    Foreign competition and innovation: The mediating role of imitation

    This study examines the extent to which foreign competition affects the innovation performance of domestic firms through imitation, given firms’ absorptive capacity. In analyzing longitudinal firm-level data from the U.K., we find a mediating effect of imitation on the relationship between foreign competition and local firms’ innovation performance, and an inverted U-shaped relationship between imitation and the innovation performance of local firms. Our findings further reveal that absorptive capacity moderates the mediating effect of imitation, diminishing innovation gains at moderate levels of imitation and mitigating the diminishing innovation performance at high levels of imitation

    A novel folic acid-conjugated TiO2–SiO2 photosensitizer for cancer targeting in photodynamic therapy

    In this paper, a novel folic acid-conjugated silica-coated titanium dioxide (TiO2–SiO2) photosensitizer was synthesized and characterized using various analytical instruments. The photosensitizer was further assessed with regards to its photoreactivity, cellular and hemocompatibility, cell internalization, and phototoxicity. Conjugating folic acid with TiO2–SiO2 has shown a significantly improved compatibility of the nanoparticles with the mouse fibroblast cells (L929) at 24 h. An improved compatibility with the human nasopharyngeal epidermoid cancer (KB) cells was also demonstrated, but to a slightly reduced degree. Enhanced cell internalization was well demonstrated in the TiO2–SiO2 folate nanoparticles. Upon exposure to UV light, TiO2–SiO2 folate nanoparticles maintained a high level photodynamic reactivity and yielded a 38–43% photo-killing of KB cells. The photo-killing effect increased with increasing dosage in the investigated concentration range of 50–100 μg ml−1

By illuminating knowledge frontier issues, we derive important directions for deepening the integration of IR scholarship to advance IB research

    Conductive hydrogel composites with autonomous self-healing properties

    Conventional conductive hydrogels usually lack self-healing properties, but might be favorable for smart electronic applications. Therefore, we present the fabrication of conductive self-healing hydrogels that merge the merits of electrical conductivity and self-healing properties. The conductive self-healing hydrogel composite was prepared by using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and a poly(N,N-dimethyl acrylamide) copolymer derivative modified with pyrene and borate functional moieties. While the tethered pyrene groups of the copolymer facilitated an even dispersion of the conductive components, i.e., SWCNTs, in aqueous solution via π–π stacking, the hydrogel system was formed via covalent dynamic cross-linking through tetrahedral borate ion interaction with the –OH group of PVA. The hydrogel composites exhibited bulk conductivity (1.27 S m−1^{−1} with 8 mg mL−1^{−1} SWCNTs) with a fast and autonomous self-healing ability that restored 95% of the original conductivity within 10 s under ambient conditions. Accordingly, due to their outstanding properties, we postulate that these composites may have potential in biomedical applications, such as tissue engineering, wound healing or electronic skins

    Distance-Decay Relationship for Biological Wastewater Treatment Plants.

    UnlabelledPatterns in the spatial distribution of organisms provide important information about mechanisms underlying biodiversity and the complexity of ecosystems. One of the most well-documented spatial patterns is the distance-decay relationship, which is a universal biogeographic pattern observed repeatedly for plant and animal communities, particularly for microorganisms in natural ecosystems such as soil, ocean, and salt marsh sediment. However, it is uncertain whether the microorganisms exhibit a distance-decay pattern in engineered ecosystems. Therefore, we measured the distance-decay relationship across various microbial functional and phylogenetic groups in 26 biological wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China using a functional gene array (GeoChip 4.2). We found that microbial communities of activated sludge in WWTPs exhibited a significant but very weak distance-decay relationship. The taxon-area z values for different functional and phylogenetic groups were <0.0065, which is about 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower than those observed in microbial communities elsewhere. Variation-partitioning analysis (VPA) showed that the relationships were driven by both environmental heterogeneity and geographic distance. Collectively, these results provided new insights into the spatial scaling of microbial communities in engineering ecosystems and highlighted the importance of environmental heterogeneity and geographic distance in shaping biogeographic patterns.ImportanceDetermining the distance-decay relationship of microbial biodiversity is important but challenging in microbial ecology. All studies to date are based on natural environments; thus, it remains unclear whether there is such a relationship in an engineered ecosystem.     Proteomic Analysis of Bacillus thuringiensis Strain 4.0718 at Different Growth Phases

    The growth process of Bacillus thuringiensis Bt4.0718 strain was studied using proteomic technologies. The proteins of Bt whole cells at three phases—middle vegetative, early sporulation, and late sporulation—were extracted with lysis buffer, followed with separation by 2-DE and identified by MALDI-TOF/TOF MS. Bioactive factors such as insecticidal crystal proteins (ICPs) including Cry1Ac(3), Cry2Aa, and BTRX28, immune inhibitor (InhA), and InhA precursor were identified. InhA started to express at the middle vegetative phase, suggesting its contribution to the survival of Bt in the host body. At the early sporulation phase, ICPs started their expression. CotJC, OppA, ORF1, and SpoIVA related to the formation of crystals and spores were identified, the expression characteristics of which ensured the stable formation of crystals and spores. This study provides an important foundation for further exploration of the stable expression of ICPs, the smooth formation of crystals, and the construction of recombinant strains

    Composition and predictive functional analysis of bacterial communities inhabiting Chinese Cordyceps insight into conserved core microbiome.

    BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, most attention to Chinese Cordyceps-associated endogenous microorganism was focused on the fungal community that creates critical bioactive components. Bacterial community associated with Chinese Cordyceps has been previously described; however, most studies were only presenting direct comparisons in the Chinese Cordyceps and its microenvironments. In the current study, our objectives were to reveal the bacterial community structure composition and predict their function. RESULTS: We collected samples of Chinese Cordyceps from five sites located in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and used a high throughput sequencing method to compare Chinese Cordyceps-associated bacterial community composition and diversity quantitatively across sites. The results indicated that for the Chinese Cordyceps-associated bacterial community there is no single core microbiome, which was dominated by the both Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Predictive functional profiling suggested a location specific function pattern for Chinese Cordyceps and bacteria in the external mycelial cortices involved in the biosynthesis of active constituents. CONCLUSIONS: This study is firstly used high throughput sequencing method to compare the bacterial communities inhabiting Chinese Cordyceps and its microhabitat and to reveal composition functional capabilities of the bacteria, which will accelerate the study of the functions of bacterial communities in the micro-ecological system of Chinese Cordyceps
