Exterior complex scaling as a perfect absorber in time-dependent problems
It is shown that exterior complex scaling provides for complete absorption of
outgoing flux in numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger
equation with strong infrared fields. This is demonstrated by computing high
harmonic spectra and wave-function overlaps with the exact solution for a
one-dimensional model system and by three-dimensional calculations for the H
atom and a Ne atom model. We lay out the key ingredients for correct
implementation and identify criteria for efficient discretization
Decoding of 1/2-rate (24,12) Golay codes
A decoding method for a (23,12) Golay code is extended to the important 1/2-rate (24,12) Golay code so that three errors can be corrected and four errors can be detected. It is shown that the method can be extended to any decoding method which can correct three errors in the (23,12) Golay code
Perturbation theory of von Neumann Entropy
In quantum information theory, von Neumann entropy plays an important role.
The entropies can be obtained analytically only for a few states. In continuous
variable system, even evaluating entropy numerically is not an easy task since
the dimension is infinite. We develop the perturbation theory systematically
for calculating von Neumann entropy of non-degenerate systems as well as
degenerate systems. The result turns out to be a practical way of the expansion
calculation of von Neumann entropy.Comment: 7 page
Arts Integration Self Study Research
The goal of Ms. Reed and Mr. Torres was to determine how the use of arts integration could impact the classroom setting and their teaching practices. Through the use of performance and visual arts, the data represents their findings, as they monitored their research question during the course of their eight-week practicum. They both discovered that, through arts integration, their students\u27 engagement and overall classroom management had improved. Continuing, Ms. Reed also found a positive correlation with her students’ academic scores, as well

Frequency-Domain Streak Camera And Tomography For Ultrafast Imaging Of Evolving And Channeled Plasma Accelerator Structures
We demonstrate a prototype Frequency Domain Streak Camera (FDSC) that can capture the picosecond time evolution of the plasma accelerator structure in a single shot. In our prototype Frequency-Domain Streak Camera, a probe pulse propagates obliquely to a sub-picosecond pump pulse that creates an evolving nonlinear index >bubble> in fused silica glass, supplementing a conventional Frequency Domain Holographic (FDH) probe-reference pair that co-propagates with the >bubble>. Frequency Domain Tomography (FDT) generalizes Frequency-Domain Streak Camera by probing the >bubble> from multiple angles and reconstructing its morphology and evolution using algorithms similar to those used in medical CAT scans. Multiplexing methods (Temporal Multiplexing and Angular Multiplexing) improve data storage and processing capability, demonstrating a compact Frequency Domain Tomography system with a single spectrometer.Physic
Modeling Bitcoin Contracts by Timed Automata
Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer cryptographic currency system. Since its
introduction in 2008, Bitcoin has gained noticeable popularity, mostly due to
its following properties: (1) the transaction fees are very low, and (2) it is
not controlled by any central authority, which in particular means that nobody
can "print" the money to generate inflation. Moreover, the transaction syntax
allows to create the so-called contracts, where a number of
mutually-distrusting parties engage in a protocol to jointly perform some
financial task, and the fairness of this process is guaranteed by the
properties of Bitcoin. Although the Bitcoin contracts have several potential
applications in the digital economy, so far they have not been widely used in
real life. This is partly due to the fact that they are cumbersome to create
and analyze, and hence risky to use.
In this paper we propose to remedy this problem by using the methods
originally developed for the computer-aided analysis for hardware and software
systems, in particular those based on the timed automata. More concretely, we
propose a framework for modeling the Bitcoin contracts using the timed automata
in the UPPAAL model checker. Our method is general and can be used to model
several contracts. As a proof-of-concept we use this framework to model some of
the Bitcoin contracts from our recent previous work. We then automatically
verify their security in UPPAAL, finding (and correcting) some subtle errors
that were difficult to spot by the manual analysis. We hope that our work can
draw the attention of the researchers working on formal modeling to the problem
of the Bitcoin contract verification, and spark off more research on this
topic
Ab initio study of single molecular transistor modulated by gate-bias
We use a self-consistent method to study the current of the single molecular
transistor modulated by the transverse gate-bias in the level of the
first-principles calculations. The numerical results show that both the
polyacene-dithiol molecules and the fused-ring oligothiophene molecules are the
potential high-frequency molecular transistor controlled by the transverse
field. The long molecules of the polyacene-dithiol or the fused-ring thiophene
are in favor of realizing the gate-bias controlled molecular transistor. The
theoretical results suggest the related experiments.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Complexity of diatom response to Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in ancient, deep and oligotrophic Lake Ohrid (Macedonia and Albania)
© Author(s) 2016. Lake Ohrid (Macedonia and Albania) is a rare example of a deep, ancient Mediterranean lake and is a key site for palaeoclimate research in the northeastern Mediterranean region. This study conducts the analysis of diatoms as a proxy for Lateglacial and Holocene climate and environmental change in Lake Ohrid at a higher resolution than in previous studies. While Lake Ohrid has the potential to be sensitive to water temperature change, the data demonstrate a highly complex diatom response, probably comprising a direct response to temperature-induced lake productivity in some phases and an indirect response to temperaturerelated lake stratification or mixing and epilimnetic nutrient availability in others. The data also demonstrate the possible influence of physical limnological (e.g. the influence of wind stress on stratification or mixing) and chemical processes (e.g. the influence of catchment dynamics on nutrient input) in mediating the complex response of diatoms. During the Lateglacial (ca. 12 300-11 800 cal yr BP), the low-diversity dominance of hypolimnetic Cyclotella fottii indicates low lake productivity, linked to low water temperature. Although the subsequent slight increase in small, epilimnetic C. minuscula during the earliest Holocene (ca. 11 800-10 600 cal yr BP) suggests climate warming and enhanced stratification, diatom concentration remains as low as during the Lateglacial, suggesting that water temperature increase was muted across this major transition. The early Holocene (ca. 10 600-8200 cal yr BP) is characterised by a sustained increase in epilimnetic taxa, with mesotrophic C. ocellata indicating high water-temperature-induced productivity between ca. 10 600-10 200 cal yr BP and between ca. 9500-8200 cal yr BP and with C. minuscula in response to low nutrient availability in the epilimnion between ca. 10 200-9500 cal yr BP. During the middle Holocene (ca. 8200-2600 cal yr BP), when sedimentological and geochemical proxies provide evidence for maximum Holocene water temperature, anomalously low C. ocellata abundance is probably a response to epilimnetic nutrient limitation, almost mimicking the Lateglacial flora apart from the occurrence of mesotrophic Stephanodiscus transylvanicus in the hypolimnion. During the late Holocene (ca. 2600 cal yr BP-present), high abundance and fluctuating composition of epilimnetic taxa are probably a response more to enhanced anthropogenic nutrient input, particularly nitrogen enrichment, than to climate. Overall, the data indicate that previous assumptions concerning the linearity of diatom response in this deep, ancient lake are invalid, and multi-proxy analysis is essential to improve understanding of palaeolimnological dynamics in future research on the long, Quaternary sequence
