Vacuum Alignment in SUSY A4 Models
In this note we discuss the vacuum alignment in supersymmetric models with
spontaneously broken flavour symmetries in the presence of soft supersymmetry
(SUSY) breaking terms. We show that the inclusion of soft SUSY breaking terms
can give rise to non-vanishing vacuum expectation values (VEVs) for the
auxiliary components of the flavon fields. These non-zero VEVs can have an
important impact on the phenomenology of this class of models, since they can
induce an additional flavour violating contribution to the sfermion soft mass
matrix of right-left (RL) type. We carry out an explicit computation in a class
of SUSY A4 models predicting tri-bimaximal mixing in the lepton sector. The
flavour symmetry breaking sector is described in terms of flavon and driving
supermultiplets. We find non-vanishing VEVs for the auxiliary components of the
flavon fields and for the scalar components of the driving fields which are of
order m_{SUSY} x and m_{SUSY}, respectively. Thereby, m_{SUSY} is the
generic soft SUSY breaking scale which is expected to be around 1 TeV and
is the VEV of scalar components of the flavon fields. Another effect of these
VEVs can be the generation of a mu term.Comment: 23 pages; added a new section on the relation to Supergravity;

Nonzero |Ue3| from charged lepton corrections and the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle
After the successful determination of the reactor neutrino mixing angle heta_13 ~ 0.16
eq 0, a new feature suggested by the current neutrino oscillation data is a sizeable deviation of the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle heta_23 from \pi/4. Using the fact that the neutrino mixing matrix U = U_e^\dagger U_
u, where U_e and U_
u result from the diagonalisation of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, and assuming that U_
u has a i) bimaximal (BM), ii) tri-bimaximal (TBM) form, or else iii) corresponds to the conservation of the lepton charge L' = L_e - L_\mu - L_ au (LC), we investigate quantitatively what are the minimal forms of U_e, in terms of angles and phases it contains, that can provide the requisite corrections to U_
u so that heta_13, heta_23 and the solar neutrino mixing angle heta_12 have values compatible with the current data. Two possible orderings of the 12 and the 23 rotations in U_e, "standard" and "inverse", are considered. The results we obtain depend strongly on the type of ordering. In the case of "standard" ordering, in particular, the Dirac CP violation phase \delta, present in U, is predicted to have a value in a narrow interval around i) \delta ~ \pi in the BM (or LC) case, ii) \delta ~ 3\pi/2 or \pi/2 in the TBM case, the CP conserving values \delta = 0, \pi, 2\pi being excluded in the TBM case at more than 4\sigma
cDNA Cloning and Expression Analysis of Gustavus Gene in the Oriental River Prawn Macrobrachium nipponense
The gustavus gene is required for localizing pole plasm and specifying germ cells. Research on gustavus gene expression will advance our understanding of the biological function of gustavus in animals. A cDNA encoding gustavus protein was identified and termed MnGus in the oriental river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense. Bioinformatic analyses showed that this gene encoded a protein of 262 amino acids and the protein belongs to the Spsb1 family. Real-time quantitative PCR analyses revealed that the expression level of MnGus in prawn embryos was slightly higher at the cleavage stage than at the blastula stage, and reached the maximum level during the zoea stage of embryos. The minimum level of MnGus expression occurred during the perinucleolus stage in the ovary, while the maximum was at the oil globule stage, and then the level of MnGus expression gradually decreased with the advancement of ovarian development. The expression level of MnGus in muscle was much higher than that in other tissues in mature prawn. The gustavus cDNA sequence was firstly cloned from the oriental river prawn and the pattern of gene expression was described during oocyte maturation, embryonic development, and in other tissues. The differential expression patterns of MnGus in the embryo, ovary and other somatic tissues suggest that the gustavus gene performs multiple physiological functions in the oriental river prawn
Stable fermion mass matrices and the charged lepton contribution to neutrino mixing
We study the general properties of hierarchical fermion mass matrices in which the small eigenvalues are stable with respect to perturbations of the matrix entries and we consider specific applications to the charged lepton contribution to neutrino mixing. In particular, we show that the latter can account for the whole lepton mixing. In this case a value of sin 㮁3 73 me/m\u3bcsin 㮂3 48 0.03, as observed, can be obtained without the need of any fine-tuning, and present data allow to determine the last row of the charged lepton mass matrix with good accuracy. We also consider the case in which the neutrino sector only provides a maximal 12 rotation and show that i) present data provide a 2\u3c3 evidence for a non-vanishing 31 entry of the charged lepton mass matrix and ii) a plausible texture for the latter can account at the same time for the atmospheric mixing angle, the 㮁3angle, and the deviation of the 㮁2angle from \u3c0/2 without fine-tuning or tension with data. Finally, we show that the so-called “inverted order” of the 12 and 23 rotations in the charged lepton sector can be obtained without fine-tuning, up to corrections of order me/m\u3bc. \ua9 2014, The Author(s)
Sizeable heta_13 from the Charged Lepton Sector in SU(5), (Tri-)Bimaximal Neutrino Mixing and Dirac CP Violation
The recent results from T2K and MINOS experiments point towards a relatively
large value of the reactor angle heta_13 in the lepton sector. In this paper
we show how a large heta_13 can arise from the charged lepton sector alone in
the context of an SU(5) GUT. In such a scenario (tri-)bimaximal mixing in the
neutrino sector is still a viable possibility. We also analyse the general
implications of the considered scenario for the searches of CP violation in
neutrino oscillations.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures; version to be published in JHE
Toward Sustainable and Comprehensive Control of Schistosomiasis in China: Lessons from Sichuan
Triggered by a fascinating publication in the New England Journal of Medicine detailing China's new multi-pronged strategy to control and eventually interrupt the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum, this PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Debate critically examines the generalizability and financial costs of the studies presented from the marshlands of the lake region. Edmund Seto from the University of California and colleagues emphasize that the epidemiology and control of schistosomiasis varies according to the social-ecological context. They conjecture that the successful intervention packages piloted in the lake region is not fully fit for the hilly and mountainous environments in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, and hence call for more flexible, setting-specific, and less expensive control strategies. In response, Xiao-Nong Zhou from the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases at the Chinese Center of Disease Control and Prevention and colleagues explain the steps from designing pilot studies to the articulation and implementation of a new national control strategy through a careful process of scaling-up and adaptations. Finally, the two opponents converge. The need for integrated, intersectoral, and setting-specific control measures is stressed, supported by rigorous surveillance and continuous research. Experiences and lessons from China are important for shaping the schistosomiasis elimination agenda
alphabeta T cell receptors as predictors of health and disease
The diversity of antigen receptors and the specificity it underlies are the hallmarks of the cellular arm of the adaptive immune system. T and B lymphocytes are indeed truly unique in their ability to generate receptors capable of recognizing virtually any pathogen. It has been known for several decades that T lymphocytes recognize short peptides derived from degraded proteins presented by major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules at the cell surface. Interaction between peptide-MHC (pMHC) and the T cell receptor (TCR) is central to both thymic selection and peripheral antigen recognition. It is widely assumed that TCR diversity is required, or at least highly desirable, to provide sufficient immune coverage. However, a number of immune responses are associated with the selection of predictable, narrow, or skewed repertoires and public TCR chains. Here, we summarize the current knowledge on the formation of the TCR repertoire and its maintenance in health and disease. We also outline the various molecular mechanisms that govern the composition of the pre-selection, naive and antigen-specific TCR repertoires. Finally, we suggest that with the development of high-throughput sequencing, common TCR \u27signatures\u27 raised against specific antigens could provide important diagnostic biomarkers and surrogate predictors of disease onset, progression and outcome
RMDM and Lepton Flavor Violation
A model relating radiative seesaw and minimal dark matter mass scales without
beyond the standard model (SM) gauge symmetry (RMDM) is constructed. In
addition to the SM particles, the RMDM contains, a Majorana fermion
multiplet and scalar multiplet that transform respectively as
and under the SM gauge group . The neutral component plays the role of dark
matter with a mass in the range of 9 to 10 TeV. This scale also sets the lower
limit for the scale for the heavy degrees of freedom in and which
generate light neutrino masses through the radiative seesaw mechanism. The
model predicts an -nucleus scattering cross section that would be
accessible with future dark matter direct detection searches as well as
observable effects in present and searches for charged lepton flavor violating
processes, such as and conversion.Comment: Latex 18 pages with 7 figures. Discussions added in dark matter
