    vManagement: Initial Exploration of Management Practice

    For several years, the authors have maintained a simulation (sim) in Second LifeTM, with management responsibility for allocating sim resources across research and instructional projects, some of which involved working with residents. Although not originally anticipated to be a research site in management theory and practice, the project presented an unexpected pattern of difficulty and an unexpectedly rich case study to examine why and how the virtual environment generated norms of power and empowerment for which traditional management practice was not effective. We conducted a theoretical thematic analysis on a body of conversation transcripts, meeting agendas and minutes, email messages and other administrative documents, applying concepts from the literature on presence, copresence, embodiment and social capital, seeking to identify the sociocultural context and structural conditions that shaped meanings and experiences of participants in this project. This exploratory analysis suggests a need for development of management theory and practice based on norms of empowerment shaped by designer-user role hybridization – in short, vManagement

    Dynamic Visual Attention: competitive versus motion priority scheme

    Defined as attentive process in presence of visual sequences, dynamic visual attention responds to static and motion features as well. For a computer model, a straightforward way to integrate these features is to combine all features in a competitive scheme: the saliency map contains a contribution of each feature, static and motion. Another way of integration is to combine the features in a motion priority scheme: in presence of motion, the saliency map is computed as the motion map, and in absence of motion, as the static map. In this paper, four models are considered: two models based on a competitive scheme and two models based on a motion priority scheme. The models are evaluated experimentally by comparing them with respect to the eye movement patterns of human subjects, while viewing a set of video sequences. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations, performed in the context of simple synthetic video sequences, show the highest performance of the motion priority scheme, compared to the competitive scheme

    Fmoc solid phase synthesis of polyamides containing pyrrole and imidazole amino acids

    Polyamides containing N-methylimidazole (Im) and N-methylpyrrole (Py) amino acids are synthetic ligands that have an affinity and specificity for DNA comparable to those of many naturally occurring DNA binding proteins. A machine-assisted Fmoc solid phase synthesis of polyamides has been optimized to afford high stepwise coupling yields (>99%). Two monomer building blocks, Fmoc-Py acid and Fmoc-Im acid, were prepared in multigram scale. Cleavage by aminolysis followed by HPLC purification affords up to 200 mg quantities of polyamide with purities and yields greater than or equal to those reported using Boc chemistry. A broader set of reaction conditions will increase the number and complexity of minor groove binding polyamides which may be prepared and help ensure compatibility with many commercially available peptide synthesizers
