Interval Estimation for the Difference in Paired Areas under the ROC Curves in the Absence of a Gold Standard Test

    Get PDF
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves can be used to assess the accuracy of tests measured on ordinal or continuous scales. The most commonly used measure for the overall diagnostic accuracy of diagnostic tests is the area under the ROC curve (AUC). A gold standard test on the true disease status is required to estimate the AUC. However, a gold standard test may sometimes be too expensive or infeasible. Therefore, in many medical research studies, the true disease status of the subjects may remain unknown. Under the normality assumption on test results from each disease group of subjects, using the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm in conjunction with a bootstrap method, we propose a maximum likelihood based procedure for construction of confidence intervals for the difference in paired areas under ROC curves in the absence of a gold standard test. Simulation results show that the proposed interval estimation procedure yields satisfactory coverage probabilities and interval lengths. The proposed method is illustrated with two examples

Green credit and PM2.5: a time-varying perspective of China

    Get PDF
The causal link between green credit (GC) and particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is discussed this paper for the case of China using the bootstrap rolling-window Granger causality test. The fresh empirical results show that GC had both positive and negative influences on PM2.5 in two separate sub-sample periods. In turn, PM2.5 positively and consistently affected GC in two sub-sample periods. In addition, time periods without causalities were also found in the sample. These inconsistent conclusions do not provide strong support for the hypothesis that GC and PM2.5 would affect each other throughout the whole sampling period. Government intervention, public environmental awareness, the domestic economic situation, and other factors were fully considered in interpreting the deviations in certain periods. Thus, the major contribution of this study is that the linear assumption of causality was relaxed, which is more in line with China’s realities. Some policies are suggested to further strengthen the construction of the GC framework and establish a multiparticipant GC system. Moreover, PM2.5 is an important reference and can be incorporated into enterprises’ green financing strategy

Composite Fault Diagnosis in Rotating Machinery Based on Multi-Feature Fusion

    Get PDF
The rotating machinery working in complex environments of petrochemical units often develops composite faults and its vibration signal exhibits multicoupling, fuzziness, and nonlinearity, making it difficult to effectively diagnose composite faults. This paper proposes a composite fault diagnosis for rotating machinery based on multi-feature fusion. This method firstly extracts the time domain, the frequency domain and the dimensionless feature information, using the correlation analysis and normalization to obtain bodies of evidence with different features. Then, according to the fusion rules of the evidence theory, the synthesis of different bodies of evidence is completed. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed method exceeds 90%, thus it has been shown that the composite fault diagnosis of rotating machinery in petrochemical units is effective

Fault Feature Extraction of Bearings for the Petrochemical Industry and Diagnosis Based on High-Value Dimensionless Features

    Get PDF
The time and frequency domain features of a petrochemical unit have a variety of effects on the fault type of bearings, and the signal exhibits nonlinearity, unpredictability, and ergodicity. The detection system\u27s important data are disrupted by noise, resulting in a huge number of invalid and partial records. To reduce the influence of these factors on feature extraction, this work presents a method for the fault feature extraction of bearings for the petrochemical industry and for diagnosis based on high-value dimensionless features. Effective data are extracted from the obtained data using a complex data preprocessing approach, and the dimensionless index is expressed. Then, based on the distribution rule of the dimensionless index, the high-value dimensionless features are retrieved. Finally, to ensure sample completeness, a high-value dimensionless feature augmented model is developed. This approach is applied to the bearing fault experiment platform of a petrochemical unit to effectively classify the bearing fault features, which benefits theoretical guidance for the feature extraction of bearings for a petrochemical unit

Improved Algebraic Algorithm On Point Projection For Bézier Curves

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents an improved algebraic pruning method for point projection for Bézier curves. It first turns the point projection into a root finding problem, and provides a simple but easily overlooked method to avoid finding invalid roots which is obviously irrelative to the closest point. The continued fraction method and its expansion are utilized to strengthen its robustness. Since NURBS curves can be easily turned into Bézier form, the new method also works with NURBS curves. Examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency and robustness of the new method

Non-traditional CD4+CD25−CD69+ regulatory T cells are correlated to leukemia relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Background: Non-traditional CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells were found to be involved in disease progression in tumor-bearing mouse models and cancer patients recently. We attempted to define whether this subset of T cells were related to leukemia relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Methods: The frequency of CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells among the CD4+ T cell population from the bone marrow of relapsed patients, patients with positive minimal residual disease (MRD+) and healthy donors was examined by flow cytometry. The CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells were also stained with the intracellular markers to determine the cytokine (TGF-beta, IL-2 and IL-10) secretion. Results: The results showed that the frequency of CD4+CD25-CD69 + T cells was markedly increased in patients in the relapsed group and the MRD + group compared to the healthy donor group. The percentage of this subset of T cells was significantly decreased after effective intervention treatment. We also analyzed the reconstitution of CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells at various time points after allo-HSCT, and the results showed that this subset of T cells reconstituted rapidly and reached a relatively higher level at +60 d in patients compared to controls. The incidence of either MRD+ or relapse in patients with a high frequency of CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells (>7%) was significantly higher than that of patients with a low frequency of CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells at +60 d, +90 d and +270 d after transplant. However, our preliminary data indicated that CD4+CD25-CD69+ T cells may not exert immunoregulatory function via cytokine secretion. Conclusions: This study provides the first clinical evidence of a correlation between non-traditional CD4+CD25-CD69+ Tregs and leukemia relapse after allo-HSCT and suggests that exploration of new methods of adoptive immunotherapy may be beneficial. Further research related to regulatory mechanism behind this phenomenon would be necessary.Medicine, Research & ExperimentalSCI(E)[email protected]

Quorum Sensing System of Ruegeria mobilis Rm01 Controls Lipase and Biofilm Formation

    Get PDF
Quorum sensing (QS) promotes in situ extracellular enzyme (EE) activity via the exogenous signal N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL), which facilitates marine particle degradation, but the species that engage in this regulatory mechanism remain unclear. Here, we obtained AHL-producing and AHL-degrading strains from marine particles. The strain Ruegeria mobilis Rm01 of the Roseobacter group (RBG), which was capable of both AHL producing and degrading, was chosen to represent these strains. We demonstrated that Rm01 possessed a complex QS network comprising AHL-based QS and quorum quenching (QQ) systems and autoinducer-2 (AI-2) perception system. Rm01 was able to respond to multiple exogenous QS signals through the QS network. By applying self-generated AHLs and non-self-generated AHLs and AI-2 QS signal molecules, we modulated biofilm formation and lipase production in Rm01, which reflected the coordination of bacterial metabolism with that of other species via eavesdropping on exogenous QS signals. These results suggest that R. mobilis might be one of the participators that could regulate EE activities by responding to QS signals in marine particles

Cardiac troponin and C-reactive protein for predicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease: A meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Elevated serum levels of cardiac troponin and C-reactive protein are associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease. However, the relationship between these two biomarker levels and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease remains unclear. We conducted a meta-analysis to quantify the association of cardiac troponin and C-reactive protein levels with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. Relevant studies were identified by searching the MEDLINE database through November 2013. Studies were included in the meta-analysis if they reported the long-term all-cause or cardiovascular mortality of chronic kidney disease patients with abnormally elevated serum levels of cardiac troponin or C-reactive protein. Summary estimates of association were obtained using a random-effects model. Thirty-two studies met our inclusion criteria. From the pooled analysis, cardiac troponin and C-reactive protein were significantly associated with all-cause (HR 2.93, 95% CI 1.97-4.33 and HR 1.21, 95% CI 1.14-1.29, respectively) and cardiovascular (HR 3.27, 95% CI 1.67-6.41 and HR 1.19, 95% CI 1.10-1.28, respectively) mortality. In the subgroup analysis of cardiac troponin and C-reactive protein, significant heterogeneities were found among the subgroups of population for renal replacement therapy and for the proportion of smokers and the C-reactive protein analysis method. Elevated serum levels of cardiac troponin and C-reactive protein are significant associated with higher risks of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. Further studies are warranted to explore the risk stratification in chronic kidney disease patients
