R&B: Region and Boundary Aware Zero-shot Grounded Text-to-image Generation
Recent text-to-image (T2I) diffusion models have achieved remarkable progress
in generating high-quality images given text-prompts as input. However, these
models fail to convey appropriate spatial composition specified by a layout
instruction. In this work, we probe into zero-shot grounded T2I generation with
diffusion models, that is, generating images corresponding to the input layout
information without training auxiliary modules or finetuning diffusion models.
We propose a Region and Boundary (R&B) aware cross-attention guidance approach
that gradually modulates the attention maps of diffusion model during
generative process, and assists the model to synthesize images (1) with high
fidelity, (2) highly compatible with textual input, and (3) interpreting layout
instructions accurately. Specifically, we leverage the discrete sampling to
bridge the gap between consecutive attention maps and discrete layout
constraints, and design a region-aware loss to refine the generative layout
during diffusion process. We further propose a boundary-aware loss to
strengthen object discriminability within the corresponding regions.
Experimental results show that our method outperforms existing state-of-the-art
zero-shot grounded T2I generation methods by a large margin both qualitatively
and quantitatively on several benchmarks.Comment: Preprint. Under review. Project page:

Transcriptome Analysis and Ultrastructure Observation Reveal that Hawthorn Fruit Softening Is due to Cellulose/Hemicellulose Degradation
Softening, a common phenomenon in many fruits, is a well coordinated and genetically determined process. However, the process of flesh softening during ripening has rarely been described in hawthorn. In this study, we found that ‘Ruanrou Shanlihong 3 Hao’ fruits became softer during ripening, whereas ‘Qiu JinXing’ fruits remained hard. At late developmental stages, the firmness of ‘Ruanrou Shanlihong 3 Hao’ fruits rapidly declined, and that of ‘Qiu JinXing’ fruits remained essentially unchanged. According to transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the middle lamella of ‘Qiu JinXing’ and ‘Ruanrou Shanlihong 3 Hao’ fruit flesh was largely degraded as the fruits matured. Microfilaments in ‘Qiu JinXing’ flesh were arranged close together and were deep in color, whereas those in ‘Ruanrou Shanlihong 3 Hao’ fruit flesh were arranged loosely, partially degraded and light in color. RNA-Seq analysis yielded approximately 46.72 Gb of clean data and 72,837 unigenes. Galactose metabolism and pentose and glucuronate interconversions are involved in cell wall metabolism, play an important role in hawthorn texture. We identified 85 unigenes related to the cell wall between hard- and soft-fleshed hawthorn fruits. Based on data analysis and real-time PCR, we suggest that β-GAL and PE4 have important functions in early fruit softening. The genes Ffase, Gns, α-GAL, PE63, XTH and CWP, which are involved in cell wall degradation, are responsible for the different textures of hawthorn fruits. Thus, we hypothesize that the different textures of ‘Qiu JinXing’ and ‘Ruanrou Shanlihong 3 Hao’ fruits at maturity mainly result from cellulose/hemicelluloses degradation rather than from lamella degradation. Overall, we propose that different types of hydrolytic enzymes in cells interact to degrade the cell wall, resulting in ultramicroscopic Structure changes in the cell wall and, consequently, fruit softening. These results provide fundamental insight regarding the mechanisms by which hawthorn fruits acquire different textures and also lay a solid foundation for further research

EDU-level Extractive Summarization with Varying Summary Lengths
Extractive models usually formulate text summarization as extracting top-k
important sentences from document as summary. Few work exploited extracting
finer-grained Elementary Discourse Unit (EDU) and there is little analysis and
justification for the extractive unit selection. To fill such a gap, this paper
firstly conducts oracle analysis to compare the upper bound of performance for
models based on EDUs and sentences. The analysis provides evidences from both
theoretical and experimental perspectives to justify that EDUs make more
concise and precise summary than sentences without losing salient information.
Then, considering this merit of EDUs, this paper further proposes EDU-level
extractive model with Varying summary Lengths (EDU-VL) and develops the
corresponding learning algorithm. EDU-VL learns to encode and predict
probabilities of EDUs in document, and encode EDU-level candidate summaries
with different lengths based on various values and select the best
candidate summary in an end-to-end training manner. Finally, the proposed and
developed approach is experimented on single and multi-document benchmark
datasets and shows the improved performances in comparison with the
state-of-the-art models
Dahuang Zhechong Pill Combined with Doxorubicin Induces Cell Death through Regulating Energy Metabolism in Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells
Many physiological activities such as cell survival, proliferation, defense, adaptation, and metabolism need to consume energy. Hepatoma cells can quickly start stress responses like multidrug resistance (MDR) requiring adenosine triphosphate (ATP) consumption after administration of chemotherapeutics. We employed CCK-8 assay to evaluate cell viability and the flow cytometry to confirm apoptosis and necrosis. ELISA kit was used to determine intracellular levels of ATP in lysates. Western blot was employed to analyze the expressions of key enzymes involved in energy metabolism. We found that doxorubicin (DOX) potently stimulated apoptosis at a low dose and even induced necrosis at a high dose in SMMC-7721. DHZCP combined with DOX at low or middle dose enhanced the synergistic antihepatoma effect. Results indicated that Dahuang Zhechong Pill (DHZCP) inhibited the expressions of several key enzymes involved in oxidative phosphorylation and reduced intracellular ATP levels. The combination of DHZCP with DOX reversed the elevation of intracellular ATP levels, and a significantly synergistic antitumor effect was observed. DHZCP could not only strengthen the therapeutic effects of chemotherapeutic drugs but also decrease the doses of chemotherapeutic drugs and the incidences of adverse reactions, providing novel strategies for clinical treatment of liver cancer

Efficient Thermal Conductance in Organometallic Perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 Films
Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices have shown great promise for solar
conversion and other optoelectronic applications, but their long-term
performance instability is regarded as a major obstacle to their widespread
deployment. Previous works have shown that the ultralow thermal conductivity
and inefficient heat spreading might put an intrinsic limit on the lifetime of
perovskite devices. Here, we report the observation of a remarkably efficient
thermal conductance, with conductivity of 11.2 +/- 0.8 W m^-1 K^-1 at room
temperature, in densely-packed perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 films, via noncontact
time-domain thermal reflectance measurements. The temperature-dependent
experiments suggest the important roles of organic cations and structural phase
transitions, which are further confirmed by temperature-dependent Raman
spectra. The thermal conductivity at room temperature observed here is over one
order of magnitude larger than that in the early report, suggesting that
perovskite device performance will not be limited by thermal stability
