    Low-temperature conductance oscillations in junctionless nanowire transistors

    Junctionless nanowire transistors show more marked oscillations conductance oscillations than inversion-mode devices. These oscillations can be observed at higher temperature, drain voltage, and gate voltage than in surface-channel, inversion-mode multigate metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect devices.     Deep Chandra Monitoring Observations of NGC 4649: II. Wide-Field Hubble Space Telescope Imaging of the Globular Clusters

    We present g and z photometry and size estimates for globular clusters (GCs) in the massive Virgo elliptical NGC 4649 (M60) using a five-pointing Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys mosaic. The metal-poor GCs show a monotonic negative metallicity gradient of (-0.43 +/- 0.10) dex per dex in radius over the full radial range of the data, out to ~ 24 kpc. There is evidence for substantial color substructure among the metal-rich GCs. The metal-poor GCs have typical sizes ~ 0.4 pc larger than the metal-rich GCs out to large galactocentric distances (~> 20 kpc), favoring an intrinsic explanation for the size difference rather than projection effects. There is no clear relation between half-light radius and galactocentric distance beyond ~ 15 kpc, suggesting that the sizes of GCs are not generically set by tidal limitation. Finally, we identify ~ 20 candidate ultra-compact dwarfs that extend down to surprisingly faint absolute magnitudes (M_z ~ -8.5), and may bridge the gap between this class and "extended clusters" in the Local Group. Three of the brighter candidates have published radial velocities and can be confirmed as bona fide ultra-compact dwarfs; follow-up spectroscopy will determine the nature of the remainder of the candidates.Comment: ApJ in press.     Low-frequency noise in junctionless multigate transistors

    Low-frequency noise in n-type junctionless multigate transistors was investigated. It can be well understood with the carrier number fluctuations whereas the conduction is mainly limited by the bulk expecting Hooge mobility fluctuations. The trapping/release of charge carriers is related not only to the oxide-semiconductor interface but also to the depleted channel. The volume trap density is in the range of 6-30 x 10(16) cm(-3) eV(-1), which is similar to Si-SiO2 bulk transistors and remarkably lower than in high-k transistors.     Visfatin Induces Sickness Responses in the Brain

    BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Visfatin, also known as nicotiamide phosphoribosyltransferase or pre-B cell colony enhancing factor, is a pro-inflammatory cytokine whose serum level is increased in sepsis and cancer as well as in obesity. Here we report a pro-inflammatory role of visfatin in the brain, to mediate sickness responses including anorexia, hyperthermia and hypoactivity. METHODOLOGY: Rats were intracerebroventricularly (ICV) injected with visfatin, and changes in food intake, body weight, body temperature and locomotor activity were monitored. Real-time PCR was applied to determine the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines, proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and prostaglandin-synthesizing enzymes in their brain. To determine the roles of cyclooxygenase (COX) and melanocortin in the visfatin action, rats were ICV-injected with visfatin with or without SHU9119, a melanocortin receptor antagonist, or indomethacin, a COX inhibitor, and their sickness behaviors were evaluated. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Administration of visfatin decreased food intake, body weight and locomotor activity and increased body temperature. Visfatin evoked significant increases in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, prostaglandin-synthesizing enzymes and POMC, an anorexigenic neuropeptide. Indomethacin attenuated the effects of visfatin on hyperthermia and hypoactivity, but not anorexia. Further, SHU9119 blocked visfatin-induced anorexia but did not affect hyperthermia or hypoactivity. CONCLUSIONS: Visfatin induced sickness responses via regulation of COX and the melanocortin pathway in the brain

    Impact of cigarette smoking on the relationship between body mass index and coronary heart disease: a pooled analysis of 3264 stroke and 2706 CHD events in 378579 individuals in the Asia Pacific region

    BACKGROUND: Elevated levels of body mass index (BMI) and smoking are well established lifestyle risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke. If these two risk factors have a synergistic relationship, rigorous lifestyle modification may contribute to greater reduction in cardiovascular burden than previously expected. METHODS: A pooled analysis of individual participant data from 38 cohorts, involving 378,579 participants. Hazards ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for BMI by cigarette smoking status were estimated using Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 3.8 years, 2706 CHD and 3264 strokes were recorded. There was a log-linear, positive relationship of BMI with CHD and stroke in both smokers and non-smokers with evidence of a synergistic effect of smoking on the association between BMI and CHD only: HRs (95% CIs) associated with a 2 kg/m2 higher BMI were 1.13 (1.10-1.17) in current smokers and 1.09 (1.06-1.11) in non-smokers (p-value for interaction=0.04). CONCLUSION: Smoking amplifies the positive association between BMI and CHD but not stroke. If confirmed, these results suggest that effective strategies that target smoking cessation and weight loss are likely to have a greater impact than anticipated on reducing the burden of CHD.published_or_final_versio

    AKAP12 regulates human blood-retinal barrier formation by downregulation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha

    Many diseases of the eye such as retinoblastoma, diabetic retinopathy, and retinopathy of prematurity are associated with blood-retinal barrier (BRB) dysfunction. Identifying the factors that contribute to BRB formation during human eye development and maintenance could provide insights into such diseases. Here we show that A-kinase anchor protein 12 (AKAP12) induces BRB formation by increasing angiopoietin-1 and decreasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in astrocytes. We reveal that AKAP12 downregulates the level of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) protein by enhancing the interaction of HIF-1alpha with pVHL (von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor protein) and PHD2 (prolyl hydroxylase 2). Conditioned media from AKAP12-overexpressing astrocytes induced barriergenesis by upregulating the expression of tight junction proteins in human retina microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs). Compared with the retina during BRB maturation, AKAP12 expression in retinoblastoma patient tissue was markedly reduced whereas that of VEGF was increased. These findings suggest that AKAP12 may induce BRB formation through antiangiogenesis and barriergenesis in the developing human eye and that defects in this mechanism can lead to a loss of tight junction proteins and contribute to the development of retinal pathologies such as retinoblastoma

    Expression of Aquaporin 5 (AQP5) Promotes Tumor Invasion in Human Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

    The aquaporins (AQP) are water channel proteins playing a major role in transcellular and transepithelial water movement. Recently, the role of AQPs in human carcinogenesis has become an area of great interest. Here, by immunohistochemistry (IHC), we have found an expression of AQP5 protein in 35.3% (IHC-score: β‰₯1, 144/408) of the resected NSCLC tissue samples. Cases with AQP5-positive status (IHC-score: β‰₯2) displayed a higher rate of tumor recurrence than negative ones in NSCLC (54.7% vs. 35.1%, pβ€Š=β€Š0.005) and worse disease-free survival (pβ€Š=β€Š0.033; ORβ€Š=β€Š1.52; 95%CI:1.04βˆ’2.23). Further in vitro invasion assay using BEAS-2B and NIH3T3 cells stably transfected with overexpression constructs for full length wild-type AQP5 (AQP5) and its two mutants, N185D which blocks membrane trafficking and S156A which blocks phosphorylation on Ser156, showed that AQP5 induced cell invasions while both mutants did not. In BEAS-2B cells, the expression of AQP5 caused a spindle-like and fibroblastic morphologic change and losses of cell-cell contacts and cell polarity. Only cells with AQP5, not either of two mutants, exhibited a loss of epithelial cell markers and a gain of mesenchymal cell markers. In a human SH3-domains protein array, cellular extracts from BEAS-2B with AQP5 showed a robust binding activity to SH3-domains of the c-Src, Lyn, and Grap2 C-terminal. Furthermore, in immunoprecipitation assay, activated c-Src, phosphorylated on Tyr416, showed a stronger binding activity to cellular extracts from BEAS-2B with AQP5 compared with N185D or S156A mutant. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis failed to show evidence of genomic amplification, suggesting AQP5 expression as a secondary event. Based on these clinical and molecular observations, we conclude that AQP5, through its phosphorylation on Ser156 and subsequent interaction with c-Src, plays an important role in NSCLC invasion and, therefore, may provide a unique opportunity for developing a novel therapeutic target as well as a prognostic marker in NSCLC

    Reduction of the Lamina Cribrosa Curvature After Trabeculectomy in Glaucoma

    PURPOSE. To investigate whether the lamina cribrosa (LC) curvature is decreased after trabeculectomy. METHODS. Thirty-nine eyes of 39 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent trabeculectomy were included. Optic nerves were scanned by using enhanced-depth-imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography before and after trabeculectomy. The LC curvature was assessed by measuring the LC curvature index (LCCI) in seven horizontal Bscan images in each eye. RESULTS. The LCCI was significantly smaller at postoperative 6 months than at the preoperative level in all seven planes (all P < 0.001). Preoperative LCCI was associated with younger age at superior midperiphery, midhorizontal plane, inferior midperiphery (all P 0.005) and higher preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) at superior and inferior midperiphery (both P ΒΌ 0.039). Younger age and larger preoperative LCCI were associated with a larger reduction of the LCCI at all three locations (P ΒΌ 0.003 and 0.031 at superior midperiphery, P ΒΌ 0.011 and 0.001 at midhorizontal plane, and P ΒΌ 0.014 and 0.005 at inferior midperiphery, respectively), whereas the percentage IOP lowering was associated at superior and inferior midperiphery (P ΒΌ 0.017 and 0.047, respectively). CONCLUSIONS. Lamina cribrosa curvature was reduced after trabeculectomy. This finding suggests that LC curvature may have value as a parameter relevant to optic nerve head biomechanics
