Spin-Spin Interactions in Gauge Theory of Gravity, Violation of Weak Equivalence Principle and New Classical Test of General Relativity
For a long time, it is generally believed that spin-spin interactions can
only exist in a theory where Lorentz symmetry is gauged, and a theory with
spin-spin interactions is not perturbatively renormalizable. But this is not
true. By studying the motion of a spinning particle in gravitational field, it
is found that there exist spin-spin interactions in gauge theory of gravity.
Its mechanism is that a spinning particle will generate gravitomagnetic field
in space-time, and this gravitomagnetic field will interact with the spin of
another particle, which will cause spin-spin interactions. So, spin-spin
interactions are transmitted by gravitational field. The form of spin-spin
interactions in post Newtonian approximations is deduced. This result can also
be deduced from the Papapetrou equation. This kind of interactions will not
affect the renormalizability of the theory. The spin-spin interactions will
violate the weak equivalence principle, and the violation effects are
detectable. An experiment is proposed to detect the effects of the violation of

Performance of random multiple access transmission system
The performance of the Random Multiple Access (RMA) technique, applied to a direct terminal-to-terminal link with a large number of potential users, is determined. The average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived. Under Gaussian assumption, the approximation of the probability of error is given. The analysis shows that the system performance is affected by the sequence length, the number of simultaneous users, and the number of cochannel symbols, but is not sensitive to the thermal noise. Fighting coal — Effectiveness of coal-replacement programs for residential heating in China: Empirical findings from a household survey
Household fuel substitution has been a crucial step for controlling air pollution in China, but the performance evaluation of household fuel substitution policies is overlooked. This study capitalized on the opportunity to use data collected during the household coal-replacement program in North China to evaluate the effect of a mandatory policy on fuel substitution at the micro-level. The results indicate that there is a significant effect of the coal-replacement program on fuel substitution, as we expected. The coal-to-electricity policy is effective in achieving the goal of a clean winter but not a warm winter due to the decline of delivered energy, while the high-quality coal replacement policy results in better performance in delivered energy but no improvement in indoor air quality. It is recommended to prioritize supporting measures on both the supply and demand sides before implementation, along with undertaking differential measures during the implementation phase to better address energy inequality
SOS-convex Semi-algebraic Programs and its Applications to Robust Optimization: A Tractable Class of Nonsmooth Convex Optimization
In this paper, we introduce a new class of nonsmooth convex functions called
SOS-convex semialgebraic functions extending the recently proposed notion of
SOS-convex polynomials. This class of nonsmooth convex functions covers many
common nonsmooth functions arising in the applications such as the Euclidean
norm, the maximum eigenvalue function and the least squares functions with
-regularization or elastic net regularization used in statistics and
compressed sensing. We show that, under commonly used strict feasibility
conditions, the optimal value and an optimal solution of SOS-convex
semi-algebraic programs can be found by solving a single semi-definite
programming problem (SDP). We achieve the results by using tools from
semi-algebraic geometry, convex-concave minimax theorem and a recently
established Jensen inequality type result for SOS-convex polynomials. As an
application, we outline how the derived results can be applied to show that
robust SOS-convex optimization problems under restricted spectrahedron data
uncertainty enjoy exact SDP relaxations. This extends the existing exact SDP
relaxation result for restricted ellipsoidal data uncertainty and answers the
open questions left in [Optimization Letters 9, 1-18(2015)] on how to recover a
robust solution from the semi-definite programming relaxation in this broader
setting
Comparative study of commercial building energy-efficiency retrofit policies in four pilot cities in China
The energy efficiency of existing commercial buildings is more challenging to regulate and improve than the energy efficiency of new constructions. In 2011 and 2012, the Chinese Government selected four cities- Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, and Chongqing- to implement pilot commercial building energy efficiency retrofit program. Based on site surveys and expert interviews in these pilot cities, this research conducted a comparative analysis on incentive policies of local city level. The analysis results show that policy designs of existing commercial buildings should be further improved. The aspects that influence the implementation effect in the future, such as subsidy level, installments, and business model promotion, should be specified in the policy clauses. Referring to the technical solution and cost-benefit in Chongqing, we found that lighting system is the most common retrofit objects while envelope system is the least common one. And the subsidy incentive is greatest for educational buildings, followed by office buildings. In the end, we further discussed the problems and obstacles in commercial building retrofit market, and provided a series of recommendations

Measures to enforce mandatory civil building energy efficiency codes in China
Mandatory civil building energy efficiency codes strictly govern the energy consumption of new buildings in China. As the promotion of building energy efficiency in China has increased in recent years, compliance with mandatory civil building energy efficiency codes has also improved, increasing from less than 10% in 2000 to nearly 100% in 2012, a remarkable achievement. However, because the promotion of energy efficiency strategies in China has followed a unique pattern, some researchers doubt these statistics. In response to these doubts, this paper summarises and analyses the framework of measures implemented by the Chinese government to enforce mandatory building energy efficiency codes. First, the development and implementation of China's mandatory civil building energy efficiency code system is summarised. Second, the building supervision and inspection systems used to assess energy efficiency are introduced and analysed in detail in order to provide a framework for the development of energy policies in other countries. Third, the assessment and reporting processes used to determine compliance rates are reviewed. Finally, the improvement of compliance rates and its impact on building energy savings in China are discussed. Along with the increase in compliance rates in the construction stage from 71% in 2007 to 100% in 2012, the energy savings of new buildings per increased floor area per year increased from 20.4 kWh/m2 to 28.4 kWh/m2. The supervision and inspection systems reported in this paper are the keys to enforcing building energy efficiency codes
Coulomb drag in double quantum wells with a perpendicular magnetic field
Momentum transfer due to electron-electron interaction (Coulomb drag) between
two quantum wells, separated by a distance , in the presence of a
perpendicular magnetic field, is studied at low temperatures. We find besides
the well known Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations, which also appear in the drag

The inhabited environment, infrastructure development and advanced urbanization in China's Yangtze River Delta Region
This paper analyzes the relationship among the inhabited environment, infrastructure development and environmental impacts in China's heavily urbanized Yangtze River Delta region. Using primary human environment data for the period 2006-2014, we examine factors affecting the inhabited environment and infrastructure development: urban population, GDP, built-up area, energy consumption, waste emission, transportation, real estate and urban greenery. Then we empirically investigate the impact of advanced urbanization with consideration of cities' differences. Results from this study show that the growth rate of the inhabited environment and infrastructure development is strongly influenced by regional development structure, functional orientations, traffic network and urban size and form. The effect of advanced urbanization is more significant in large and mid-size cities than huge and mega cities. Energy consumption, waste emission and real estate in large and mid-size cities developed at an unprecedented rate with the rapid increase of economy. However, urban development of huge and mega cities gradually tended to be saturated. The transition development in these cities improved the inhabited environment and ecological protection instead of the urban construction simply. To maintain a sustainable advanced urbanization process, policy implications included urban sprawl control polices, ecological development mechanisms and reforming the economic structure for huge and mega cities, and construct major cross-regional infrastructure, enhance the carrying capacity and improvement of energy efficiency and structure for large and mid-size cities
Surface-directed spinodal decomposition in the pseudobinary alloy (HfO_2)_x(SiO_2)_{1-x}
Hf silicate films (HfO_2)_{0.25}(SiO_2)_{0.75} with thicknesses in the range
4-20 nm were grown on silicon substrate by atomic layer deposition at 350
deg.C.The Hf distributions in as-grown and 800 deg.C annealed films were
investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM),
angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) and medium energy ion
scattering (MEIS). HRTEM images show a layered structure in films thinner than
8 nm. The ARXPS data also reveal a non-uniform distribution of Hf throughout
the film depth. Diffusion of SiO_2 to the film surface after a longer time
anneal was observed by MEIS. All these observations provide evidence for
surface-directed spinodal decomposition in the pseudobinary
(HfO_2)_x(SiO_2)_{1-x} alloy system.Comment: 1o figures, one tabl
Thermal rectifier from deformed carbon nanohorns
We study thermal rectification in single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) by
using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) method. It is found that the
horns with the bigger top angles show larger asymmetric heat transport due to
the larger structural gradient distribution. This kind of gradient behavior can
be further adjusted by applying external strain on the SWNHs. After being
carefully elongated along the axial direction, the thermal rectification in the
elongated SWNHs can become more obvious than that in undeformed ones. The
maximum rectification efficiency of SWNHs is much bigger than that of carbon
nanotube intramolecular junctions.Comment: 3 figure
