Domains, text types, aspect marking and English-Chinese translation.
This paper uses an English-Chinese parallel corpus, an L1 Chinese comparable corpus, and an L1 Chinese reference corpus to examine how aspectual meanings in English are translated into Chinese and explore the effects of domains, text types and translation on aspect marking. We will show that while English and Chinese both mark aspect grammatically, the aspect system in the two languages differs considerably. Even though Chinese, as an aspect language, is rich in aspect markers, covert marking (LVM) is a frequent and important strategy in Chinese discourse. The distribution of aspect markers varies significantly across domain and text type. The study also sheds new light on the translation effect by contrasting aspect marking in translated Chinese texts and L1 Chinese texts
Factorization and Unitarity in Superstring Theory
The overall coefficient of the two-loop 4-particle amplitude in superstring
theory is determined by making use of the factorization and unitarity. To
accomplish this we computed in detail all the relevant tree and one-loop
amplitudes involved and determined their overall coefficients in a consistent

What Can Sla Learn From Contrastive Corpus Linguistics? the Case of Passive Constructions in Chinese Learner English
This article seeks to demonstrate the predictive and diagnostic power of the integrated approach that combines contrastive corpus linguistics with interlanguage analysis in second language acquisition research, via a case study of passive constructions in Chinese learner English. The type of corpora used in contrastive corpus linguistics is first discussed, which is followed by a summary of the findings from a published contrastive study of passive constructions in English and Chinese based on comparable corpora of the two languages. These findings are in turn used to predict and diagnose the performance of Chinese learners of English in their use of English passives as mirrored in a sizeable Chinese learner English corpus in comparison with a comparable native English corpus
Analyticity and the counting rule of matrix poles
By studying scattering amplitudes in the large limit, we
clarify the dependence of the matrix pole position. It is
demonstrated that analyticity and the counting rule exclude the existence

Is the meson a dynamically generated resonance? -- a lesson learned from the O(N) model and beyond
O(N) linear model is solvable in the large limit and hence
provides a useful theoretical laboratory to test various unitarization
approximations. We find that the large limit and the
limit do not commute. In order to get the correct large spectrum one has
to firstly take the large limit. We argue that the meson may
not be described as generated dynamically. On the contrary, it is most
appropriately described at the same level as the pions, i.e, both appear
explicitly in the effective lagrangian. Actually it is very likely the
meson responsible for the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a lagrangian

Factorization of the Two Loop Four-Particle Amplitude in Superstring Theory Revisited
We study in detail the factorization of the newly obtained two-loop
four-particle amplitude in superstring theory. In particular some missing
factors from the scalar correlators are obtained correctly, in comparing with a
previous study of the factorization in two-loop superstring theory. Some
details for the calculation of the factorization of the kinematic factor are

Realization of Artificial Ice Systems for Magnetic Vortices in a Superconducting MoGe Thin-film with Patterned Nanostructures
We report an anomalous matching effect in MoGe thin films containing pairs of
circular holes arranged in such a way that four of those pairs meet at each
vertex point of a square lattice. A remarkably pronounced fractional matching
was observed in the magnetic field dependences of both the resistance and the
critical current. At the half matching field the critical current can be even
higher than that at zero field. This has never been observed before for
vortices in superconductors with pinning arrays. Numerical simulations within
the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory reveal a square vortex ice configuration
in the ground state at the half matching field and demonstrate similar
characteristic features in the field dependence of the critical current,
confirming the experimental realization of an artificial ice system for

Situation aspect as a universal aspect:implications for artificial languages
Aspect, as one of the elements of verb mechanics, has been overlooked by many language designers. This paper argues that an artificial language, designed as a universal language for international communication, should incorporate the "universal" component of aspect found cross-linguistically in natural languages. In doing so, the paper develops a two-level model of situation aspect in which situation aspect is modelled as verb classes at the lexical level and as situation types at the sentential level. With a framework consisting of a lexicon, a layered clause structure and a set of mapping rules, the model is developed and tested using an English corpus and a Chinese corpus
