    Thermoelectric power of hot carriers in the nonequilibrium-statistical- operator approach

    The thermoelectric power of charge carriers heated under a strong applied electric field in semiconductors is obtained by use of the nonequilibrium- statistical-operator (NSO) method. The balance equations are derived in terms of the NSO density matrix and the force-force correlation functions which can easily be calculated for a system with electron-impurity and electron-phonon interactions. A numerical study has been performed for hole-doped Ge. It is shown that the hot-electron thermoelectric power is sensitively affected by the applied electric field and that its sign is reversed at higher electric fields. © 1995 The American Physical Society.published_or_final_versio

    Macroscopic theory of giant magnetoresistance in magnetic granular metals

    A macroscopic theory of giant magnetoresistance in granular magnetic materials is developed to improve on that of Rubinstein [Phys. Rev. B 50, 3830 (1994)]. By using a self-consistent method and introducing a useful parametrization, we show the magnetotransport in granular systems to be between those for currents in the plane of layers and currents perpendicular to the plane of the layers in multilayers. The theoretical result in the local limit is found to be in agreement with the observed singular dependence of the giant magnetoresistance on annealing temperature.published_or_final_versio

    Osteology of Klamelisaurus gobiensis (Dinosauria, Eusauropoda) and the evolutionary history of Middle–Late Jurassic Chinese sauropods

    Fossil-rich deposits from the Middle and Late Jurassic of China have yielded a diverse array of sauropod dinosaurs, including numerous species referred to Mamenchisaurus and Omeisaurus. Despite an abundance of fossils and a proliferation of taxa, the anatomy of Middle–Late Jurassic Chinese sauropods remains poorly documented. Here, we comprehensively redescribe and illustrate Klamelisaurus gobiensis from the Middle–Late Jurassic Shishugou Formation of northwest China. Phylogenetic analyses conducted under parsimony and time-calibrated Bayesian optimality criteria consistently recover Klamelisaurus as a member of a predominantly Chinese radiation of exceptionally long-necked eusauropods that includes Mamenchisaurus spp., Chuanjiesaurus, Qijianglong and Wamweracaudia. In most analyses, this lineage also includes Euhelopus, reviving a ‘traditional’ Euhelopodidae and calling into question the macronarian affinities of Euhelopus. Klamelisaurus shares several features with Euhelopus that are unique to a subset of East Asian taxa or rare among sauropods, including a convex ventral margin of the prezygodiapophyseal lamina in middle–posterior cervical vertebrae, a ventrally bifurcated postzygodiapophyseal lamina in posterior cervical vertebrae, and development of a rugose projection extending anteriorly from the epipophysis into the spinodiapophyseal fossa in most cervical vertebrae. Anatomical comparisons of the cervical vertebrae of Klamelisaurus to several other sauropodomorphs and insights from myological studies of extant archosaurs strongly suggest that this latter structure, often considered part of an epipophyseal-prezygapophyseal lamina, is an epaxial muscle scar that is distinct from pneumatic structures of the lateral surface of the neural spine. The phylogenetic and comparative anatomical data presented here provide a foundation for future revision of the taxonomy and systematics of sauropods from the Junggar and Sichuan basins

    Experimental and theoretical methods for evaluating ash properties of pine and El Cerrejon coal used in co-firing

    There has been an increase in the use of biomass for power generation by means of co-firing with coal as well as by the combustion of 100% biomass. Despite the advantages of biomass in reducing carbon emissions from the electricity sector, the co-firing of high percentages of biomass can potentially aggravate ash related problems in the boiler. In order to develop mitigation strategies for the formation of deposits, an understanding of the ash behaviour during the combustion of high percentages of biomass is required. In this work, ash samples from El Cerrejon coal and pine biomass were characterised for their inorganic composition by X-ray fluorescence and wet chemical methods. Relationships between these two methods were found. Furthermore, the melting behaviour of ashes from pure coal, pine, and their blends were studied through ash fusion tests (AFT) and via a method using a simultaneous thermal analyser coupled to mass spectrometer (STA-MS) for the evolved gas analysis. Pine ash has lower slagging potential than El Cerrejon coal ash and results show that for 20:80 and 80:20 pine:coal ash belends the characteristic ash fusion temperatures increase with increasing pine ash content. There is unusually higher slagging potential (lower ash fusion temperatures) at a 50:50 blend ratio. Viscosity models produced sensible results for coal and coal/pine blends, but further refinement is required for modelling the viscosity of pure biomass ash. Thermodynamic modelling of slag formation was undertaken using the FactSage model. This model was successful in predicting the changes of gas, solid and liquid phases during pure pine, coal and co-combustion

    Hominin teeth from the Middle Pleistocene site of Yiyuan, Eastern China

    In 1981-1982, some hominin fossils, including a relatively complete skull and seven isolated teeth, were recovered from the Middle Pleistocene site of Yiyuan in Eastern China. In the present study we provide a detailed metric and morphological comparison of the Yiyuan dental sample in order to characterize better the variability of the human populations that inhabited China during the Middle Pleistocene. Aside from taxonomic and phylogenetic questions, the lack of understanding and/or knowledge about the morphological variability of these populations have caused concern about the human versus non-human nature of some of the hominin dental remains found in East Asia during the Early and the Middle Pleistocene. Thus, our study aims to present a detailed description and comparison of the Yiyuan isolated teeth to 1) discuss and support their human nature and 2) to explore their taxonomic affinities with regard to other penecontemporaneous populations from Asia. Our results clearly differentiate the Yiyuan sample from Pongo specimens and support a human attribution for the Yiyuan material. Our analyses also suggest that the Yiyuan teeth form a morphologically coherent group together with samples from Zhoukoudian, Chaoxian and Hexian. They are different from the more derived specimens from Panxian Dadong, suggesting a pattern of biogeographic isolation and different evolutionary trends between northern and southern China during the Middle Pleistocene. In addition, and despite sharing a common morphological bauplan with Homo erectus sensu stricto (s.s.), the Yiyuan, Zhoukoudian and Hexian teeth are also different from the Indonesian Early Pleistocene samples. In particular, the expression of a highly crenulated or dendritic enamel-dentine surface could be unique to these groups. Our study supports the notion that the taxonomy of the Pleistocene hominins from Asia may have been oversimplified. Future studies should explore the variability of the Asian specimens and reconsider whether all the samples can be attributed to H. erectus s.s

    Platelet count and Interleukin 6 Gene polymorphism in healthy subjects

    BACKGROUND: Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is thought to play important roles in the development of reactive thrombocytosis caused by inflammation by its stimulatory effect on megakaryocytopoiesis. A G/C polymorphism of the IL-6 gene at position -174 has been found to be associated to different transcription rates. Specifically, subjects with the CC genotype showed lower plasma IL-6 levels compared with GC or GG subjects. Given this difference in transcription rates of IL-6 we speculated on different platelet count according to this IL-6 polymorphism. METHODS: The G/C polymorphism of the IL-6 gene at position -174, serum IL-6 concentration and platelet count were prospectively analyzed in 59 (25 women) consecutive healthy subjects. RESULTS: Subjects who were homozygotes for the C allele at position -174 of the IL-6 gene (Sfa NI genotype) showed significantly lower platelet count than carriers of the G allele, despite similar age, sex, body mass index and proportion of smokers (205400 ± 44088 vs 239818 ± 60194, p = 0.047). This was in parallel to differences in peripheral white blood cell count (5807 ± 1671 vs 6867 ± 1192 × 10(9)/ml, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: This is the first description, to our knowledge, of a genetical influence on basal platelet counts, which appears to be partially dependent on a polymorphism of the IL-6 gene, even in the absence of inflammation

    Large introns in relation to alternative splicing and gene evolution: a case study of Drosophila bruno-3

    Background: Alternative splicing (AS) of maturing mRNA can generate structurally and functionally distinct transcripts from the same gene. Recent bioinformatic analyses of available genome databases inferred a positive correlation between intron length and AS. To study the interplay between intron length and AS empirically and in more detail, we analyzed the diversity of alternatively spliced transcripts (ASTs) in the Drosophila RNA-binding Bruno-3 (Bru-3) gene. This gene was known to encode thirteen exons separated by introns of diverse sizes, ranging from 71 to 41,973 nucleotides in D. melanogaster. Although Bru-3's structure is expected to be conducive to AS, only two ASTs of this gene were previously described. Results: Cloning of RT-PCR products of the entire ORF from four species representing three diverged Drosophila lineages provided an evolutionary perspective, high sensitivity, and long-range contiguity of splice choices currently unattainable by high-throughput methods. Consequently, we identified three new exons, a new exon fragment and thirty-three previously unknown ASTs of Bru-3. All exon-skipping events in the gene were mapped to the exons surrounded by introns of at least 800 nucleotides, whereas exons split by introns of less than 250 nucleotides were always spliced contiguously in mRNA. Cases of exon loss and creation during Bru-3 evolution in Drosophila were also localized within large introns. Notably, we identified a true de novo exon gain: exon 8 was created along the lineage of the obscura group from intronic sequence between cryptic splice sites conserved among all Drosophila species surveyed. Exon 8 was included in mature mRNA by the species representing all the major branches of the obscura group. To our knowledge, the origin of exon 8 is the first documented case of exonization of intronic sequence outside vertebrates. Conclusion: We found that large introns can promote AS via exon-skipping and exon turnover during evolution likely due to frequent errors in their removal from maturing mRNA. Large introns could be a reservoir of genetic diversity, because they have a greater number of mutable sites than short introns. Taken together, gene structure can constrain and/or promote gene evolution

    The use of equilibrium thermodynamic models for the prediction of inorganic phase changes in the co-firing of wheat straw with El Cerrejon coal

    The combustion of pulverised coal in power stations results in slagging and fouling in the boiler section and this can be a more severe problem when co-fired with biomass, especially straw. Prediction of the effects of different combination of biomass and coal are helpful to the plant operators. Predictive software gives information about the onset and nature of the slag formed but often the results of these calculations have to be validated. This was undertaken in this work which gave a comparison of ash behaviour for coal (El Cerrejon) and wheat straw blends studied by ash fusion test, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and by using predictive software (FactSage). Ash prepared in the laboratory was also compared with ash produced in a 250 kW pilot-scale test furnace. The FactSage model showed good agreements with XRD data for the presence of inorganic phases with temperature, although it predicted some inorganic phases which are not detected in the XRD, particularly in low temperature ashes. Nevertheless, FactSage gave insight into liquid phase formation, more so than the ash fusion test, since it predicted the beginning of slag formation below the initial deformation temperature seen in the ash fusion test. For the coal, wheat straw and their blends, FactSage always predicted that slag formation is near to completion by the flow temperature observed in the ash fusion test

    Experimental and theoretical investigation of ligand effects on the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles

    ZnO nanoparticles with highly controllable particle sizes(less than 10 nm) were synthesized using organic capping ligands in Zn(Ac)2 ethanolic solution. The molecular structure of the ligands was found to have significant influence on the particle size. The multi-functional molecule tris(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane (THMA) favoured smaller particle distributions compared with ligands possessing long hydrocarbon chains that are more frequently employed. The adsorption of capping ligands on ZnnOn crystal nuclei (where n = 4 or 18 molecular clusters of(0001) ZnO surfaces) was modelled by ab initio methods at the density functional theory (DFT) level. For the molecules examined, chemisorption proceeded via the formation of Zn...O, Zn...N, or Zn...S chemical bonds between the ligands and active Zn2+ sites on ZnO surfaces. The DFT results indicated that THMA binds more strongly to the ZnO surface than other ligands, suggesting that this molecule is very effective at stabilizing ZnO nanoparticle surfaces. This study, therefore, provides new insight into the correlation between the molecular structure of capping ligands and the morphology of metal oxide nanostructures formed in their presence
