    Mean-field limit of Non-exchangeable interacting diffusions with singular kernels

    The mean-field limit of interacting diffusions without exchangeability, caused by weighted interactions and non-i.i.d. initial values, are investigated. The weights could be signed and unbounded. The result applies to a large class of singular kernels including the Biot-Savart law. We demonstrate a flexible type of mean-field convergence, in contrast to the typical convergence of 1Ni=1NδXi\frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=1}^N\delta_{X_i}. More specifically, the sequence of signed empirical measure processes with arbitrary uniform lrl^r-weights, r>1r>1, weakly converges to a coupled PDE's, such as the dynamics describing the passive scalar advected by the 2D Navier-Stokes equation. Our method is based on a tightness/compactness argument and makes use of the systems' uniform Fisher information. The main difficulty is to determine how to propagate the regularity properties of the limits of empirical measures in the absence of the DeFinetti-Hewitt-Savage theorem for the non-exchangeable case. To this end, a sequence of random measures, which merges weakly with a sequence of weighted empirical measures and has uniform Sobolev regularity, is constructed through the disintegration of the joint laws of particles.Comment: 34 page

    AbstractObjectiveTo master the syndrome patterns characteristics and explore the effective therapy methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for cardiac syndrome X (CSX).MethodsThe TCM syndrome characteristics were mastered and the TCM intervention programs were determined by clinical investigations for TCM syndrome patterns characteristics of CSX patients. Then, the clinical efficacy studies on TCM intervention for CSX were carried out through randomized controlled trials.ResultsCSX is a clinical syndrome with the main manifestations of chest pain and chest stuffiness, and Qi stagnation, phlegm retention and blood stasis are the basic symptoms of CSX. As a result, the Qi-regulating, chest-relaxing and blood-activating therapy integrated with some Western Medicines was adopted for treatment. The effect of Qi-regulating, chest-relaxing and blood-activating therapy can reduce the frequency and degree of angina, improve the symptoms and exercise the tolerance of patients, inhibit the inflammatory response of vascular walls and protect the function of vascular endothelial cells, which is better than that of the simple and conventional Western Medicine alone.ConclusionA good effect was achieved in the integration of Chinese and Western Medicines for CSX. The therapy is worthy to be applied further in clinical practice. On the other hand, more long-term and randomised controlled studies with large samples are still required to further determine the clinical efficacy and safety of the therapy

    Size-Controlled Large-Diameter and Few-Walled Carbon Nanotube Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction

    We demonstrate a new strategy for tuning the size of large-diameter and few-walled nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) from 50 to 150 nm by varying the transition metal (TM = Fe, Co, Ni or Mn) used to catalyze graphitization of dicyandiamide. Fe yielded the largest tubes, followed by Co and Ni, while Mn produced a clot-like carbon morphology. We show that morphology is correlated with electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A clear trend of Fe \u3e Co \u3e Ni \u3e Mn for the ORR catalytic activity was observed, in both alkaline media and more demanding acidic media. The Fe-derived N-CNTs exhibited the highest BET (∼870 m2 g−1) and electrochemically accessible (∼450 m2 g−1) surface areas and, more importantly, the highest concentration of nitrogen incorporated into the carbon planes. Thus, in addition to the intrinsic high activity of Fe-derived catalysts, the high surface area and nitrogen doping contribute to high ORR activity. This work, for the first time, demonstrates size-controlled synthesis of large-diameter N-doped carbon tube electrocatalysts by varying the metal used in N-CNT generation. Electrocatalytic activity of the Fe-derived catalyst is already the best among studied metals, due to the high intrinsic activity of possible Fe–N coordination. This work further provides a promising route to advanced Fe–N–C nonprecious metal catalysts by generating favorable morphology with more active sites and improved mass transfer

    Optical Fiber LSPR Biosensor Prepared by Gold Nanoparticle Assembly on Polyelectrolyte Multilayer

    This article provides a novel method of constructing an optical fiber localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensor. A gold nanoparticle (NP) assembled film as the sensing layer was built on the polyelectrolyte (PE) multilayer modified sidewall of an unclad optical fiber. By using a trilayer PE structure, we obtained a monodisperse gold NP assembled film. The preparation procedure for this LSPR sensor is simple and time saving. The optical fiber LSPR sensor has higher sensitivity and outstanding reproducibility. The higher anti-interference ability for response to an antibody makes it a promising method in application as a portable immuno-sensor

    High-density genetic linkage mapping reveals low stability of QTLs across environments for economic traits in Eucalyptus

    IntroductionEucalyptus urophylla, E. tereticornis and their hybrids are the most important commercial forest tree species in South China where they are grown for pulpwood and solid wood production. Construction of a fine-scale genetic linkage map and detecting quantitative trait loci (QTL) for economically important traits linked to these end-uses will facilitate identification of the main candidate genes and elucidate the regulatory mechanisms.MethodA high-density consensus map (a total of 2754 SNPs with 1359.18 cM) was constructed using genotyping by sequencing (GBS) on clonal progenies of E. urophylla × tereticornis hybrids. QTL mapping of growth and wood property traits were conducted in three common garden experiments, resulting in a total of 108 QTLs. A total of 1052 candidate genes were screened by the efficient combination of QTL mapping and transcriptome analysis.ResultsOnly ten QTLs were found to be stable across two environments, and only one (qSG10Stable mapped on chromosome 10, and associated with lignin syringyl-to-guaiacyl ratio) was stable across all three environments. Compared to other QTLs, qSG10Stable explained a very high level of phenotypic variation (18.4–23.6%), perhaps suggesting that QTLs with strong effects may be more stably inherited across multiple environments. Screened candidate genes were associated with some transcription factor families, such as TALE, which play an important role in the secondary growth of plant cell walls and the regulation of wood formation.DiscussionWhile QTLs such as qSG10Stable, found to be stable across three sites, appear to be comparatively uncommon, their identification is likely to be a key to practical QTL-based breeding. Further research involving clonally-replicated populations, deployed across multiple target planting sites, will be required to further elucidate QTL-by-environment interactions

    Molecules of senescent glial cells differentiate Alzheimer's disease from ageing

    BACKGROUND: Ageing is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is accompanied by cellular senescence and thousands of transcriptional changes in the brain. OBJECTIVES: To identify the biomarkers in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that could help differentiate healthy ageing from neurodegenerative processes. METHODS: Cellular senescence and ageing-related biomarkers were assessed in primary astrocytes and postmortem brains by immunoblotting and immunohistochemistry. The biomarkers were measured in CSF samples from the China Ageing and Neurodegenerative Disorder Initiative cohort using Elisa and the multiplex Luminex platform. RESULTS: The cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors p16/p21-positive senescent cells in human postmortem brains were predominantly astrocytes and oligodendrocyte lineage cells, which accumulated in AD brains. CCL2, YKL-40, HGF, MIF, S100B, TSP2, LCN2 and serpinA3 are biomarkers closely related to human glial senescence. Moreover, we discovered that most of these molecules, which were upregulated in senescent glial cells, were significantly elevated in the AD brain. Notably, CSF YKL-40 (β=0.5412, p<0.0001) levels were markedly elevated with age in healthy older individuals, whereas HGF (β=0.2732, p=0.0001), MIF (β=0.33714, p=0.0017) and TSP2 (β=0.1996, p=0.0297) levels were more susceptible to age in older individuals with AD pathology. We revealed that YKL-40, TSP2 and serpinA3 were useful biomarkers for discriminating patients with AD from CN individuals and non-AD patients. DISCUSSION: Our findings demonstrated the different patterns of CSF biomarkers related to senescent glial cells between normal ageing and AD, implicating these biomarkers could identify the road node in healthy path off to neurodegeneration and improve the accuracy of clinical AD diagnosis, which would help promote healthy ageing

    Identification of Salt Tolerance-related microRNAs and Their Targets in Maize (Zea mays L.) Using High-throughput Sequencing and Degradome Analysis

    To identify the known and novel microRNAs (miRNAs) and their targets that are involved in the response and adaptation of maize (Zea mays) to salt stress, miRNAs and their targets were identified by a combined analysis of the deep sequencing of small RNAs (sRNA) and degradome libraries. The identities were confirmed by a quantitative expression analysis with over 100 million raw reads of sRNA and degradome sequences. A total of 1040 previously known miRNAs were identified from four maize libraries, with 762 and 726 miRNAs derived from leaves and roots, respectively, and 448 miRNAs that were common between the leaves and roots. A total of 37 potential new miRNAs were selected based on the same criteria in response to salt stress. In addition to known miR167 and miR164 species, novel putative miR167 and miR164 species were also identified. Deep sequencing of miRNAs and the degradome [with quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analyses of their targets] showed that more than one species of novel miRNA may play key roles in the response to salinity in maize. Furthermore, the interaction between miRNAs and their targets may play various roles in different parts of maize in response to salinity

    Differential proteomic profiles and characterizations between hyalinocytes and granulocytes in ivory shell Babylonia areolata

    Abstract(#br)The haemocytes of the ivory shell, Babylonia areolata are classified by morphologic observation into the following types: hyalinocytes (H) and granulocytes (G). Haemocytes comprise diverse cell types with morphological and functional heterogene and play indispensable roles in immunological homeostasis of invertebrates. In the present study, two types of haemocytes were morphologically identified and separated as H and G by Percoll density gradient centrifugation. The differentially expressed proteins were investigated between H and G using mass spectrometry. The results showed that total quantitative proteins between H and G samples were 1644, the number of up-regulated proteins in G was 215, and the number of down-regulated proteins in G was 378. Among them, cathepsin, p38 MAPK, toll-interacting protein-like and beta-adrenergic receptor kinase 2-like were up-regulated in G; alpha-2-macroglobulin-like protein, C-type lectin, galectin-2-1, galectin-3, β-1,3-glucan-binding protein, ferritin, mega-hemocyanin, mucin-17-like, mucin-5AC-like and catalytic subunit of protein kinase A were down-regulated in G. The results showed that the most significantly enriched KEGG pathways were the pathways related to ribosome, phagosome, endocytosis, carbon metabolism, protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum and oxidative phosphorylation. For phagosome and endocytosis pathway, the number of down-regulation proteins in G was more than that of up-regulation proteins. For lysosome pathway, the number of up-regulation proteins in G was more than that of down-regulation proteins. These results suggested that two sub-population haemocytes perform the different immune functions in B. areolata

    Influence of academic stress and school bullying on self-harm behaviors among Chinese middle school students: The mediation effect of depression and anxiety

    ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between academic stress, school bullying and self-harm behaviors among Chinese middle school students and to further explore the impact of anxiety and depression on this relationship.MethodsThe students (aged 12–16 years) in a middle school in Changsha city were invited to respond to a questionnaire through an online platform. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) were used to assess the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively. The experience of being bullied, academic stress, and self-harm behaviors were assessed using several questions on the basis of previous studies.ResultsA total of 1,313 middle school students completed the study, and 3.40% and 4.10% of them reported suicide attempts (SAs) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), respectively. Univariate logistic regression analysis revealed that anxiety symptoms (OR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.18–1.28; OR = 1.25, 95% CI: 1.19–1.31), depressive symptoms (OR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.16–1.25; OR = 1.26, 95% CI: 1.20–1.31), school bullying (OR = 3.8, 95% CI: 2.11–6.89; OR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.39–5.47), and academic stress (OR = 2.20, 95% CI: 1.27–3.80; OR = 3.80, 95% CI: 1.20–7.25) were common factors of NSSI and SAs. In addition, depressive symptoms showed a mediating effect on the association of school bullying and academic stress with SAs or NSSI, and anxiety symptoms showed a mediating effect on the association of school bullying and academic stress with NSSI only.ConclusionAppropriate strategies are needed to reduce academic pressure and prevent school bullying. Meanwhile, negative emotions such as depression and anxiety should be evaluated and intervened in to prevent self-harm behaviors among middle school students
