Influence of Intrinsic Electronic Properties on Light Transmission through Subwavelength Holes on Gold and MgB2 Thin Films
We show how intrinsic material properties modify light transmission through
subwavelength hole arrays on thin metallic films in the THz regime. We compare
the temperature-dependent transmittance of Au films and MgB films. The
experimental data is consistent with analytical calculations, and is attributed
to the temperature change of the conductivity of both films. The transmission
versus conductivity is interpreted within the open resonator model when taking
the skin depth into consideration. We also show that the efficiency of this
temperature control depends on the ratio of the transmission peak frequency to
the superconducting energy gap in MgB films.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Experimentally Engineering the Edge Termination of Graphene Nanoribbons
The edges of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have attracted much interest due to
their potentially strong influence on GNR electronic and magnetic properties.
Here we report the ability to engineer the microscopic edge termination of high
quality GNRs via hydrogen plasma etching. Using a combination of
high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles
calculations, we have determined the exact atomic structure of plasma-etched
GNR edges and established the chemical nature of terminating functional groups
for zigzag, armchair and chiral edge orientations. We find that the edges of
hydrogen-plasma-etched GNRs are generally flat, free of structural
reconstructions and are terminated by hydrogen atoms with no rehybridization of
the outermost carbon edge atoms. Both zigzag and chiral edges show the presence
of edge states.Comment: 16+9 pages, 3+4 figure
Screening and Optimizing Antimicrobial Peptides by Using SPOT-Synthesis.
Peptide arrays on cellulose are a powerful tool to investigate peptide interactions with a number of different molecules, for examples antibodies, receptors or enzymes. Such peptide arrays can also be used to study interactions with whole cells. In this review, we focus on the interaction of small antimicrobial peptides with bacteria. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can kill multidrug-resistant (MDR) human pathogenic bacteria and therefore could be next generation antibiotics targeting MDR bacteria. We describe the screen and the result of different optimization strategies of peptides cleaved from the membrane. In addition, screening of antibacterial activity of peptides that are tethered to the surface is discussed. Surface-active peptides can be used to protect surfaces from bacterial infections, for example implants
Bounding surface constitutive model for unsaturated soils considering microscopic pore structure and bonding effect
This article presents a bounding surface model for unsaturated soils by using skeleton stress and bonding variable based on microcosmic pore structure as constitutive variables. A Hydraulic hysteresis soil-water characteristic curve model considering deformation and hydraulic hysteresis is combined to achieve hydraulic coupling. The proposed model can capture the change of the inter-particles bonding effect in the deformation process of unsaturated soils and accurately predict the hydraulic mechanical behavior of unsaturated soils under complicated loading paths and wetting-drying cycles. The validity of the proposed model is confirmed by the results of unsaturated isotropic compression tests, wetting-drying cycles tests and unsaturated triaxial shear tests reported in the literature
