    Dimensional change of wool fabrics in the process of a tumble-drying cycle

The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Currently domestic tumble dryers are popularly used for drying garments; however, excessive drying and the inappropriate way of tumble agitation could waste energy and cause damage to or the dimensional change of garments. Shrinkage of wool fabrics during tumble drying causes a serious problem for wool garments. The current study investigated the shrinkage of untreated and Chlorine-Hercosett–finished wool fabrics at different drying times. Temperature of air in the tumble dryer, temperature of fabric, moisture content of fabric, and dimensional change at different drying times were measured. For the duration of the tumble drying, the rise of fabric temperature and the reduction of moisture content on the wool fabric were investigated to explore their relationship to the shrinkage of wool fabrics in the tumble-drying cycle. It was found that the tumble-drying process can be divided into different stages according to the temperature change trend of wool fabrics. The shrinkage mechanisms of the untreated and the treated fabrics were different. The dimensional change of untreated wool fabric was caused mainly by felting shrinkage during tumble drying. Chlorine-Hercosett–finished wool fabric can withstand the tumble-drying process without noticeable felting shrinkage due to the surface modification and resin coating of surface scales of wool fibers. The finding from the current research provides further understanding of the shrinkage behavior of wool fabrics during the tumble-drying process, leading to optimizing operational parameters at specific stages of a tumble-drying cycle

    Humidity Sensitivity of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Networks Deposited by Dielectrophoresis

    This paper presents an investigation on the humidity sensitivity of deposited multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) networks using ac dielectrophoresis (DEP) between interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). MWCNTs dispersed in ethanol were trapped and enriched between IDEs on a Si/SiO2 substrate under a positive DEP force. After the DEP process, the ethanol was evaporated and the MWCNT network on a substrate with IDEs was put into a furnace for repeated thermal annealing. It was found that the resistance stability of the network was effectively improved through thermal annealing. The humidity sensitivity was obtained by measuring the resistance of the MWCNT network with different relative humidity at room temperature. The experimental results show the resistance increases linearly with increasing the relative humidity from 25% to 95% RH with a sensitivity of 0.5%/%RH. The MWCNT networks have a reversible humidity sensing capacity with response time and recovery time of about 3 s and 25 s, respectively. The resistance is dependent on temperature with a negative coefficient of about −0.33%/K in a temperature range from 293 K to 393 K

    Perioperative immunotherapy for stage II-III non-small cell lung cancer: a meta-analysis base on randomized controlled trials

    BackgroundIn recent years, we have observed the pivotal role of immunotherapy in improving survival for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the effectiveness of immunotherapy in the perioperative (neoadjuvant + adjuvant) treatment of resectable NSCLC remains uncertain. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of its antitumor efficacy and adverse effects (AEs) by pooling data from the KEYNOTE-671, NADIM II, and AEGEAN clinical trials.MethodsFor eligible studies, we searched seven databases. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) pertaining to the comparative analysis of combination neoadjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus perioperative immunotherapy (PIO) versus perioperative placebo (PP) were included. Primary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS). Secondary endpoints encompassed drug responses, AEs, and surgical outcomes.ResultsThree RCTs (KEYNOTE-671, NADIM II, and AEGEAN) were included in the final analysis. PIO group (neoadjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus perioperative immunotherapy) exhibited superior efficacy in OS (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.63 [0.49-0.81]), EFS (HR: 0.61 [0.52, 0.72]), objective response rate (risk ratio [RR]: 2.21 [1.91, 2.54]), pathological complete response (RR: 4.36 [3.04, 6.25]), major pathological response (RR: 2.79 [2.25, 3.46]), R0 resection rate (RR: 1.13 [1.00, 1.26]) and rate of adjuvant treatment (RR: 1.08 [1.01, 1.15]) compared with PP group (neoadjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus perioperative placebo). In the subgroup analysis, EFS tended to favor the PIO group in almost all subgroups. BMI (>25), T stage (IV), N stage (N1-N2) and pathological response (with pathological complete response) were favorable factors in the PIO group. In the safety assessment, the PIO group exhibited higher rates of serious AEs (28.96% vs. 23.51%) and AEs leading to treatment discontinuation (12.84% vs. 5.81%). Meanwhile, although total adverse events, grade 3-5 adverse events, and fatal adverse events tended to favor the PP group, the differences were not statistically significant.ConclusionPIO appears to be superior to PP for resectable stage II-III NSCLC, demonstrating enhanced survival and pathological responses.     Investigation of fabric movement in a tumble dryer for the development of drying method for wool fabrics to save energy

In order to dry wool fabrics or garments in tumble dryers, flat dry function has been introduced in the dryers, however the energy efficiency is very low. The current study investigated the fabric movement at different rotation speeds in the tumble dryer and their resultant performances in terms of specific moisture extraction rate (SMER), evenness of drying, fabric shrinkage, and fabric smoothness. For shrink-resist treated wool fabrics, tumble drying at the rotation speed to keep fabric movement in projectile motion accompanied with tumbling occasionally could achieve better energy efficiency, drying uniformity and fabric smoothness. For untreated wool fabrics, introducing vertical movement to the flat dry in the tumble dryer can improve the heat exchange between the fabric and hot air, resulting in the increase of energy-efficiency by approximate 30% than flat drying motionlessly. Wool fabric shrinkage can be controlled to be less than 2% with the smooth appearance of fabric at grade 3.5 after drying under the recommended drying condition. This study could help tumble dryer manufacturers design optimal drying methods for wool fabrics with the potential for the reduction of energy consumption

    Effect of rs1344706 in the ZNF804A gene on the brain network.

    ZNF804A rs1344706 (A/C) was the first SNP that reached genome-wide significance for schizophrenia. Recent studies have linked rs1344706 to functional connectivity among specific brain regions. However, no study thus far has examined the role of this SNP in the entire functional connectome. In this study, we used degree centrality to test the role of rs1344706 in the whole-brain voxel-wise functional connectome during the resting state. 52 schizophrenia patients and 128 healthy controls were included in the final analysis. In our whole-brain analysis, we found a significant interaction effect of genotype × diagnosis at the precuneus (PCU) (cluster size = 52 voxels, peak voxel MNI coordinates: x = 9, y = - 69, z = 63, F = 32.57, FWE corrected P < 0.001). When we subdivided the degree centrality network according to anatomical distance, the whole-brain analysis also found a significant interaction effect of genotype × diagnosis at the PCU with the same peak in the short-range degree centrality network (cluster size = 72 voxels, F = 37.29, FWE corrected P < 0.001). No significant result was found in the long-range degree centrality network. Our results elucidated the contribution of rs1344706 to functional connectivity within the brain network, and may have important implications for our understanding of this risk gene's role in functional dysconnectivity in schizophrenia

    Reversible splenial lesion syndrome in children: a retrospective study of 130 cases

    BackgroundReversible splenial lesion syndrome (RESLES) is a new clinico-radiological syndrome. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical features of 130 children with RESLES in China, which is the largest case series available in the literature.MethodsThe clinical data of children diagnosed as RESLES in Jiangxi Provincial Children's Hospital between 2017 and 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The 130 cases were divided into two groups: ≤ 3 years old group (group A) (n = 83) and > 3 years old group (group B) (n = 47). The chi-squared test or Fisher's test was used to evaluate the data.ResultsThe vast majority of patients (127/130 cases, 97.7%) had prodromal symptoms of infection. Preceding infections of the gastrointestinal tract were statistically more significant in group A (60/83, 72.3%) than in group B (11/47, 23.4%) (P < 0.05). Preceding infections of the respiratory tract were statistically more significant in group B (33/47, 70.2%) than in group A (17/83, 20.5%) (P < 0.05). Seizures were statistically more significant in group A (82/83, 98.8%) than in group B (24/47,51.1%) (P < 0.05). The disturbance of consciousness and headache/dizziness were statistically more significant in group B (27/47, 57.4%; 37/47, 78.7%) than in group A (3/83, 3.6%; 1/83, 1.2%), respectively (P < 0.05). Convulsions with mild gastroenteritis (CwG) were statistically more significant in group A (50/83, 60.2%) than in group B (8/47, 17.0%) (P < 0.05). However, encephalitis/encephalopathy was statistically more significant in group B (20/47, 42.6%) than in group A (10/83, 12.0%) (P < 0.05). MRI showed cytotoxic edema in typical locations (RESLES type-1 limited to the splenium of the corpus callosum and RESLES type-2 spread to the entire corpus callosum, adjacent white matter, or both). There was full recovery of the lesions of MRI in all cases from 3 days to 50 days after the initial examinations. All the children showed normal neurodevelopment.ConclusionInfection was the most common cause of RESLES. Infections of the gastrointestinal tract are common in ≤ 3 years old children, while infections of the respiratory tract are common in >3 years old children. Younger patients are more likely to develop convulsions, and older children were more likely to have symptoms with disturbance of consciousness and headache/dizziness. RESLES has characteristic MRI manifestations and a good prognosis

    Large-scale prediction of long non-coding RNA functions in a coding–non-coding gene co-expression network

    Although accumulating evidence has provided insight into the various functions of long-non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), the exact functions of the majority of such transcripts are still unknown. Here, we report the first computational annotation of lncRNA functions based on public microarray expression profiles. A coding–non-coding gene co-expression (CNC) network was constructed from re-annotated Affymetrix Mouse Genome Array data. Probable functions for altogether 340 lncRNAs were predicted based on topological or other network characteristics, such as module sharing, association with network hubs and combinations of co-expression and genomic adjacency. The functions annotated to the lncRNAs mainly involve organ or tissue development (e.g. neuron, eye and muscle development), cellular transport (e.g. neuronal transport and sodium ion, acid or lipid transport) or metabolic processes (e.g. involving macromolecules, phosphocreatine and tyrosine)

    Identifying Schistosoma japonicum Excretory/Secretory Proteins and Their Interactions with Host Immune System

    Schistosoma japonicum is a major infectious agent of schistosomiasis. It has been reported that large number of proteins excreted and secreted by S. japonicum during its life cycle are important for its infection and survival in definitive hosts. These proteins can be used as ideal candidates for vaccines or drug targets. In this work, we analyzed the protein sequences of S. japonicum and found that compared with other proteins in S. japonicum, excretory/secretory (ES) proteins are generally longer, more likely to be stable and enzyme, more likely to contain immune-related binding peptides and more likely to be involved in regulation and metabolism processes. Based on the sequence difference between ES and non-ES proteins, we trained a support vector machine (SVM) with much higher accuracy than existing approaches. Using this SVM, we identified 191 new ES proteins in S. japonicum, and further predicted 7 potential interactions between these ES proteins and human immune proteins. Our results are useful to understand the pathogenesis of schistosomiasis and can serve as a new resource for vaccine or drug targets discovery for anti-schistosome

    Textiles industrial water footprint: methodology and study

    710-715The concept of water footprint (WF) is an important breakthrough in the evolving of methodologies, approaches and indicators for measuring freshwater appropriation and assessing the wastewater discharge. Industrial water footprint (IWF) methodology, which concentrates on the industrial production stages, can present a clear graphic of freshwater consumption and impacts caused by wastewater discharge at both product and technology level. In this paper, IWFs of seven kinds of knitted fabrics were calculated through field survey and referred to published literatures. These case studies revealed that the majority of the IWFs were caused by grey industrial water footprints, the volume of water required to dilute pollutants. Dyeing, bleaching and washing were freshwater intensive technologies. Generally this may be one of the typical features of dyed and finished fabrics. It is meaningful to reduce the freshwater consumption of the hot-spots through the improvement of freshwater management pattern and production techniques. Specific recommendations for further research in this field were also proposed in this study accordingly
