    Measuring Hydrometeors with a Precipitation Microphysical Characteristics Sensor: Calibration and Field Measurements

    Aiming at the simultaneous measurement of the size, shape, and fall velocity of precipitation particles in the natural environment, we present here a new ground-based precipitation microphysical characteristics sensor (PMCS) based on the particle imaging velocimetry technology. The PMCS can capture autocorrelated images of precipitation particles by double-exposure in one frame, by which the size, axis ratio, and fall velocity of precipitation particles can be calculated. The PMCS is calibrated by a series of glass balls with certain diameters under varying light conditions, and a self-adaptive threshold method is proposed. The shape, axis ratio, and fall velocity of raindrops were calculated and discussed based on the field measurement results of PMCS. The typical shape of large raindrop is an oblate ellipsoid, the axis ratio of raindrops decreases linearly with the diameter, the fall velocity of raindrops approaches its asymptote, and the above observed results are in good agreement with the empirical models; the synchronous observation of a PMCS, an OTT PARSIVEL disdrometer, and a rain gauge shows that the PMCS is able to measure the rain intensity, accumulated rainfall, and drop size distribution with high accuracy.     Evaluating the Impacts of Modern Streetcar Tracks on Bicycling Through an Intersection

    Bicycle traffic flow suffers from the impact of tracks at an intersection in which a modern streetcar route is laid. The primary objective of this study involves discussing the impacts of modern streetcar tracks on bicycling through an intersection and developing a quantitative approach to calculate bicycle delay. Field investigations are conducted at eight sites in Nanjing and Shenyang, China. The sites are related to five intersections. Two of the five intersections are designed with a central modern streetcar style of track. Other two intersections operate on a roadside style of track and the last intersection is without tracks. The impact of the differences in bicycle speed are tested at each site based on the observed data. The results show that modern streetcar tracks exert a significant influence on bicycle speed and bicycling behavior and lead to delay, discomfort and unsafe conditions. Furthermore, a model is proposed to predict bicycle delay caused by modern streetcar tracks. The proposed model achieved a relatively accurate prediction. The findings of this study help in adequately understanding the impacts of modern streetcar tracks on bicycling. The results also suggest that longer crossing times should be used in signal design for bicycling at an intersection in which a modern streetcar route is laid

    Space-Time Hybrid Model for Short-Time Travel Speed Prediction

    Short-time traffic speed forecasting is a significant issue for developing Intelligent Transportation Systems applications, and accurate speed forecasting results are necessary inputs for Intelligent Traffic Security Information System (ITSIS) and advanced traffic management systems (ATMS). This paper presents a hybrid model for travel speed based on temporal and spatial characteristics analysis and data fusion. This proposed methodology predicts speed by dividing the data into three parts: a periodic trend estimated by Fourier series, a residual part modeled by the ARIMA model, and the possible events affected by upstream or downstream traffic conditions. The aim of this study is to improve the accuracy of the prediction by modeling time and space variation of speed, and the forecast results could simultaneously reflect the periodic variation of traffic speed and emergencies. This information could provide decision-makers with a basis for developing traffic management measures. To achieve the research objective, one year of speed data was collected in Twin Cities Metro, Minnesota. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can be used to explore the periodic characteristics of speed data and show abilities in increasing the accuracy of travel speed prediction

    Holographic Charged Fluid with Anomalous Current at Finite Cutoff Surface in Einstein-Maxwell Gravity

    The holographic charged fluid with anomalous current in Einstein-Maxwell gravity has been generalized from the infinite boundary to the finite cutoff surface by using the gravity/fluid correspondence. After perturbing the boosted Reissner-Nordstrom (RN)-AdS black brane solution of the Einstein-Maxwell gravity with the Chern-Simons term, we obtain the first order perturbative gravitational and Maxwell solutions, and calculate the stress tensor and charged current of the dual fluid at finite cutoff surfaces which contains undetermined parameters after demanding regularity condition at the future horizon. We adopt the Dirichlet boundary condition and impose the Landau frame to fix these parameters, finally obtain the dependence of transport coefficients in the dual stress tensor and charged current on the arbitrary radical cutoff rcr_c. We find that the dual fluid is not conformal, but it has vanishing bulk viscosity, and the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio is universally 1/4π1/4\pi. Other transport coefficients of the dual current turns out to be cutoff-dependent. In particular, the chiral vortical conductivity expressed in terms of thermodynamic quantities takes the same form as that of the dual fluid at the asymptotic AdS boundary, and the chiral magnetic conductivity receives a cutoff-dependent correction which vanishes at the infinite boundary.Comment: 19 pages, v2: references added, v3: typos corrected, v5: typos corrected, version accepted for publication in JHE

    Measurement of the WW production cross section in p anti-p collisions at s**(1/2) = 1.96 TeV

    We present a measurement of the W boson pair-production cross section in p anti-p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. The data, collected with the Run II DO detector, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 224-252 pb^-1 depending on the final state (ee, emu or mumu). We observe 25 candidates with a background expectation of 8.1+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.6(syst)+/-0.5(lum) events. The probability for an upward fluctuation of the background to produce the observed signal is 2.3x10^-7, equivalent to 5.2 standard deviations.The measurement yields a cross section of 13.8+4.3/-3.8(stat)+1.2/-0.9(syst)+/-0.9(lum) pb, in agreement with predictions from the standard model.Comment: submitted to PR
