Parametric Local Metric Learning for Nearest Neighbor Classification

We study the problem of learning local metrics for nearest neighbor classification. Most previous works on local metric learning learn a number of local unrelated metrics. While this "independence" approach delivers an increased flexibility its downside is the considerable risk of overfitting. We present a new parametric local metric learning method in which we learn a smooth metric matrix function over the data manifold. Using an approximation error bound of the metric matrix function we learn local metrics as linear combinations of basis metrics defined on anchor points over different regions of the instance space. We constrain the metric matrix function by imposing on the linear combinations manifold regularization which makes the learned metric matrix function vary smoothly along the geodesics of the data manifold. Our metric learning method has excellent performance both in terms of predictive power and scalability. We experimented with several large-scale classification problems, tens of thousands of instances, and compared it with several state of the art metric learning methods, both global and local, as well as to SVM with automatic kernel selection, all of which it outperforms in a significant manner

HIV Risk Factors Among Moroccan and Turkish Same-Sex Attracted Youth in Amsterdam

This report is the outcome of a month-long exploratory study on the main HIV risk factors among Moroccan and Turkish same-sex attracted (SSA) youth in Amsterdam. Data was obtained by way of interviews conducted with five experts, categorized as: academics, sexual and ethnic minority activists, and HIV professionals. Five main risk factors were determined: cultural differences; language barriers; stigma and taboo around sexuality and HIV within Islamic communities; socioeconomic marginalization; and lack of a positive term for same-sex sexual behavior and identity among the target group. Recommendations for future research include interviews with Moroccan and Turkish SSA youth themselves. Implications for future interventions are discussed

Hearts and Trees

The process of creating art is a visceral experience for me. Each piece is born from an inherent need to visually express and understand my experiences and emotions. I use a variety of materials to create mixed media sculptures, books, and two-dimensional images. Maps and trees are the common motifs and metaphors found in my work. I paint on the surface of maps to reference significant locations in my journey of personal growth. I incorporate found sticks and branches in my sculptures and paint images of trees to communicate my reverence for nature. I often use the tree as a symbol for myself. I create images and detail with careful control of my media. I use pliers to manipulate wire into precisely formed curls around stones and wood. I apply short, repeated strokes with pen or paint on paper, or with a ceramic tool on a clay surface. I use this repetition of marks to create visual rhythm and a sense of movement which gives energy to otherwise simple images. I use a limited color palette to help maintain visual clarity of the image

Данная статья посвящена проблеме предотвращения аварий на предприятиях горнодобывающей промышленности за счёт влияния. Рассматриваются причины повышения содержания газа в горных выработках. Дана сравнительная характеристика угольной пыли и метана по их опасности. Выявлено, что угольная пыль опаснее метана. Приведены меры по профилактике аварийности на горнодобывающих предприятиях. This article is devoted to the prevention of accidents in the mining industry at the expense of influence. It discusses reasons for the increase in gas content in mine workings. The author describes comparative characteristics of coal dust and methane at their danger. It is revealed that the coal dust is more dangerous than methane. The author gives measures for the prevention of accidents at mining enterprises

Interpretable Meta-Measure for Model Performance

Measures for evaluation of model performance play an important role in Machine Learning. However, the most common performance measures share several limitations. The difference in performance for two models has no probabilistic interpretation and there is no reference point to indicate whether they represent a significant improvement. What is more, it makes no sense to compare such differences between data sets. In this article, we introduce a new meta-measure for performance assessment named Elo-based Predictive Power (EPP). The differences in EPP scores have probabilistic interpretation and can be directly compared between data sets. We prove the mathematical properties of EPP and support them with empirical results of a~large scale benchmark on 30 classification data sets. Finally, we show applications of EPP to the selected meta-learning problems and challenges beyond ML benchmarks.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1908.0921
