    Urban education differentiation and its socio-economic consequences: An internet–survey-based structural equations modeling analysis of new white collar workers in Nanjing, China

    Increasing education differentiation and its social consequences, that is, the way in which urban education stratification has shaped the socio-economic outcomes, are an understudied area of research on China’s higher education and its relation with social stratification and social mobility. This article examines this relationship by focusing on a specific social group whom we term as “new white collar workers” (NWCWs) in China. Our research reveals a strong correlation between the individuals’ position in a stratified educational system on the one hand, and their professional development trajectory, income and social status differentiation on the other. The article argues that educational differentiation has considerably contributed to the varied pathways and profiles of the NWCWs with regard to career development, income levels and living conditions, and that in the market-reform era, young people’s education attainment and social advancement have become increasingly determined by their family background, especially parental wealth. The policy implications of the research are discussed

    The effects of sovereign rating drifts on financial return distributions: Evidence from the European Union

    We develop a framework that allows a multivariate system of long memory processes to be conditional on specific regimes to investigate the effects of credit rating agencies' (CRAs) sovereign credit re-ratings on European stock and currency return distributions over the period from 1996 to 2012. We find evidence across rating regimes to support the usefulness of our proposed model in accommodating both long memory and regime switching features. Furthermore, we reveal that the total effects (both direct and indirect forces) of sovereign credit assessments on the first four realized moments of return distributions can be different to their direct effects on individual moments. Thus, we find the rank orders among the three major CRAs to differ for each realized moment and asset market. © 2013 Elsevier Inc

    How does trading volume affect financial return distributions?

We assess investors' reaction to new information arrivals in financial markets by examining the relationships between trading volume and the higher moments of returns in 18 international equity and currency markets. Our volume-volatility results support extant information theories and further contribute new evidence of cross market relations between volume and volatility. We also find that the direct impact of volume on the level of negative skewness is less significant for more diversified regional portfolios. Furthermore, the negative interaction between volume and kurtosis can be explained by the differences of opinion in financial markets. We observe stronger interdependence among higher moments in reaction to significant events, but the strength is dampened by trading volume. This result is consistent with trading volume being a source of heteroskedasticity in asset returns

    Elevated blood pressure aggravates intracerebral hemorrhage-induced brain injury

    Elevated blood pressure (BP) is commonly seen in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and is independently associated with poor functional outcomes. Little is known about how elevated BP influences ICH-related brain injury. In the present study, we investigated the physiological and brain histological changes, as well as functional recovery following ICH in renovascular hypertensive rats. Renovascular hypertension (RVHT) was achieved by applying a silver clip onto the left renal artery of adult Sprague-Dawley rats. ICH was induced by an intrastriatal injection of bacterial collagenase IV about 5-6 weeks after left renal artery clipping or the sham operation. Following induction of ICH, both the normotensive and RVHT rats demonstrated an ultra-acute elevation in BP. Elevated BP increased hematoma volume, brain swelling, and apoptosis in the perihematomal areas. Brain degeneration, including local atrophy and lateral ventricle enlargement, was greater in the RVHT rats. In addition, many proliferating cells were seen over the ipsilateral striatum in the RVHT rats after ICH. The modified limb placing tests were done weekly for 3 weeks. In line with the histological damage, elevated BP worsened neurological deficits. These results suggest that ICH in the hypertensive rats mimics the clinical scenario of hypertensive ICH and may provide a platform to study the mechanisms of ICH-induced brain injury and potential therapies for ICH. © 2011, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.published_or_final_versio

    Early detection of neurodegeneration in brain ischemia by manganese-enhanced MRI

    This study aims to employ in vivo manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) to detect neurodegenerative changes in two models of brain ischemia, photothrombotic cortical injury (PCI) and transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rodents. After systemic Mn 2+ injection to both ischemic models, a close pattern of Tl-weighted hyperintensity was observed throughout different brain regions in comparison to the distribution of GFAP, MnSOD and GS immunoreactivities, whereby conventional MRI could hardly detect such. In addition, the infarct volumes in the posterior parts of the brain had significantly reduced after Mn 2+ injection to the MCAO model. It is suggested that exogenous Mn 2+ injection may provide enhanced MEMRI detection of oxidative stress and gliosis early after brain ischemia.     Anti-Tumor Effect of Cactus Polysaccharides on Lung Squamous Carcinoma Cells (SK-MES-1)

    Background: Cactus polysaccharides are the active components of Opuntia dillenii which have been used extensively in folk medicine. In thisstudy, we investigate the anti-tumor effect of cactus polysaccharides on lung squamous carcinoma cells SK-MES-1.Materials and Methods: The inhibitory effect of Cactus polysaccharides on lung squamous carcinoma cells were detected by MTT assay. Cellcycle was determined by flow cytometry and cell apoptosis was determined by AnnexinV assay. Western-blotting was applied to detect P53 andPTEN protein expression in the cells treated with cactus polysaccharides.Results: Results showed that different concentrations of wild cactus polysaccharides prevent SK-MES-1 cells growth and induces S phase arrest.The data also revealed that cactus polysaccharides cause apoptosis in SK-MES-1 cells determined by Annexin-V assay.     Mass recalibration for desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging using endogenous reference ions

    Abstract Background Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) data often consist of tens of thousands of mass spectra collected from a sample surface. During the time necessary to perform a single acquisition, it is likely that uncontrollable factors alter the validity of the initial mass calibration of the instrument, resulting in mass errors of magnitude significantly larger than their theoretical values. This phenomenon has a two-fold detrimental effect: (a) it reduces the ability to interpret the results based on the observed signals, (b) it can affect the quality of the observed signal spatial distributions. Results We present a post-acquisition computational method capable of reducing the observed mass drift by up to 60 ppm in biological samples, exploiting the presence of typical molecules with a known mass-to-charge ratio. The procedure, tested on time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectrometry analyzers interfaced to a desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) source, improves the molecular annotation quality and the spatial distributions of the detected ions. Conclusion The presented method represents a robust and accurate tool for performing post-acquisition mass recalibration of DESI-MSI datasets and can help to increase the reliability of the molecular assignment and the data quality. </jats:sec
