    TIDE: Test Time Few Shot Object Detection

    Few-shot object detection (FSOD) aims to extract semantic knowledge from limited object instances of novel categories within a target domain. Recent advances in FSOD focus on fine-tuning the base model based on a few objects via meta-learning or data augmentation. Despite their success, the majority of them are grounded with parametric readjustment to generalize on novel objects, which face considerable challenges in Industry 5.0, such as (i) a certain amount of fine-tuning time is required, and (ii) the parameters of the constructed model being unavailable due to the privilege protection, making the fine-tuning fail. Such constraints naturally limit its application in scenarios with real-time configuration requirements or within black-box settings. To tackle the challenges mentioned above, we formalize a novel FSOD task, referred to as Test TIme Few Shot DEtection (TIDE), where the model is un-tuned in the configuration procedure. To that end, we introduce an asymmetric architecture for learning a support-instance-guided dynamic category classifier. Further, a cross-attention module and a multi-scale resizer are provided to enhance the model performance. Experimental results on multiple few-shot object detection platforms reveal that the proposed TIDE significantly outperforms existing contemporary methods.     Bartter syndrome type III with glomerular dysplasia and chronic kidney disease: A case report

    BackgroundBartter syndrome (BS) type III is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disease. Its clinical features are polyuria, hypokalemia, hypochloremia, metabolic alkalosis, and hyperreninaemia. A few BS type III can be complicated with chronic kidney disease.Case presentationWe report a 14-year-old boy with Bartter syndrome caused by a c.1792C > T (p.Q598*) mutation in the CLCNKB gene. He was a no deafness and full-term baby, and he had renal dysplasia and chronic kidney disease (CKD). In addition, we summarize all cases of BS type III complicated with CKD.ConclusionsWe report a case of Bartter syndrome complicated by chronic kidney disease caused by a new mutation of CLCNKB. As we all know, BS type IV is usually combined with chronic kidney disease, and BS type III can also integrate with CKD. We don't find BS type III with glomerular dysplasia in the literature. So renal damage in BS type III is not only FSGS; clinicians must also be aware of glomerular dysplasia

    A universal interatomic potential for perovskite oxides

    With their celebrated structural and chemical flexibility, perovskite oxides have served as a highly adaptable material platform for exploring emergent phenomena arising from the interplay between different degrees of freedom. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations leveraging classical force fields, commonly depicted as parameterized analytical functions, have made significant contributions in elucidating the atomistic dynamics and structural properties of crystalline solids including perovskite oxides. However, the force fields currently available for solids are rather specific and offer limited transferability, making it time-consuming to use MD to study new materials systems since a new force field must be parameterized and tested first. The lack of a generalized force field applicable to a broad spectrum of solid materials hinders the facile deployment of MD in computer-aided materials discovery (CAMD). Here, by utilizing a deep-neural network with a self-attention scheme, we have developed a unified force field that enables MD simulations of perovskite oxides involving 14 metal elements and conceivably their solid solutions with arbitrary compositions. Notably, isobaric-isothermal ensemble MD simulations with this model potential accurately predict the experimental phase transition sequences for several markedly different ferroelectric oxides, including a 6-element ternary solid solution, Pb(In1/2_{1/2}Nb1/2_{1/2})O3_3--Pb(Mg1/3_{1/3}Nb2/3_{2/3})O3_3--PbTiO3_3. We believe the universal interatomic potential along with the training database, proposed regression tests, and the auto-testing workflow, all released publicly, will pave the way for a systematic improvement and extension of a unified force field for solids, potentially heralding a new era in CAMD.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Genetic and phenotypic links between obesity and extracellular vesicles

    Obesity has a highly complex genetic architecture, making it difficult to understand the genetic mechanisms, despite the large number of discovered loci via genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Omics techniques have provided a better resolution to view this problem. As a proxy of cell-level biology, extracellular vesicles (EVs) are useful for studying cellular regulation of complex phenotypes such as obesity. Here, in a well-established Scottish cohort, we utilized a novel technology to detect surface proteins across millions of single EVs in each individual’s plasma sample. Integrating the results with established obesity GWAS, we inferred 78 types of EVs carrying one or two of 12 surface proteins to be associated with adiposity-related traits such as waist circumference. We then verified that particular EVs’ abundance is negatively correlated with body adiposity, while no association with lean body mass. We also revealed that genetic variants associated with protein-specific EVs capture 2–4-fold heritability enrichment for blood cholesterol levels. Our findings provide evidence that EVs with specific surface proteins have phenotypic and genetic links to obesity and blood lipids, respectively, guiding future EV biomarker research

    Symptoms of problematic pornography use among help-seeking male adolescents: Latent profile and network analysis

    Background and aims: Little data exist on exploring the subgroups and characteristics of problematic pornography use (PPU) in help-seeking adolescents. The aims of the study were to classify the subgroups among help-seeking male adolescents, explore their similarities and differences, and uncover their core symptoms. Methods: A total of 3,468 Chinese male adolescents (Mage 5 16.64 years, SD 5 1.24) who were distressed about their pornography use were recruited. The Problematic Pornography Consumption Scale, the Brief Pornography Screen Scale, and Moral Disapproval of Pornography Use were used to classify them. The General Health Questionnaire, the Pornography Craving Questionnaire, and the Sexual Compulsivity Scale were used to investigate participants’ negative consequence related to their pornography use; and the Online Sexual Activity Questionnaire (OSAs) and time spent on pornography use every week were considered as quantitative indicators. Results: Help-seeking male adolescents could be divided into 3 profiles, namely, self-perceived problematic (SP, n 5 755), impaired control (IC, n 5 1,656), and problematic use groups (PPU, n 5 1,057). Frequency of OSAs was important for the identification of SP individuals, while negative consequences were more effective in identifying individuals with objective dysregulated behavior. Salience and mood modification were shared by all groups; however, in addition to this, the SP and PPU groups also showed withdrawal symptoms. Discussion and conclusion: This study’s results provide support for the presence of different profiles of help-seeking individuals and information on potential intervention targets among adolescents which is lacking in the literature

    Taxifolin protects rat against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury by modulating the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway

    Background Taxifolin (TAX), is an active flavonoid, that plays an underlying protective role on the cardiovascular system. This study aimed to evaluate its effect and potential mechanisms on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Methods Healthy rat heart was subjected to I/R using the Langendorff apparatus. Hemodynamic parameters, including heart rate, left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP), maximum/minimum rate of the left ventricular pressure rise (+dp/dtmax and −dp/dtmin) and rate pressure product (RPP) were recorded during the perfusion. Histopathological examination of left ventricular was measured by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining. Creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities in the effluent perfusion, and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) in the tissue were assayed. Apoptosis related proteins, such as B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2), Bcl2-associated X (Bax), and cytochrome c (Cyt-c) were also assayed by ELISA. Western blot was employed to determine apoptosis-executive proteins, including caspase 3 and 9. Transferase-mediated dUTP-X nick end labeling assay was performed to evaluate the effect TAX on myocardial apoptosis. Results Taxifolin significantly improved the ventricular functional recovery, as evident by the increase in LVDP, +dp/dtmax, −dp/dtmin and RPP, the levels of SOD, GSH-PX were also increased, but those of LDH, CK-MB, and MDA were decreased. Furthermore, TAX up-regulated the Bcl-2 protein level but down-regulated the levels of Bax, Cyt-c, caspase 3 and 9 protein, thereby inhibits the myocardial apoptosis. Discussion Taxifolin treatment remarkably improved the cardiac function, regulated oxidative stress and attenuated apoptosis. Hence, TAX has a cardioprotective effect against I/R injury by modulating mitochondrial apoptosis pathway

    Over-expression of a gamma-tocopherol methyltransferase gene in vitamin E pathway confers PEG-simulated drought tolerance in alfalfa

    α-Tocopherol is one of the most important vitamin E components present in plant. α-Tocopherol is a potent antioxidant, which can deactivate photoproduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and prevent lipids from oxidation when plants suffer drought stress. γ-Tocopherol methyltransferase (γ-TMT) catalyzes the formation of α-tocopherol in the tocopherol biosynthetic pathway. Our previous studies showed that over-expression of γ-TMT gene can increase the accumulation of α-tocopherol in alfalfa (Medicago sativa).     Construction and validation of a deterioration model for elderly COVID-19 Sub-variant BA.2 patients

    RationaleCOVID-19 pandemic has imposed tremendous stress and burden on the economy and society worldwide. There is an urgent demand to find a new model to estimate the deterioration of patients inflicted by Omicron variants.ObjectiveThis study aims to develop a model to predict the deterioration of elderly patients inflicted by Omicron Sub-variant BA.2.MethodsCOVID-19 patients were randomly divided into the training and the validation cohorts. Both Lasso and Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify prediction factors, which were then selected to build a deterioration model in the training cohort. This model was validated in the validation cohort.Measurements and main resultsThe deterioration model of COVID-19 was constructed with five indices, including C-reactive protein, neutrophil count/lymphocyte count (NLR), albumin/globulin ratio (A/G), international normalized ratio (INR), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The area under the ROC curve (AUC) showed that this model displayed a high accuracy in predicting deterioration, which was 0.85 in the training cohort and 0.85 in the validation cohort. The nomogram provided an easy way to calculate the possibility of deterioration, and the decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve analysis (CICA)showed good clinical net profit using this model.ConclusionThe model we constructed can identify and predict the risk of deterioration (requirement for ventilatory support or death) in elderly patients and it is clinically practical, which will facilitate medical decision making and allocating medical resources to those with critical conditions

    C-reactive protein to lymphocyte ratio is a significant predictive factor for poor short-term clinical outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.2 patients

    ObjectiveThe aim of the present study is to assess the utility of C-reactive protein to Lymphocyte Ratio (CLR) in predicting short-term clinical outcomes of patients infected by SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.2.MethodsThis retrospective study was performed on 1,219 patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.2 to determine the association of CLR with short-term clinical outcomes. Independent Chi square test, Rank sum test, and binary logistic regression analysis were performed to calculate mean differences and adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with their 95% CI, respectively.ResultsOver 8% of patients admitted due to SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.2. were critically ill. The best cut-off value of CLR was 21.25 in the ROC with a sensitivity of 72.3% and a specificity of 86%. After adjusting age, gender, and comorbidities, binary logistic regression analysis showed that elevated CLR was an independent risk factor for poor short-term clinical outcomes of COVID-19 patients.ConclusionC-reactive protein to Lymphocyte Ratio is a significant predictive factor for poor short-term clinical outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 BA.2.2 inflicted patients
