    The Role of Heme Chirality in the Circular Dichroism of Heme Proteins

    The rotational strength (R) of the Soret transition in sperm-whale myoglobin (SW Mb), the hemoglobin from Chirononms thummi thummi (C17 Hb), and human hemoglobin (hHb) has been calculated using 20 high-resolution ( R-aro > R-pep. For CTT Hb and hHB, the orders were, respectively, R-int > R-pep > R-aro and R-int > R-aro approximate to R-pep. Human Hb alpha chains showed the same trend as CTT Hb. Only in the hHb beta chains did R-aro predominate, with the order R-aro > R-iot > R-pep. The total predicted R-tot for SW Mb, CTT Hb, and hHb averaged +0.77 +/- 0.10 (0.56-0.80), -0.37 +/- 0.12 (-0.5), and +0.31 +/- 0.17 DBM (0.23-0.50), respectively. (Values in parentheses are experimental values.) Thus, contrary to the currently accepted view, coupling with aromatic side-chain or peptide transitions is not the dominant factor in the Soret circular dichroism (CD) of these proteins. The Soret CD is dominated by intrinsic CD of the heme chromophore, of which vinyl torsion is the major determinant. This result suggests an explanation for the large effect of heme isomerism on the Soret CD of Mb and Hb. Rotation about the alpha-gamma axis may be associated with large changes in vinyl torsion and thus substantially alter the intrinsic CD, even reversing its sign

    The Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) requires a flexible correlator to process the data from up to 23 telescopes and up to 8GHz of receiver bandwidth. The Caltech Owens Valley Broadband Reconfigurable Array (COBRA) correlator, developed for use at the Owens Valley millimeter-wave array and being used by the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Array (SZA), will be adapted for use by CARMA. The COBRA correlator system, a hybrid analog-digital design, consisting of downconverters, digitizers and correlators will be presented in this paper. The downconverters receive an input IF of 1-9GHz and produce a selectable output bandwidth of 62.5MHz, 125MHz, 250MHz, or 500MHz. The downconverter output is digitized at 1Gsample/s to 2-bits per sample. The digitized data is optionally digitally filtered to produce bands narrower than 62.5MHz (down to 2MHz). The digital correlator system is a lag- or XF-based system implemented using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). The digital system implements delay lines, calculates the autocorrelations for each antenna, and the cross-correlations for each baseline. The number of lags, and hence spectral channels, produced by the system is a function of the input bandwidth; with the 500MHz band having the coarsest resolution, and the narrowest bandwidths having the finest resolution

    A simultaneous search for prompt radio emission associated with the short GRB 170112A using the all-sky imaging capability of the OVRO-LWA

    We have conducted the most sensitive low frequency (below 100 MHz) search to date for prompt, low-frequency radio emission associated with short-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), using the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Long Wavelength Array (OVRO-LWA). The OVRO-LWA's nearly full-hemisphere field-of-view (∼20\sim20,000000 square degrees) allows us to search for low-frequency (sub-100100 MHz) counterparts for a large sample of the subset of GRB events for which prompt radio emission has been predicted. Following the detection of short GRB 170112A by Swift, we used all-sky OVRO-LWA images spanning one hour prior to and two hours following the GRB event to search for a transient source coincident with the position of GRB 170112A. We detect no transient source, with our most constraining 1σ1\sigma flux density limit of 650 mJy650~\text{mJy} for frequencies spanning 27 MHz−84 MHz27~\text{MHz}-84~\text{MHz}. We place constraints on a number of models predicting prompt, low-frequency radio emission accompanying short GRBs and their potential binary neutron star merger progenitors, and place an upper limit of Lradio/Lγ≲7×10−16L_\text{radio}/L_\gamma \lesssim 7\times10^{-16} on the fraction of energy released in the prompt radio emission. These observations serve as a pilot effort for a program targeting a wider sample of both short and long GRBs with the OVRO-LWA, including bursts with confirmed redshift measurements which are critical to placing the most constraining limits on prompt radio emission models, as well as a program for the follow-up of gravitational wave compact binary coalescence events detected by advanced LIGO and Virgo.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, ApJ submitte

    The Interaction between Personality, Social Network Position and Involvement in Innovation Process

    Abstract This dissertation proposal investigates how personality and individuals’ social network position affect individuals’ involvement into the innovation process. It posits that people would feel inclined to become involved into the different phases of the innovation process depending on their Big Five personality traits. Additionally, this research elaborates on personality antecedents of social relationships and network structure. Furthermore, it accounts for the dynamic relationship between stages in innovation process and social network structure. Finally, it posits that there is potentially a mismatch between social network structure in different stages of the innovation process, and that this mismatch is caused by individuals’ personality. The suggested conceptual framework contributes to the innovation literature by enriching our understanding of why people create markedly different patterns of social ties in the workplace and how this tie formation process and personality influence innovation process. An empirical study aimed at testing the suggested propositions is suggested

    Tracing the Bipolar Outflow from Orion Source I

    Using CARMA, we imaged the 87 GHz SiO v=0 J=2-1 line toward Orion-KL with 0.45 arcsec angular resolution. The maps indicate that radio source I drives a bipolar outflow into the surrounding molecular cloud along a NE--SW axis, in agreement with the model of Greenhill et al. (2004). The extended high velocity outflow from Orion-KL appears to be a continuation of this compact outflow. High velocity gas extends farthest along a NW--SE axis, suggesting that the outflow direction changes on time scales of a few hundred years.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Ap J Letter

    Construction and Expected Performance of the Hadron Blind Detector for the PHENIX Experiment at RHIC

    A new Hadron Blind Detector (HBD) for electron identification in high density hadron environment has been installed in the PHENIX detector at RHIC in the fall of 2006. The HBD will identify low momentum electron-positron pairs to reduce the combinatorial background in the e+e−e^{+}e^{-} mass spectrum, mainly in the low-mass region below 1 GeV/c2^{2}. The HBD is a windowless proximity-focusing Cherenkov detector with a radiator length of 50 cm, a CsI photocathode and three layers of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM). The HBD uses pure CF4_{4} as a radiator and a detector gas. Construction details and the expected performance of the detector are described.Comment: QM2006 proceedings, 4 pages 3 figure
