A digital library of language learning exercises
Recent years have seen widespread adoption of the Internet for language teaching and learning. Interactive systems on the World-Wide Web provide useful alternatives to face-to-face tuition, and both teachers and learners can benefit from the exercises available. However, although there is a wealth of suitable material, it is hard to find because it is scattered around the web. Moreover, teachers are restricted by the material that is available, and cannot provide their own.
To tackle these problems we have constructed a digital library of language learning exercises that presents students with different kinds of exercise, and also lets teachers contribute new material. We first reviewed existing language learning systems on the web in order to develop a taxonomy of exercise types used for language activity. A prototype, ELLE, based on this taxonomy, provides various kinds of interactive exercises using material that teachers submit. The system has been evaluated by practicing language teachers
Structural Studies on a Mitochondrial Glyoxalase II
Glyoxalase 2 is a β-lactamase fold-containing enzyme that appears to be involved with cellular chemical detoxification. Although the cytoplasmic isozyme has been characterized from several organisms, essentially nothing is known about the mitochondrial proteins. As a first step in understanding the structure and function of mitochondrial glyoxalase 2 enzymes, a mitochondrial isozyme (GLX2-5) from Arabidopsis thaliana was cloned, overexpressed, purified, and characterized using metal analyses, EPR and 1H NMR spectroscopies, and x-ray crystallography. The recombinant enzyme was shown to bind 1.04 ± 0.15 eq of iron and 1.31 ± 0.05 eq of Zn(II) and to exhibit kcat and Km values of 129 ± 10 s-1 and 391 ± 48 μm, respectively, when using S-d-lactoylglutathione as the substrate. EPR spectra revealed that recombinant GLX2-5 contains multiple metal centers, including a predominant Fe(III)Z-n(II) center and an anti-ferromagnetically coupled Fe(III)Fe(II) center. Unlike cytosolic glyoxalase 2 from A. thaliana, GLX2-5 does not appear to specifically bind manganese. 1H NMR spectra revealed the presence of at least eight paramagnetically shifted resonances that arise from protons in close proximity to a Fe(III)Fe(II) center. Five of these resonances arose from solvent-exchangeable protons, and four of these have been assigned to NH protons on metal-bound histidines. A 1.74-Å resolution crystal structure of the enzyme revealed that although GLX2-5 shares a number of structural features with human GLX2, several important differences exist. These data demonstrate that mitochondrial glyoxalase 2 can accommodate a number of different metal centers and that the predominant metal center is Fe(III)Zn(II)
Factors Associated with Immunization Opinion Leadership among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Los Angeles, California
We sought to identify the characteristics of men who have sex with men (MSM) who are opinion leaders on immunization issues and to identify potential opportunities to leverage their influence for vaccine promotion within MSM communities. Using venue-based sampling, we recruited and enrolled MSM living in Los Angeles (N = 520) from December 2016 to February 2017 and evaluated characteristic differences in sociodemographic characteristics, health behaviors, and technology use among those classified as opinion leaders versus those who were not. We also asked respondents about their past receipt of meningococcal serogroups A, C, W, and Y (MenACWY) and meningococcal B (MenB) vaccines, as well as their opinions on the importance of 13 additional vaccines. Multivariable results revealed that non-Hispanic black (aOR = 2.64; 95% CI: 1.17–5.95) and other race/ethnicity (aOR = 2.98; 95% CI: 1.41–6.29) respondents, as well as those with a history of an STI other than HIV (aOR = 1.95; 95% CI: 1.10–3.48), were more likely to be opinion leaders. MenACWY (aOR = 1.92; 95% CI: 1.13–3.25) and MenB (aOR = 3.09; 95% CI: 1.77–5.41) vaccine uptake, and perceived importance for these and seven additional vaccines, were also associated with being an opinion leader. The results suggest that the co-promotion of vaccination and other health promotion initiatives via opinion leaders could be a useful strategy for increasing vaccination among MSM
Be Selfish, But Wisely: Investigating the Impact of Agent Personality in Mixed-Motive Human-Agent Interactions
A natural way to design a negotiation dialogue system is via self-play RL:
train an agent that learns to maximize its performance by interacting with a
simulated user that has been designed to imitate human-human dialogue data.
Although this procedure has been adopted in prior work, we find that it results
in a fundamentally flawed system that fails to learn the value of compromise in
a negotiation, which can often lead to no agreements (i.e., the partner walking
away without a deal), ultimately hurting the model's overall performance. We
investigate this observation in the context of the DealOrNoDeal task, a
multi-issue negotiation over books, hats, and balls. Grounded in negotiation
theory from Economics, we modify the training procedure in two novel ways to
design agents with diverse personalities and analyze their performance with
human partners. We find that although both techniques show promise, a selfish
agent, which maximizes its own performance while also avoiding walkaways,
performs superior to other variants by implicitly learning to generate value
for both itself and the negotiation partner. We discuss the implications of our
findings for what it means to be a successful negotiation dialogue system and

Imaging anomalous nematic order and strain in optimally doped BaFe(As,P)
We present the strain and temperature dependence of an anomalous nematic
phase in optimally doped BaFe(As,P). Polarized ultrafast optical
measurements reveal broken 4-fold rotational symmetry in a temperature range
above in which bulk probes do not detect a phase transition. Using
ultrafast microscopy, we find that the magnitude and sign of this nematicity
vary on a m length scale, and the temperature at which it
onsets ranges from 40 K near a domain boundary to 60 K deep within a domain.
Scanning Laue microdiffraction maps of local strain at room temperature
indicate that the nematic order appears most strongly in regions of weak,
isotropic strain. These results indicate that nematic order arises in a genuine
phase transition rather than by enhancement of local anisotropy by a strong
nematic susceptibility. We interpret our results in the context of a proposed
surface nematic phase

Sliding mode control of quantum systems
This paper proposes a new robust control method for quantum systems with
uncertainties involving sliding mode control (SMC). Sliding mode control is a
widely used approach in classical control theory and industrial applications.
We show that SMC is also a useful method for robust control of quantum systems.
In this paper, we define two specific classes of sliding modes (i.e.,
eigenstates and state subspaces) and propose two novel methods combining
unitary control and periodic projective measurements for the design of quantum
sliding mode control systems. Two examples including a two-level system and a
three-level system are presented to demonstrate the proposed SMC method. One of
main features of the proposed method is that the designed control laws can
guarantee desired control performance in the presence of uncertainties in the
system Hamiltonian. This sliding mode control approach provides a useful
control theoretic tool for robust quantum information processing with

Prostate Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Barbados, West Indies
We describe prostate cancer incidence and mortality in Barbados, West Indies. We ascertained all histologically confirmed cases of prostate cancer during the period July 2002 to December 2008 and reviewed each death registration citing prostate cancer over a 14-year period commencing January 1995. There were 1101 new cases for an incidence rate of 160.4 (95% Confidence Interval: 151.0–170.2) per 100,000 standardized to the US population. Comparable rates in African-American and White American men were 248.2 (95% CI: 246.0–250.5) and 158.0 (95% CI: 157.5–158.6) per 100,000, respectively. Prostate cancer mortality rates in Barbados ranged from 63.2 to 101.6 per 100,000, compared to 51.1 to 78.8 per 100,000 among African Americans. Prostate cancer risks are lower in Caribbean-origin populations than previously believed, while mortality rates appeared to be higher than reported in African-American men. Studies in Caribbean populations may assist understanding of disparities among African-origin populations with shared heredity
