Description of rotating N=ZN=Z nuclei in terms of isovector pairing

A systematic investigation of the rotating N=ZN=Z even-even nuclei in the mass A=58−80A=58-80 region has been performed within the frameworks of the Cranked Relativistic Mean field, Cranked Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov theories and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky approach. Most of the experimental data is well accounted for in the calculations. The present study suggests that there is strong isovector npnp-pair field at low spin, the strength of which is defined by the isospin symmetry. At high spin, the isovector pair field is destroyed and the data are well described by the calculations assuming zero pairing. No clear evidence for the existence of the isoscalar t=0t=0 npnp-pairing has been obtained in the present investigation.Comment: 20 pages + 19 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Nonlinear viscoelasticity of metastable complex fluids

Many metastable complex fluids such as colloidal glasses and gels show distinct nonlinear viscoelasticity with increasing oscillatory-strain amplitude; the storage modulus decreases monotonically as the strain amplitude increases whereas the loss modulus has a distinct peak before it decreases at larger strains. We present a qualitative argument to explain this ubiquitous behavior and use mode coupling theory (MCT) to confirm it. We compare theoretical predictions to the measured nonlinear viscoelasticity in a dense hard sphere colloidal suspensions; reasonable agreement is obtained. The argument given here can be used to obtain new information about linear viscoelasticity of metastable complex fluids from nonlinear strain measurements.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Europhys. In vivo models of lung neutrophil activation. Comparison of mice and hamsters

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that both the migration and activation of neutrophils into the airway is of importance in pathological conditions such as pulmonary emphysema. In the present study, we describe in vivo models of lung neutrophil infiltration and activation in mice and hamsters. RESULTS: BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice were intranasally treated with lipopolysaccharide (0.3 mg/kg). Twenty-four hours after, animals were treated intranasally with N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe (0 to 5 mg/kg). Golden Syrian hamsters were treated intratracheally with 0.5 mg/kg of lipopolysaccharide. Twenty-four hours after, animals were treated intratracheally with 0.25 mg/kg of N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe. Both mice and hamster were sacrificed two hours after the N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe application. In both BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice, a neutrophil infiltration was observed after the sequential application of lipopolysaccharide and N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe. However, 5 times less neutrophil was found in C57BL/6 mice when compared to BALB/c mice. This was reflected in the neutrophil activation parameters measured (myeloperoxidase and elastase activities). Despite the presence of neutrophil and their activation status, no lung haemorrhage could be detected in both strains of mice. When compared with mice, the lung inflammation induced by the sequential application of lipopolysaccharide and N-Formyl-Met-Leu-Phe was much greater in the hamster. In parallel with this lung inflammation, a significant lung haemorrhage was also observed. CONCLUSIONS: Both mouse and hamster can be used for pharmacological studies of new drugs or other therapeutics agents that aimed to interfere with neutrophil activation. However, only the hamster model seems to be suitable for studying the haemorrhagic lung injury proces

Abrupt changes in alpha decay systematics as a manifestation of collective nuclear modes

An abrupt change in α\alpha decay systematics around the N=126 neutron shell closure is discussed. It is explained as a sudden hindrance of the clustering of the nucleons that eventually form the α\alpha particle. This is because the clustering induced by the pairing mode acting upon the four nucleons is inhibited if the configuration space does not allow a proper manifestation of the pairing collectivity.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Uterus and endometrium: Regeneration processes in rabbit endometrium: a photodynamic therapy model

The origin and process of regeneration in rabbit endo metrium was evaluated following photodynamic epithelial destruction using topically applied anilnolevulinic acid (ALA). Selective destruction of endometrial epithelium was performed using photodynamic therapy (PDT). ALA was diluted to 200 mg/ml dextran 70 shortly prior to adininistra tion. A volume of 1.2 ml was injected into the left uterus. Intrauterine illumination (wavelength 630 nm, light dose 40-80 J/cm2was performed 3 h after drug administration. Tissue morphology was evaluated by light and scanning electron microscopy 1, 3, 7 and 28 days post-treatment (three animals at each dine-point). Regeneration of the endometriwn following epithelial ablation by PDT was fully activated after 24 h and was completed after 72 h. Endometrial surface generation occurred by proliferation, originating primarily in deeper regions of the glands. Findings from our morphological follow-up study support the origin of endometrial regeneration being mainly from undifferentiated stem cells and residual glandular epitheliu

Molecular structure of highly-excited resonant states in 24^{24}Mg and the corresponding 8^8Be+16^{16}O and 12^{12}C+12^{12}C decays

Exotic 8^8Be and 12^{12}C decays from high-lying resonances in 24^{24}Mg are analyzed in terms of a cluster model. The calculated quantities agree well with the corresponding experimental data. It is found that the calculated decay widths are very sensitive to the angular momentum carried by the outgoing cluster. It is shown that this property makes cluster decay a powerful tool to determine the spin as well as the molecular structures of the resonances.Comment: 17 pages, no figur
