased daily feed intake, daily weight gain, and nutrient digestion rate (p<0.05) and reduced feed conversion ratio (p<0.05). Most indicators including slaughter performance and meat quality significantly improved. In addition, beneficial bacteria including Lactobacillus in the intestines of the finishing pigs significantly increased, and pathogenic bacteria including Escherichia coli in the intestines and feces were found to be significantly reduced (p<0.05). The intestinal crypt depth, VH/CD ratio, and ileal mucosal immunity of the finishing pigs also significantly improved (p<0.05). The cytokine content and gene expression of sIgA, IL-8, and TNF-α were found to be significantly increased (p<0.05). It could be concluded that the addition of 6% fermented maize cob feed to the diets of finishing pigs could promote their growth, improve their production performance and slaughter performance meat quality, and enhance their intestinal microecological balance and immunity

    A Dynamic State-of-Charge Estimation Method for Electric Vehicle Lithium-Ion Batteries

    With the increasing environmental concerns, plug-in electric vehicles will eventually become the main transportation tools in future smart cities. As a key component and the main power source, lithium-ion batteries have been an important object of research studies. In order to efficiently control electric vehicle powertrains, the state of charge (SOC) of lithium-ion batteries must be accurately estimated by the battery management system. This paper aims to provide a more accurate dynamic SOC estimation method for lithium-ion batteries. A dynamic Thevenin model with variable parameters affected by the temperature and SOC is established to model the battery. An unscented Kalman particle filter (UPF) algorithm is proposed based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm and the particle filter (PF) algorithm to generate nonlinear particle filter according to the advantages and disadvantages of various commonly used filtering algorithms. The simulation results show that the unscented Kalman particle filter algorithm based on the dynamic Thevenin model can predict the SOC in real time and it also has strong robustness against noises

    Protective Role of L-3-n-Butylphthalide in Cognitive Function and Dysthymic Disorders in Mouse With Chronic Epilepsy

    Epilepsy is a common neurological disease with recurrent seizures and neurobehavioral comorbidities, including cognitive impairment and psychiatric disorders. Recent studies suggest that L-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP), an extract from the seeds of Apium graveolens Linn. (Chinese celery), ameliorates cognitive dysfunction in ischemia and/or Alzheimer’s disease animal models. However, little is known about the role of NBP in epilepsy and the associated comorbidities. Here, using a pilocarpine-induced chronic epileptic mouse model, we found that NBP supplement not only alleviated seizure severity and abnormal electroencephalogram, but also rescued cognitive and emotional impairments in these epileptic mice. The possible underlying mechanisms may be associated with the protective role of NBP in reducing neuronal loss and in restoring the expression of neural synaptic proteins such as postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD95) and glutamic acid decarboxylase 65/67 (GAD65/67). In addition, NBP treatment increased the transcription of neuroprotective factors, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and Klotho. These findings suggest that NBP treatment may be a potential strategy for ameliorating epileptogenesis and the comorbidities of cognitive and psychological impairments
