    Calculating Single-Channel Permeability and Conductance from Transition Paths

    Permeability and conductance are the major transport properties of membrane channels, quantifying the rate of channel crossing by the solute. It is highly desirable to calculate these quantities in all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. When the solute crossing rate is low, however, direct methods would require prohibitively long simulations, and one thus typically adopts alternative strategies based on the free energy of single solute along the channel. Here we present a new method to calculate the crossing rate by initiating unbiased trajectories in which the solute is released at the free energy barrier. In this method, the total time the solute spends in the barrier region during a channel crossing (transition path) is used to determine the kinetic rate. Our method achieves a significantly higher statistical accuracy than the classical reactive flux method, especially for diffusive barrier crossing. Our test on ion permeation through a carbon nanotube verifies that the method correctly predicts the crossing rate and reproduces the spontaneous crossing events as in long equilibrium simulations. The rigorous and efficient method here will be valuable for quantitatively connecting simulations to experimental measurement of membrane channels

    3D Shape Estimation from 2D Landmarks: A Convex Relaxation Approach

    We investigate the problem of estimating the 3D shape of an object, given a set of 2D landmarks in a single image. To alleviate the reconstruction ambiguity, a widely-used approach is to confine the unknown 3D shape within a shape space built upon existing shapes. While this approach has proven to be successful in various applications, a challenging issue remains, i.e., the joint estimation of shape parameters and camera-pose parameters requires to solve a nonconvex optimization problem. The existing methods often adopt an alternating minimization scheme to locally update the parameters, and consequently the solution is sensitive to initialization. In this paper, we propose a convex formulation to address this problem and develop an efficient algorithm to solve the proposed convex program. We demonstrate the exact recovery property of the proposed method, its merits compared to alternative methods, and the applicability in human pose and car shape estimation.Comment: In Proceedings of CVPR 201

    Child Health and the Income Gradient: Evidence from China

    Though the positive income gradient of child health is well documented in developed countries, evidence from developing countries is rare. Few studies attempt to identify a causal link between family income and child health. Utilizing unique longitudinal data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey, we have found a positive, age-enhancing income gradient of child health, measured by height-for-age z scores. The gradient is robust to alternative specifications and a comprehensive set of controls. Using the fact that the rural tax reform implemented since 2000 created an exogenous variation in family income across regions and over time, we explore a causal explanation for the income gradient, and find that it has a very strong independent causal effect on child health.child health, income gradient, rural tax reform

    Drone Shadow Tracking

    Aerial videos taken by a drone not too far above the surface may contain the drone's shadow projected on the scene. This deteriorates the aesthetic quality of videos. With the presence of other shadows, shadow removal cannot be directly applied, and the shadow of the drone must be tracked. Tracking a drone's shadow in a video is, however, challenging. The varying size, shape, change of orientation and drone altitude pose difficulties. The shadow can also easily disappear over dark areas. However, a shadow has specific properties that can be leveraged, besides its geometric shape. In this paper, we incorporate knowledge of the shadow's physical properties, in the form of shadow detection masks, into a correlation-based tracking algorithm. We capture a test set of aerial videos taken with different settings and compare our results to those of a state-of-the-art tracking algorithm.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Emotional Chatting Machine: Emotional Conversation Generation with Internal and External Memory

    Perception and expression of emotion are key factors to the success of dialogue systems or conversational agents. However, this problem has not been studied in large-scale conversation generation so far. In this paper, we propose Emotional Chatting Machine (ECM) that can generate appropriate responses not only in content (relevant and grammatical) but also in emotion (emotionally consistent). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that addresses the emotion factor in large-scale conversation generation. ECM addresses the factor using three new mechanisms that respectively (1) models the high-level abstraction of emotion expressions by embedding emotion categories, (2) captures the change of implicit internal emotion states, and (3) uses explicit emotion expressions with an external emotion vocabulary.
