The objective of this study is to explore the effects of acupuncture and auricular acupressure in relieving menopausal hot flashes of bilaterally ovariectomized Chinese women. Between May 2006 and March 2008, 46 bilaterally ovariectomized Chinese women were randomized into an acupuncture and auricular acupressure group (n = 21) and a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) group (Tibolone, n = 25). Each patient was given a standard daily log and was required to record the frequency and severity of hot flashes and side effects of the treatment felt daily, from 1 week before the treatment started to the fourth week after the treatment ended. The serum levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), LH and E2 were detected before and after the treatment. After the treatment and the follow-up, both the severity and frequency of hot flashes in the two groups were relieved significantly when compared with pre-treatment (P <  .05). There was no significant difference in the severity of hot flashes between them after treatment (P >  .05), while after the follow-up, the severity of hot flashes in the HRT group was alleviated more. After the treatment and the follow-up, the frequency of menopausal hot flashes in the HRT group was reduced more (P <  .05). After treatment, the levels of FSH decreased significantly and the levels of E2 increased significantly in both groups (P <  .05), and they changed more in the HRT group (P <  .05). Acupuncture and auricular acupressure can be used as alternative treatments to relieve menopausal hot flashes for those bilaterally ovariectomized women who are unable or unwilling to receive HRT

Maternal smoking-induced lung injuries in dams and offspring via inflammatory cytokines

    No full text
Maternal smoking during pregnancy can induce permanent changes in neonatal inflammation, which will result in lifelong implications. An original study of data from GSE96978, composed of 2 subseries (GSE96976 and GSE96977), investigated genome-wide changes in ELT cells, the lungs of mouse dams and their juvenile offspring and focused on finding an in vitro alternative as a human tissue-based replacement for the use of animals. Therefore, the study only analyzed the similarities of GO terms between ELT cells and dams. However, the relationship between differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in dams and offspring was not investigated. The present study aimed to identify the key molecules involved in maternal smoking-induced dam and offspring lung injuries. Data from GSE96977 were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) data sets. In our study, differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in dams and offspring were reanalyzed using the limma package. The results of Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA) showed that the DEGs in the lungs of dams were significantly enriched in immune-related functions and those in the lungs of offspring were enriched in cell growth. Furthermore, a total of 90 DEGs shared in the dam and offspring datasets were screened out. In addition, most of these DEGs were enriched in cytokine and cytokine receptor interaction KEGG pathways. Furthermore, protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis screened out 4 core genes in cluster 1. In addition, the miRNAs related to these core genes were predicted, and mmu-miR-1903 was screened out. Taken together, our data indicate that inflammatory responses may play an important role in maternal smoking induced lung injuries in dams and offspring. Furthermore, mmu-miR-1903 is a potential epigenetic biomarker of lung inflammation in the offspring of dams who smoked during pregnancy. In conclusion, by screening shared differential genes, we only need to detect maternal genes to predict maternal smoking-induced lung injuries in offspring

SPR Sensor Based on a Concave Photonic Crystal Fiber Structure with MoS2/Au Layers

    No full text
We propose a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor based on the concave photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coated with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and Au layers, which can detect the refractive index (RI) of the analyte. The finite element method (FEM) was used to verify our design, and the loss spectra of the fundamental mode are calculated. Compared with the SPR sensor with only a Au layer, the wavelength sensitivity can be improved by from 3700 to 4400 nm/RIU. Our proposed sensor works in near-infrared band and has a wide RI range from 1.19 to 1.40. The influences of the geometrical parameters of PCF and the thicknesses of Au and MoS2 layers on the loss spectra are discussed in detail, and the maximum wavelength sensitivity of 5100 nm/RIU can be achieved. Meanwhile, a high resolution of 1.96 × 10−5 RIU and the largest FOM of 29.143 can be obtained. It is believed that our findings show the sensor’s excellent potential in medical testing, unknown biological detection, environmental monitoring and organic chemical detection

Circularly polarized terahertz wave independently controlled tunable spin-decoupled metasurface

The research and development of multifunctional metasurfaces has attracted much attention, and manipulating multifunctional devices with greater degrees of freedom is a continuing trend. In this study, we propose a tunable multifunctional metasurface with terahertz (THz) frequency and demonstrate it theoretically. By introducing the propagation phase decoupling conjugate response, we realize the independent control of beam deflection(deflection angle is 8.1°), beam splitting(split angle is 16.5°), and vortex beam mode switching under different incident conditions. At the same time, by changing the Fermi level of the Dirac semimetal, the switching between different states under the same incident condition is realized. The results of this study are expected to contribute to promising applications in future for improving the capacity of THz communication systems, independently regulating multi-functional devices

Catalytic active interfacial B–C bonds of boron nanosheet/reduced graphene oxide heterostructures for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

    No full text
© 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The boron doped carbon nanomaterials that include in-plane B–C bonds at the local structure are considered as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, a fundamental understanding about the electrocatalytic activity of out-of-plane B–C bonds remains unclear. Herein, we synthesize a boron nanosheet/reduced graphene oxide (B@rGO) heterostructure, where out-of-plane B–C chemical bonds are formed at the heterointerfaces, greatly improving the ORR activity. As verified by the combined experimental analyses and theoretical calculations, the ORR activity is boosted because the out-of-plane B–C chemical bonds contribute to the cleavage of O–O bond of O2* intermediate. The B@rGO heterostructure composite exhibits much higher ORR activity than those of respective boron and rGO nanosheets as demonstrated by half-wave potential, Tafel slope, electron transfer number, and electrochemical active area, achieving better durability and methanol tolerance than the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. In this context, primary Zn–air battery, using the as-synthesized B@rGO heterostructure composite as metal-free electrocatalyst, delivers high peak power density of 131 mW cm−2 and specific capacity of 639.3 mAh gZn−1. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd11Nsciescopu
