Long secondary periods in variable red giants

DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.15401.xWe present a study of a sample of Large Magellanic Cloud red giants exhibiting Long Secondary Periods (LSPs). We use radial velocities obtained from VLT spectral observations and MACHO and OGLE light curves to examine properties of the stars and to evaluate models for the cause of LSPs. This sample is much larger than the combined previous studies of Hinkle et al. and Wood, Olivier & Kawaler. Binary and pulsation models have enjoyed much support in recent years. Assuming stellar pulsation, we calculate from the velocity curves that the typical fractional radius change over an LSP cycle is greater than 30 per cent. This should lead to large changes in Teff that are not observed. Also, the small light amplitude of these stars seems inconsistent with the radius amplitude. We conclude that pulsation is not a likely explanation for the LSPs. The main alternative, physical movement of the star – binary motion – also has severe problems. If the velocity variations are due to binary motion, the distribution of the angle of periastron in our large sample of stars has a probability of 1.4 × 10−3 that it comes from randomly aligned binary orbits. In addition, we calculate a typical companion mass of 0.09 M⊙ . Less than 1 per cent of low-mass main-sequence stars have companions near this mass (0.06–0.12 M⊙) whereas ∼25–50 per cent of low-mass red giants end up with LSPs. We are unable to find a suitable model for the LSPs and conclude by listing their known properties.Peer reviewe
Viral antibody dynamics in a chiropteran host
1. Bats host many viruses that are significant for human and domestic animal health, but the dynamics of these infections in their natural reservoir hosts remain poorly elucidated.<p></p>
2. In these, and other, systems, there is evidence that seasonal life-cycle events drive infection dynamics, directly impacting the risk of exposure to spillover hosts. Understanding these dynamics improves our ability to predict zoonotic spillover from the reservoir hosts.<p></p>
3. To this end, we followed henipavirus antibody levels of >100 individual E. helvum in a closed, captive, breeding population over a 30-month period, using a powerful novel antibody quantitation method.<p></p>
4. We demonstrate the presence of maternal antibodies in this system and accurately determine their longevity. We also present evidence of population-level persistence of viral infection and demonstrate periods of increased horizontal virus transmission associated with the pregnancy/lactation period.<p></p>
5.The novel findings of infection persistence and the effect of pregnancy on viral transmission, as well as an accurate quantitation of chiropteran maternal antiviral antibody half-life, provide fundamental baseline data for the continued study of viral infections in these important reservoir hosts

Metal-rich carbon stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy

DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2009.14736.xWe present spectroscopic observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope of six carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) and two foreground Galactic carbon stars. The band strengths of the observed C2H2 and SiC features are very similar to those observed in Galactic AGB stars. The metallicities are estimated from an empirical relation between the acetylene optical depth and the strength of the SiC feature. The metallicities are higher than those of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and close to Galactic values. While the high metallicity could imply an age of around 1 Gyr, for the dusty AGB stars, the pulsation periods suggest ages in excess of 2 or 3 Gyr. We fit the spectra of the observed stars using the dusty radiative transfer model and determine their dust mass-loss rates to be in the range 1.0–3.3 × 10−8 M⊙ yr−1 . The two Galactic foreground carbon-rich AGB stars are located at the far side of the solar circle, beyond the Galactic Centre. One of these two stars shows the strongest SiC feature in our present Local Group sample.Peer reviewe
The wind speeds, dust content, and mass-loss rates of evolved AGB and RSG stars at varying metallicity
We present the results of our survey of 1612 MHz circumstellar OH maser emission
from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in the Large
Magellanic Cloud. We have discovered four new circumstellar maser sources in the
LMC, and increased the number of reliable wind speeds from IR stars in the LMC
from 5 to 13. Using our new wind speeds, as well as those from Galactic sources,
we have derived an updated relation for dust driven winds: vexp / ZL0:4. We compare
the sub-solar metallicity LMC OH/IR stars with carefully selected samples of
more metal-rich OH/IR stars, also at known distances, in the Galactic Centre and
Galactic Bulge. For 8 of the Bulge stars we derive pulsation periods for the first
time, using near-IR photometry from the VVV survey. We have modeled our LMC
OH/IR stars and developed an empirical method of deriving gas-to-dust ratios and
mass loss rates by scaling the models to the results from maser profiles. We have
done this also for samples in the Galactic Centre and Bulge and derived a new
mass loss prescription that includes luminosity, pulsation period, and gas-to-dust ratio

Asymptotic Giant Branch Variables in the Galaxy and the Local Group
AGB variables, particularly the large amplitude Mira type, are a vital step
on the distance scale ladder. They will prove particularly important in the era
of space telescopes and extremely large ground-based telescopes with adaptive
optics, which will be optimized for infrared observing. Our current
understanding of the distances to these stars is reviewed with particular
emphasis on improvements that came from Hipparcos as well as on recent work on
Local Group galaxies. In addition to providing the essential calibration for
extragalactic distances Gaia may also provide unprecedented insight into the

Implications of the HERA Events for the R-Parity Breaking SUSY Signals at Tevatron
The favoured R-parity violating SUSY scenarios for the anomalous HERA events
correspond to top and charm squark production via the and
couplings. In both cases the corresponding electronic
branching fractions of the squarks are expected to be . Consequently the
canonical leptoquark signature is incapable of probing these scenarios at the
Tevatron collider over most of the MSSM parameter space. We suggest alternative
signatures for probing them at Tevatron, which seem to be viable over the

Review of Suspended Sediment Transport Mathematical Modelling Studies
YesThis paper reviews existing studies relating to the assessment of sediment concentration profiles within various flow conditions due to their importance in representing pollutant propagation. The effects of sediment particle size, flow depth, and velocity were considered, as well as the eddy viscosity and Rouse number influence on the drag of the particle. It is also widely considered that there is a minimum threshold velocity required to increase sediment concentration within a flow above the washload. The bursting effect has also been investigated within this review, in which it presents the mechanism for sediment to be entrained within the flow at low average velocities. A review of the existing state-of-the-art literature has shown there are many variables to consider, i.e., particle density, flow velocity, and turbulence, when assessing the suspended sediment characteristics within flow; this outcome further evidences the complexity of suspended sediment transport modelling
Scintillation Counters for the D0 Muon Upgrade
We present the results of an upgrade to the D0 muon system. Scintillating
counters have been added to the existing central D0 muon system to provide
rejection for cosmic ray muons and out-of-time background, and to provide
additional fast timing information for muons in an upgraded Tevatron.
