    Modeling the pulse signal by wave-shape function and analyzing by synchrosqueezing transform

    We apply the recently developed adaptive non-harmonic model based on the wave-shape function, as well as the time-frequency analysis tool called synchrosqueezing transform (SST) to model and analyze oscillatory physiological signals. To demonstrate how the model and algorithm work, we apply them to study the pulse wave signal. By extracting features called the spectral pulse signature, {and} based on functional regression, we characterize the hemodynamics from the radial pulse wave signals recorded by the sphygmomanometer. Analysis results suggest the potential of the proposed signal processing approach to extract health-related hemodynamics features

    Three novel beta-galactosidase gene mutations in Han Chinese patients with GM1 gangliosidosis are correlated with disease severity

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>GM1 gangliosidosis (GM1) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disease caused by deficiency of acid beta-galactosidase (GLB1; EC3.2.1.23). Here, we identify three novel mutations in the GLB1 gene from two Han Chinese patients with GM1 that appear correlated with clinical phenotype.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One of the two Han Chinese patients with GM1 presented with the juvenile form, and the other with the infantile form with cardiac involvement. Sequencing of the entire GLB1 gene revealed three novel mutations (p.H102 D, p.G494V, c.495_497delTCT), which were absent in 94 normal controls. Transient expression of cDNA encoding these variants was performed in COS-1 cells to evaluate β-galactosidase activities.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The first case (patient 1) with the juvenile form contained two missense mutations, p.H102 D and p.A301V. Patient 2 diagnosed with the infantile form of the disease with cardiac involvement was compound heterozygous for p.G494V and c.495_497delTCT mutations. All mutant beta-galactosidases exhibited significantly reduced activity (12%, 0%, 0%, and 0% for p.H102 D, p.A301V, p.G494V, and c.495_497delTCT), compared with the wild-type beta-galactosidase cDNA clone. The mutations identified in patient 2 with cardiomyopathy were localized in the GLB1 gene region common to both lysosomal beta-galactosidase and elastin binding protein (EBP), and caused a deletion in the elastin-binding domain of EBP.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>All four mutations identified in Han Chinese patients induce significant suppression of β-galactosidase activity, correlating with severity of disease and presence of cardiomyopathy.</p

    Single-pass high-gain tapered free-electron laser with transverse diffraction in the postsaturation regime

    It has been well known that the resonant interaction of an ultrarelativistic electron beam and the radiation field in the single-pass high-gain free electron laser (FEL) amplifier leads to the optical gain guiding. The transverse Laplacian term of the slowly varying wave equation in the linear regime can be approximated as a constant detuning parameter, i.e., vertical bar del(2)(perpendicular to)vertical bar k(R)/z(R) where k(R) is the resonant wave number and z(R) is the Rayleigh range of the laser. In the post-saturation regime, the radiation power begins to oscillate about an equilibrium for the untapered case while continues to grow by undulator tapering. Moreover, in this regime the gain guiding decreases and the simple constant detune is no longer valid. In this paper we study the single-pass high-gain FEL performance in the post-saturation regime with inclusion of diffraction effect and undulator tapering. Our analysis relies upon two constants of motion, one from the energy conservation and the other from the adiabatic invariant of the action variable. By constructing a two-dimensional axisymmetric wave equation and the coupled one-dimensional electron dynamical equations, the performance of a tapered FEL in the postsaturation regime can be analyzed, including the fundamental mode profile, the power efficiency and the scaled energy spread. We begin the analytical investigation with two different axisymmetric electron beam profiles, the uniform and bounded parabolic ones. It is found that the tapered FEL power efficiency can be smaller but close to the taper ratio provided the resonant phase remains constant and the beam-wave is properly matched. Such a tapered efficiency is nearly independent of transverse electron beam size before significant electron detrapping occurs. This is essentially different from the untapered case, where the power extraction efficiency is around the essential FEL gain bandwidth (or rho, the Pierce or FEL parameter) and depends on the beam size. It is also found that the power enhancement due to undulator tapering is attributed more by the field increase outside the transverse electron beam than that inside the transverse electron beam.     The Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is considered to be an improved solution for applying flexible control and operation recently in the network. Its characteristics include centralized management, global view, as well as fast adjustment and adaptation. Many experimental and research networks have already migrated to the SDN-enabled architecture. As the global network continues to grow in a fast pace, how to use SDN to improve the networking fields becomes a popular topic in research. One of the interesting topics is to enable routing exchanges among the SDN-enabled network and production networks. However, considering that many production networks are still operated on legacy architecture, the enabled SDN routing functionalities have to support hybrid mode in operation. In this paper, we propose a routing exchange mechanism by enabling reactive BGP peering actions among the SDN and legacy network components. The results of experiments show that our SDN controller is able to mask as an Autonomous System (AS) to exchange routing information with other BGP routers

    Phase Structure of Kerr-AdS Black Hole

    We study the critical phenomena of Kerr-AdS black hole. Phase structures are observed at different temperatures, TLT_{L}, Tc1T_{c1} and Tc2T_{c2} with various features. We discuss the thermal stability considering the isothermal compressibility and how phase transitions related to each other. The asymptotic value of the angular momentum also has an implication on separating stable and unstable part. Near critical temperature Tc1T_{c1}, the order parameter is determined to calculate the critical exponents. All the critical exponents (ι\alpha,β\beta,γ\gamma,δ\delta)=(0,1/2,1,3) are identical to that of mean field systems.     Chemical Composition and Biological Properties of Essential Oils of Two Mint Species

    Purpose: To analyze the composition of essential oils of two types of mint as well as compare the antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of the two oils.Methods: Peppermint (M. piperita L.) and chocolate mint (M. piperita L.) oils were obtained by steam distillation in a Clevenger-type apparatus. The chemical composition of the essential oils was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the essential oils were determined by broth dilution method. The antioxidant activities of the oils were determined by 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)DPPH radical scavenging assay, β-Carotene-linoleic acid assay, andnitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging assay.Results: The two essential oils contain high levels of alcohol (43.47-50.10%) and terpene (18.55-21.07%) with the major compound being menthol (28.19-30.35%). The antimicrobial activity (minimum inhibitory concentration, MIC) of peppermint oil against E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa (0.15, 0.08, 0.92 %v/v, respectively) was stronger than that of chocolate mint (0.23, 0.09, 1.22 %v/v, respectively). In the anti-oxidant test including DPPH and β-Carotenelinoleic acid assays, peppermint oil showed superior antioxidant properties to chocolate mint oil (4.45 - 19.86 Οl/mL). However, with regard to scavenging NO radical activity, chocolate mint oil exhibited higher activity than peppermint (0.31 and 0.42 Οl/mL, respectively). Chocolate mint oil also exhibited higher anti-inflammatory activity than peppermint oil (0.03 and 0.08 Οl/mL, respectively).Conclusion: The results obtained should help to clarify the functional applications of these folk herbs and their essential oils for aromatherapeutic healing and other folkloric uses.Keywords: Peppermint, Chocolate mint, Anti-microbial, Anti-oxidant, Anti-inflammator
