    Producing Mega-pixel CMB Maps from Differential Radiometer Data

    A major goal of cosmology is to obtain sensitive, high resolution maps of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropy. Such maps, as would be produced by the recently proposed Microwave Anisotropy Probe (MAP), will contain a wealth of primary information about conditions in the early universe. To mitigate systematic effects when observing the microwave background, it is desirable for the raw data to be collected in differential form: as a set of temperature differences between points in the sky. However, the production of large (mega-pixel) maps from a set of temperature differences is a potentially severe computational challenge. We present a new technique for producing maps from differential radiometer data that has a computational cost that grows in the slowest possible way with increasing angular resolution and number of map pixels. The required central processor (CPU) time is proportional to the number of differential data points and the required random access memory (RAM) is proportional to the number of map pixels. We test our technique, and demonstrate its feasibility, by simulating one year of a space-borne anisotropy mission.Comment: 8 pages Latex with 3 Postscript figures embedded using eps

    Wistar Kyoto Rats display anhedonia in consumption but retain some sensitivity to the anticipation of palatable solutions

    The Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rat has been proposed as a model of depression-like symptoms. However, anhedonia—a reduction in the response to normatively rewarding events—as a central depression symptom has yet to be fully assessed in this model. We compared WKY rats and Wistar controls, with stress-susceptibility examined by applying mild unpredictable stress to a subset of each group. Anhedonia-like behavior was assessed using microstructural analysis of licking behavior, where mean lick cluster size reflects hedonic responses. This was combined with tests of anticipatory contrast, where the consumption of a moderately palatable solution (4% sucrose) is suppressed in anticipation of a more palatable solution (32% sucrose). WKY rats displayed greatly attenuated hedonic reactions to sucrose overall, although their reactions retained some sensitivity to differences in sucrose concentration. They displayed normal reductions in consumption in anticipatory contrast, although the effect of contrast on hedonic reactions was greatly blunted. Mild stress produced overall reductions in sucrose consumption, but this was not exacerbated in WKY rats. Moreover, mild stress did not affect hedonic reactions or the effects of contrast. These results confirm that the WKY substrain expresses a direct behavioral analog of anhedonia, which may have utility for increasing mechanistic understanding of depression symptoms

    Transformation from Developmental Mathematics Student to Mathematics Teacher: Narratives of Adult Learning Experiences

    The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of developmental mathematics students who, after successful completion of their developmental courses, chose a career in teaching and to gain a better understanding of how those experiences helped shape their decision to go forward with a career in mathematics education. With the intention of exploring the text and the context of the experiences of former developmental mathematics students as they have reflected on them and storied them so as to make meaning of them, I determined that a qualitative methodology was indicated; and the qualitative method selected was narrative analysis. Altogether 13 respondents met the criteria and were interviewed. Interviews conducted during the spring and early summer of 2008 were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for data relevant to the goals of this study. Analysis revealed that developmental mathematics students not only have the capacity to become competent students but they have the potential of becoming outstanding teachers and scholars. This potential is closely tied to affective qualities, such as self-efficacy, which are often profoundly impacted and enhanced by a teacher or mentor. The developmental student who has chosen a career in education frequently views the teacher/mentor as (i) a role model who he/she desires to emulate thereby extending that profound impact, and/or as (ii) a hero for whom future endeavors are viewed as a form of payback. The narratives also revealed that women developmental students typically had greater struggles and difficulties in meeting their educational goals because they bore the responsibility for caring for children and, in most cases, for their family?s financial support. Areas of study that warrant further investigation were uncovered while doing this research and include (i) an identification of teaching methodologies that both enhance mathematics capability and also bring a greater self-awareness of the increased capability, (ii) a determination of the impact of faculty/institutional behaviors and attitudes on adult developmental mathematics students who dropped out of their programs and did not complete their college education, (iii) the characteristics of the educational experiences of single mothers who passed through developmental mathematics and on to the teaching profession, and (iv) a deeper understanding of the teacher recruitment potential of cooperative learning groups, tutoring centers, and supplemental instruction

    The National Military Strategy (2004), the Capstone Concept for Joint Operations (2005), and the Quadrennial Defense Review (2006) specifically highlight a new focus by the Department of Defense (DoD) on knowledge in operations as opposed to traditional weapons platforms. As such, each of the military services have put into place KM programs to varying degrees. According to Stankosky’s (2005) four pillars of KM framework, managing an organization’s knowledge assets can be most effectively accomplished by addressing four key elements--leadership, organization, technology, and learning—the “learning” pillar including KM education. Given that research on KM education is sparse (Ruth et al, 2000) and that organizations that do not address KM education are more likely to fail with KM efforts (Koenig, 2004), this multiple-case study provides a first look at KM education across the DoD. The preliminary results indicate that nature and importance of programs vary across the services, and, despite some leadership support, the resources needed to execute them are not always available

    Lessons Learned from the First Year Implementation of a Two-Track, Reformed Introductory Biology Course

    The design, implementation and assessment of a novel, two-track, reformed introductory biology sequence are described in this paper. Course reform was based on the recommendations by the 2009 Vision & Change report from AAAS. Both tracks were based on guided inquiry, with an emphasis on constructivist pedagogy. One track included only students entering college with Advanced Placement Biology credit (N=24), who were given a studio style course that focused on the investigation of the phenomenon of “vanishing amphibians,” from molecules to ecosystems, over the entire year. The other track included the remaining students (N=68), who received more direct content instruction but through the use of numerous student-centered, active learning methods. The “AP Scholars” section entered with higher and more consistent levels of prior knowledge, but both sections made identical normalized learning gains and expressed satisfaction with the course, particularly the reformed aspects. The “AP Scholars” identified strongly as scientists and enjoyed the investigative nature of the course. The two-track course is now in its second year, and changes are being made in accordance with the lessons learned from the first year. This two-track system could serve as a model for other institutions looking to change their introductory biology sequence

In many cases, the insects do not cause enough damage to justify control procedures. However, under some conditions seed pests may be very destructive. Seed that is slow to germinate and establish is more likely to be damaged. Situations such as first-year crops following sod or pasture, ecofallow, or reduced tillage/heavy crop residue conditions have a good chance for seed/seedling damage.     Vanishing point detection for visual surveillance systems in railway platform environments

Visual surveillance is of paramount importance in public spaces and especially in train and metro platforms which are particularly susceptible to many types of crime from petty theft to terrorist activity. Image resolution of visual surveillance systems is limited by a trade-off between several requirements such as sensor and lens cost, transmission bandwidth and storage space. When image quality cannot be improved using high-resolution sensors, high-end lenses or IR illumination, the visual surveillance system may need to increase the resolving power of the images by software to provide accurate outputs such as, in our case, vanishing points (VPs). Despite having numerous applications in camera calibration, 3D reconstruction and threat detection, a general method for VP detection has remained elusive. Rather than attempting the infeasible task of VP detection in general scenes, this paper presents a novel method that is fine-tuned to work for railway station environments and is shown to outperform the state-of-the-art for that particular case. In this paper, we propose a three-stage approach to accurately detect the main lines and vanishing points in low-resolution images acquired by visual surveillance systems in indoor and outdoor railway platform environments. First, several frames are used to increase the resolving power through a multi-frame image enhancer. Second, an adaptive edge detection is performed and a novel line clustering algorithm is then applied to determine the parameters of the lines that converge at VPs; this is based on statistics of the detected lines and heuristics about the type of scene. Finally, vanishing points are computed via a voting system to optimize detection in an attempt to omit spurious lines. The proposed approach is very robust since it is not affected by ever-changing illumination and weather conditions of the scene, and it is immune to vibrations. Accurate and reliable vanishing point detection provides very valuable information, which can be used to aid camera calibration, automatic scene understanding, scene segmentation, semantic classification or augmented reality in platform environments

    Microstructural analysis of negative anticipatory contrast: A reconsideration of the devaluation account

    An animal’s appetitive behavior is not a fixed response to current stimulation but can be affected by the anticipation of future events. For example, rats regularly given access to a moderately valued solution followed by a higher value solution (e.g. 4% sucrose → 32% sucrose) consume less of the initial solution than in control conditions where the initial solution is not followed by a higher value solution (e.g. 4% sucrose → 4% sucrose). Previous analyses have suggested that this negative anticipatory contrast effect does not depend on the “expectation” of a valuable stimulus producing a functional devaluation of a currently available stimulus of lesser value. In a within-subject anticipatory contrast procedure, this study revealed that both consumption and the mean size of licking clusters were smaller for a 4% sucrose solution on days when it preceded 32% sucrose than on days when 4% preceded 4%. As lick cluster size typically bears a positive monotonic relationship with the concentration of palatable solutions, this reduction is indicative of a decrease in the palatability/hedonic value of the solution subject to contrast. As such, we provide direct evidence that negative anticipatory contrast does produce a functional devaluation of the solution, thus challenging prevailing theoretical assumptions
