Quantum kinetic description of Coulomb effects in one-dimensional nano-transistors
In this article, we combine the modified electrostatics of a one-dimensional
transistor structure with a quantum kinetic formulation of Coulomb interaction
and nonequilibrium transport. A multi-configurational self-consistent Green's
function approach is presented, accounting for fluctuating electron numbers. On
this basis we provide a theory for the simulation of electronic transport and
quantum charging effects in nano-transistors, such as gated carbon nanotube and
whisker devices and one-dimensional CMOS transistors. Single-electron charging
effects arise naturally as a consequence of the Coulomb repulsion within the
channel
In Situ Formation of Crystallographically Oriented Semiconductor Nanowire Arrays via Selective Vaporization for Optoelectronic Applications
Direct transformation of bulk crystals to single-crystalline crystallographically oriented semiconductor nanowire arrays is presented. Real-time imaging during in situ environmental scanning electron microscopy experiment clearly demonstrates that the nanowire arrays form through a selective vaporization process with respect to the crystallography of wurtzite crystals. Due to the high quality of the prepared semiconductor nanowire arrays, photodetectors constructed from them can present superior optoelectronic performances
Fermi-level alignment at metal-carbon nanotube interfaces: application to scanning tunneling spectroscopy
At any metal-carbon nanotube interface there is charge transfer and the
induced interfacial field determines the position of the carbon nanotube band
structure relative to the metal Fermi-level. In the case of a single-wall
carbon nanotube (SWNT) supported on a gold substrate, we show that the charge
transfers induce a local electrostatic potential perturbation which gives rise
to the observed Fermi-level shift in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS)
measurements. We also discuss the relevance of this study to recent experiments
on carbon nanotube transistors and argue that the Fermi-level alignment will be
different for carbon nanotube transistors with low resistance and high
resistance contacts.Comment: 4 pages, 3 ps figures, minor corrections, accepted by Phys. Rev. Let
PP1A-Mediated Dephosphorylation Positively Regulates YAP2 Activity
Background: The Hippo/MST1 signaling pathway plays an important role in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis. As a major downstream target of the Hippo/MST1 pathway, YAP2 (Yes-associated protein 2) functions as a transcriptional cofactor that has been implicated in many biological processes, including organ size control and cancer development. MST1/Lats kinase inhibits YAP2’s nuclear accumulation and transcriptional activity through inducing the phosphorylation at serine 127 and the sequential association with 14-3-3 proteins. However, the dephosphorylation of YAP2 is not fully appreciated. Methodology/Principal Findings: In the present study, we demonstrate that PP1A (catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase-1) interacts with and dephosphorylates YAP2 in vitro and in vivo, and PP1A-mediated dephosphorylation induces the nuclear accumulation and transcriptional activation of YAP2. Inhibition of PP1 by okadiac acid (OA) increases the phosphorylation at serine 127 and cytoplasmic translocation of YAP2 proteins, thereby mitigating its transcription activity. PP1A expression enhances YAP2’s pro-survival capability and YAP2 knockdown sensitizes ovarian cancer cells to cisplatin treatment. Conclusions/Significance: Our findings define a novel molecular mechanism that YAP2 is positively regulated by PP1mediate
Critical current density: Measurements vs. reality
Different experimental techniques are employed to evaluate the critical current density (Jc), namely transport current measurements and two different magnetisation measurements forming quasi-equilibrium and dynamic critical states. Our technique-dependent results for superconducting YBa 2Cu3O7 (YBCO) film and MgB2 bulk samples show an extremely high sensitivity of Jc and associated interpretations, such as irreversibility fields and Kramer plots, which lose meaning without a universal approach. We propose such approach for YBCO films based on their unique pinning features. This approach allows us to accurately recalculate the magnetic-field-dependent Jc obtained by any technique into the Jc behaviour, which would have been measured by any other method without performing the corresponding experiments. We also discovered low-frequency-dependent phenomena, governing flux dynamics, but contradicting the considered ones in the literature. The understanding of these phenomena, relevant to applications with moving superconductors, can clarify their dramatic impact on the electric-field criterion through flux diffusivity and corresponding measurements. © Copyright EPLA, 2013

We functionally characterized RhoS/RSA-14-44 as a new member of Rho GTPase subfamily in spermatogenesis, which provides a direct link between Rho family GTPase and the proteasome biogenesis
