System, Device, and Method for Determination of Intraocular Pressure
A system for determination of intraocular pressure includes: an intraocular pressure sensor; a light source illuminating the sensor with one or more wavelengths of light; and a detector that measures emitted light from the sensor. The sensor includes a substrate member, a spacer member, and a flexible membrane, which define a sealed cavity. The flexible membrane moves in response to intraocular pressure changes. A device for measuring intraocular pressure includes: the sensor; an anchoring member attached to the sensor for immobilizing the sensor in an eye; and a protective member attached to the anchoring member and covering the sensor to prevent contact between the flexible membrane and the eye. A method for determination of intraocular pressure includes: placing the sensor in an eye; illuminating, with a light source, the sensor with one or more wavelengths of light; and detecting, with a detector, a resultant light that contains information about intraocular pressure
Increased reticulocytosis during infancy is associated with increased hospitalizations in sickle cell anemia patients during the first three years of life
Objective
Among older children with sickle cell anemia, leukocyte counts, hemoglobin, and reticulocytosis have previously been suggested as disease severity markers. Here we explored whether these blood parameters may be useful to predict early childhood disease severity when tested in early infancy, defined as postnatal ages 60â180 days. Study Design
Data from fifty-nine subjects who were followed at Childrenâs National Medical Centerâs Sickle Cell Program for at least three years was retrospectively analyzed. Comparisons were made between white blood cell counts, hemoglobin and reticulocyte levels measured at ages 60â180 days and the clinical course of sickle cell anemia during infancy and childhood. Results
A majority of subjects had demonstrable anemia with increased reticulocytosis. Only increased absolute reticulocyte levels during early infancy were associated with a significant increase in hospitalization during the first three years of life. Higher absolute reticulocyte counts were also associated with a markedly shorter time to first hospitalizations and a four-fold higher cumulative frequency of clinical manifestations over the first three years of life. No significant increase in white blood cell counts was identified among the infant subjects. Conclusions
These data suggest that during early infancy, increased reticulocytosis among asymptomatic SCA subjects is associated with increased severity of disease in childhood

Optical and ultraviolet spectroscopic analysis of SN 2011fe at late times
We present optical spectra of the nearby Type Ia supernova SN 2011fe at 100,
205, 311, 349, and 578 days post-maximum light, as well as an ultraviolet
spectrum obtained with Hubble Space Telescope at 360 days post-maximum light.
We compare these observations with synthetic spectra produced with the
radiative transfer code PHOENIX. The day +100 spectrum can be well fit with
models which neglect collisional and radiative data for forbidden lines.
Curiously, including this data and recomputing the fit yields a quite similar
spectrum, but with different combinations of lines forming some of the stronger
features. At day +205 and later epochs, forbidden lines dominate much of the
optical spectrum formation; however, our results indicate that recombination,
not collisional excitation, is the most influential physical process driving
spectrum formation at these late times. Consequently, our synthetic optical and
UV spectra at all epochs presented here are formed almost exclusively through
recombination-driven fluorescence. Furthermore, our models suggest that the
ultraviolet spectrum even as late as day +360 is optically thick and consists
of permitted lines from several iron-peak species. These results indicate that
the transition to the "nebular" phase in Type Ia supernovae is complex and

Yearling bulls have reduced sperm concentration and increased seminal plasma interleukin-8 after a 28-day breeding season
We hypothesized that yearling bulls selected for a 28-d breeding season would have reduced sperm concentrations and morphology, and have increased seminal plasma concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8). Yearling bulls were selected based on a breeding soundness examination (BSE) at approximately 415 d of age and contained at least 750 million sperm in the ejaculate, with 12 bulls randomly selected for breeding (BREEDERS) and 12 bulls not selected for breeding (NON-BREEDERS). After a 28-d breeding period, all bulls underwent a BSE. Plasma and seminal plasma were collected at each time point for analysis. Data were analysed utilizing either the MIXED or GLIMMIX procedures with repeated measures in SAS with breeding group, age and the interaction as fixed effects. Sperm concentration per ml of ejaculate was reduced (p \u3c .05) in yearling bulls used for breeding compared with those not used for breeding at the end of the breeding season. Seminal plasma IL-8 concentrations in yearling bulls used for breeding were increased (p \u3c .05) after the breeding season compared with bulls not used for breeding. Taken together, yearling bulls selected for a 28-d breeding season have reduced sperm production per ml of an ejaculate and increased inflammatory response in the seminal plasma that can lead to impaired breeding response if they are to be used for more than 30 d of breeding
Oxford SWIFT IFS and multi-wavelength observations of the Eagle galaxy at z=0.77
The `Eagle' galaxy at a redshift of 0.77 is studied with the Oxford Short
Wavelength Integral Field Spectrograph (SWIFT) and multi-wavelength data from
the All-wavelength Extended Groth strip International Survey (AEGIS). It was
chosen from AEGIS because of the bright and extended emission in its slit
spectrum. Three dimensional kinematic maps of the Eagle reveal a gradient in
velocity dispersion which spans 35-75 +/- 10 km/s and a rotation velocity of 25
+/- 5 km/s uncorrected for inclination. Hubble Space Telescope images suggest
it is close to face-on. In comparison with galaxies from AEGIS at similar
redshifts, the Eagle is extremely bright and blue in the rest-frame optical,
highly star-forming, dominated by unobscured star-formation, and has a low
metallicity for its size. This is consistent with its selection. The Eagle is
likely undergoing a major merger and is caught in the early stage of a
star-burst when it has not yet experienced metal enrichment or formed the mass
of dust typically found in star-forming galaxies.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRA
