    Revealing microstructural evolutions, mechanical properties and wear performance of wire arc additive manufacturing homogeneous and heterogeneous NiTi alloy

    Heterogeneous microstructure designs have attracted a great deal of attention, not only because they have the potential to achieve an ideal combination of two conflicting properties, but also because the processes involved in their fabrication are cost-effective and can be scaled up for industrial production. The process parameters in the preparation process have an important effect on the microstructure and properties of alloy members prepared by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology. It was expected that the spatial heterogeneous microstructure with large microstructural heterogeneities in metals can be formed through changing the process parameters. In this work, homogeneous NiTi thin-walled component and heterogeneous NiTi thin-walled component were fabricated using WAAM technology by adjusting the heat input. The effects of deposition height and heat input on the microstructure, mechanical properties and wear properties of WAAM NiTi alloys were investigated. The results show that grains were gradually refined with the increase of deposition height in the homogeneous WAAM NiTi component. The ultimate tensile strength of homogeneous WAAM NiTi component increased from 606.87 MPa to 654.45 MPa and the elongation increased from 12.72% to 15.38%, as the increase of deposition height. Moreover, the homogeneous WAAM NiTi component exhibited excellent wear resistance, the coefficient of friction decreased from 0.760 to 0.715 with the increase of deposition height. Meanwhile, the grains in the heterogeneous WAAM NiTi component shows the finest grains in the central region. The ultimate tensile strength of the lower region, middle region and upper region of heterogeneous WAAM NiTi components were 556.12 MPa, 599.53 MPa and 739.79 MPa, and the elongations were 12.98%, 16.69%, 21.74%, respectively. The coefficient of friction for the lower region, middle region and upper region of heterogeneous WAAM NiTi components were 0.713, 0.720 and 0.710, respectively. The microhardness and cyclic compression properties of the homogeneous components with higher heat input were better than those of the heterogeneous components for the same deposition height. The tensile yield strength, elongation and wear resistance of the heterogeneous components were superior compared to the homogeneous components. These results can be used to optimize the WAAM process parameters to prepare NiTi components with excellent mechanical properties

    Down-regulation of SFRP1 as a putative tumor suppressor gene can contribute to human hepatocellular carcinoma

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers in the world. SFRP1 (the secreted frizzled-related protein 1), a putative tumor suppressor gene mapped onto chromosome 8p12-p11.1, the frequent loss of heterozygosity (LOH) region in human HCC, encodes a Wingless-type (Wnt) signaling antagonist and is frequently inactivated by promoter methylation in many human cancers. However, whether the down-regulation of SFRP1 can contribute to hepatocarcinogenesis still remains unclear.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We investigated the expression of SFRP1 through real time RT-PCR and immunohistochemistry staining. The cell growth and colony formation were observed as the overexpression and knockdown of SFRP1. The DNA methylation status within SFRP1 promoter was analyzed through methylation-specific PCR or bisulphate-treated DNA sequencing assays. Loss of heterozygosity was here detected with microsatellite markers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>SFRP1 was significantly down-regulated in 76.1% (35/46) HCC specimens at mRNA level and in 30% (30/100) HCCs indicated by immunohistochemistry staining, as compared to adjacent non-cancerous livers. The overexpression of SFRP1 can significantly inhibit the cell growth and colony formation of YY-8103, SMMC7721, and Hep3B cells. The RNA interference against the constitutional SFRP1 in the offspring SMMC7721 cells, which were stably transfected by ectopic SFRP1, can markedly promote cell growth of these cells. LOH of both microsatellite markers D8S532 and D8SAC016868 flanking the gene locus was found in 13% (6 of 46 HCCs) and 6.5% (3 of 46 HCCs) of the informative cases, respectively, where 5 of 8 HCC specimens with LOH showed the down-regulation of SFRP1. DNA hypermethylation within SFRP1 promoter was identified in two of three HCC specimens without SFRP1 expression. Moreover, the DNA methylation of SFRP1 promoter was significantly reduced, along with the re-expression of the gene, in those HCC cell lines, Bel7404, QGY7701, and MHCC-H, as treated by DAC.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our data suggested that the down-regulation of SFRP1 as a candidate tumor suppressor gene, triggered by the epigenetic and/or genetic events, could contribute to the oncogenesis of HCC.</p

    Study of multi-muon events produced in p\bar{p} interactions at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV

Removed typos from the authors' listWe report the results of a study of multi-muon events produced at the Fermilab Tevatron collider and acquired with the CDF II detector using a dedicated dimuon trigger. The production cross section and kinematics of events in which both muon candidates are produced inside the beam pipe of radius 1.5 cm are successfully modeled by known processes which include heavy flavor production. In contrast, we are presently unable to fully account for the number and properties of the remaining events, in which at least one muon candidate is produced outside of the beam pipe, in terms of the same understanding of the CDF II detector, trigger, and event reconstruction.Peer reviewe

    Hippocampal neurochemistry is involved in the behavioural effects of neonatal maternal separation and their reversal by post-weaning environmental enrichment: A magnetic resonance study

    Exposure to early life stress results in behavioural changes, and these dysfunctions may persist throughout adulthood. In this study, we investigated whether hippocampus volume and neurochemical changes were involved in the appearance of these effects in the maternal separation (MS) animal model using the noninvasive techniques of structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to MS for 180. min from postnatal days (PND) 2-14 demonstrated decreased sucrose preference, increased immobility in the forced swimming test (FST), and impaired memory in the Morris water maze in adulthood. Environmental enrichment (EE) (PND 21-60) could ameliorate the effects of MS on sucrose preference and learning and memory but not on immobility in the FST. In addition, EE significantly increased N-acetylaspartate (NAA) of MS animals. However, we did not find an effect of MS or EE on hippocampal volume. These results indicate the involvement of hippocampal neurochemistry in the behavioural changes that result from early stressful life events and their modification by post-weaning EE. Thus changes in NAA, as a measure of neuronal integrity, appear to be a sensitive correlate of these behavioural effects. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
