Forced Symmetry Breaking from SO(3) to SO(2) for Rotating Waves on the Sphere
We consider a small SO(2)-equivariant perturbation of a reaction-diffusion
system on the sphere, which is equivariant with respect to the group SO(3) of
all rigid rotations. We consider a normally hyperbolic SO(3)-group orbit of a
rotating wave on the sphere that persists to a normally hyperbolic
SO(2)-invariant manifold . We investigate the effects of this
forced symmetry breaking by studying the perturbed dynamics induced on
by the above reaction-diffusion system. We prove that depending
on the frequency vectors of the rotating waves that form the relative
equilibrium SO(3)u_{0}, these rotating waves will give SO(2)-orbits of rotating
waves or SO(2)-orbits of modulated rotating waves (if some transversality
conditions hold). The orbital stability of these solutions is established as
well. Our main tools are the orbit space reduction, Poincare map and implicit
function theorem
Análisis filogenético de aislamientos de Groundnut ringspot virus desde maní e identificación de posibles trips vectores asociados al cultivo de maní en la Argentina
Groundnut ringspot virus (GRSV), genus Tospovirus, is a thrips-transmitted virus infecting peanuts (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Córdoba province, Argentina. Fourteen viral isolates were recovered from Tospovirus-like symptomatic plants from different peanut fields. Viral isolates as GRSV were identified by serological and molecular tests. Nucleotide and derived amino acid sequence analyses of the nucleocapsid (N) gene indicated a high degree of identity between the GRSV peanut isolates, indicating that there is no molecular variability in the N gene of the GRSV that infects peanuts in the cropping area of Córdoba. In this study, we determined the presence of thrips species in the crop, which can potentially transmit the virus. Thrips were observed in all the evaluated peanut fields. Frankliniella schultzei was the most frequently identified species followed by Caliothrips phaseoli and Frankliniella occidentalis. This work reports the presence of F. schultzei and F. occidentalis in peanuts in Argentina for the first time. These results along with the high degree of similarity between the GRSV peanut isolates suggest that the virus could be transmitted by F. schultzei, which has been cited as its most efficient vector.
Non-universal equilibrium crystal shape results from sticky steps
The anisotropic surface free energy, Andreev surface free energy, and
equilibrium crystal shape (ECS) z=z(x,y) are calculated numerically using a
transfer matrix approach with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG)
method. The adopted surface model is a restricted solid-on-solid (RSOS) model
with "sticky" steps, i.e., steps with a point-contact type attraction between
them (p-RSOS model). By analyzing the results, we obtain a first-order shape
transition on the ECS profile around the (111) facet; and on the curved surface
near the (001) facet edge, we obtain shape exponents having values different
from those of the universal Gruber-Mullins-Pokrovsky-Talapov (GMPT) class. In
order to elucidate the origin of the non-universal shape exponents, we
calculate the slope dependence of the mean step height of "step droplets"
(bound states of steps) using the Monte Carlo method, where p=(dz/dx,
dz/dy)$, and represents the thermal averag |p| dependence of , we
derive a |p|-expanded expression for the non-universal surface free energy
f_{eff}(p), which contains quadratic terms with respect to |p|. The first-order
shape transition and the non-universal shape exponents obtained by the DMRG
calculations are reproduced thermodynamically from the non-universal surface
free energy f_{eff}(p).Comment: 31 pages, 21 figure
Theoretical study of the thermal behavior of free and alumina-supported Fe-C nanoparticles
The thermal behavior of free and alumina-supported iron-carbon nanoparticles
is investigated via molecular dynamics simulations, in which the effect of the
substrate is treated with a simple Morse potential fitted to ab initio data. We
observe that the presence of the substrate raises the melting temperature of
medium and large nanoparticles ( = 0-0.16, = 80-1000, non-
magic numbers) by 40-60 K; it also plays an important role in defining the
ground state of smaller Fe nanoparticles ( = 50-80). The main focus of our
study is the investigation of Fe-C phase diagrams as a function of the
nanoparticle size. We find that as the cluster size decreases in the
1.1-1.6-nm-diameter range the eutectic point shifts significantly not only
toward lower temperatures, as expected from the Gibbs-Thomson law, but also
toward lower concentrations of C. The strong dependence of the maximum C
solubility on the Fe-C cluster size may have important implications for the
catalytic growth of carbon nanotubes by chemical vapor deposition.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, higher quality figures can be seen in article 9

Classical Integrability of the Squashed Three-sphere, Warped AdS3 and Schroedinger Spacetime via T-Duality
We discuss the integrability of 2d non-linear sigma models with target space
being the squashed three-sphere, warped anti-de Sitter space and the
Schroedinger spacetime. These models can be obtained via T-duality from
integrable models. We construct an infinite family of non-local conserved
charges from the T-dual Lax currents, enhancing the symmetry of warped anti-de
Sitter space and the Schroedinger spacetime to sl2(R)+sl2(R).Comment: 29 Pages, 3 appendices. Minor changes: added references, footnot
Detecting Machine-obfuscated Plagiarism
Related dataset is at https://doi.org/10.7302/bewj-qx93 and also listed in the dc.relation field of the full item record.Research on academic integrity has identified online paraphrasing tools as a severe threat to the effectiveness of plagiarism detection systems. To enable the automated identification of machine-paraphrased text, we make three contributions. First, we evaluate the effectiveness of six prominent word embedding models in combination with five classifiers for distinguishing human-written from machine-paraphrased text. The best performing classification approach achieves an accuracy of 99.0% for documents and 83.4% for paragraphs. Second, we show that the best approach outperforms human experts and established plagiarism detection systems for these classification tasks. Third, we provide a Web application that uses the best performing classification approach to indicate whether a text underwent machine-paraphrasing. The data and code of our study are openly available.Peer Reviewedhttps://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/152346/1/Foltynek2020_Paraphrase_Detection.pdfDescription of Foltynek2020_Paraphrase_Detection.pdf : Foltynek2020_Paraphrase_Detectio
Boojums and the Shapes of Domains in Monolayer Films
Domains in Langmuir monolayers support a texture that is the two-dimensional
version of the feature known as a boojum. Such a texture has a quantifiable
effect on the shape of the domain with which it is associated. The most
noticeable consequence is a cusp-like feature on the domain boundary. We report
the results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the shape of a
domain in a Langmuir monolayer. A further aspect of the investigation is the
study of the shape of a ``bubble'' of gas-like phase in such a monolayer. This
structure supports a texture having the form of an inverse boojum. The
distortion of a bubble resulting from this texture is also studied. The
correspondence between theory and experiment, while not perfect, indicates that
a qualitative understanding of the relationship between textures and domain
shapes has been achieved.Comment: replaced with published version, 10 pages, 13 figures include
